Every gathering. Every single one. And he arrives early and he helps carry the chairs.
That is the part that has nearly finished this man, and it is the part nobody outside a family understands. If his cousin had gone off somewhere and never been seen again, this would be a wound and it would heal at whatever speed wounds heal. Instead he comes to everything, he is genuinely pleasant, he asks after the children by name, and he has never once, in nine years, said a single word about what he did.
Their fathers built it. Two brothers, a shed, a truck, thirty-one years. It was not a fortune and it was not nothing, and it was supposed to come down to two families, and through a sequence of entirely legal steps taken over about fourteen months while one of those fathers was dying, it came down to one.
Legal. Everybody agrees it was legal. That word has been used to him more times than he can count and he has come to hate it.
Nine years. And every time somebody in that family says the thing, and they do say it, usually kindly, usually at the end of a long evening: you have to forgive him. Let it go. He is your cousin.
And everything in him refuses. Not with a shrug and not with a maybe later. It is a whole body no, and he feels it in his jaw across a courtyard when the man walks in.
You know that no. It may not be a business. But there is somebody you are supposed to release and everything in you refuses, and the refusal is not stubbornness, and it is not weak faith, and nobody has ever asked you what it is actually protecting.
Sit down at this end of the table. That is where we are going to start.
What the refusal is protecting
Let me tell you what your body is defending, because once it is named you can stop fighting it.
Your no is protecting the truth of what happened.
Somewhere along the line you absorbed the idea that to release a man is to agree that it was not that bad. To reclassify it. To file it under a misunderstanding, or a difficult season, or two families who see it differently. And every honest part of you knows that would be a lie, so every honest part of you refuses. It was theft. Legal theft is still theft, and a man who spent fourteen months arranging it knew exactly what he was arranging.
Good. Keep refusing that. That is not forgiveness and it never was, and nothing in Scripture asks it of you.
You were never asked to lie about a shed and a truck and thirty-one years, and Proverbs 17 says he who justifies the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, which is the opposite of what has been demanded of you at the end of long evenings, and the Holy Spirit has never once required a man to call theft a misunderstanding.
Hear this plainly: releasing a man is not excusing him. It does not reduce what he did by one gram. It is not a finding of no fault. It is not agreeing that time has made it fine, and it is not conceding the word legal.
Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, Vengeance is Mine, I will repay, says the Lord.Romans 12:19
Look at what that verse does with the case. It does not close it. It does not say the matter is nothing. It moves it. Leave it, which assumes there is something real to leave, and repay, which assumes there is something owed. You have somewhere to put what he did that is not your own chest and is not a drawer marked nothing, and Romans 12 is where God says whose account it goes on, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a fist open after nine years.
Release is not reconciling and it is not trusting
Now the sentence I want you to have before you go one step further, because men carry this weight for decades on a misunderstanding.
Releasing him is not reconciling with him. It is not trusting him. It is not going into business with him again, not lending him anything, not putting him near your accounts, not sitting down with him, and not saying one word to him about any of it. Not one verse in Scripture about forgiveness requires you to go near the person, and I am not going to tell you to.
Some of the people reading this are being asked to release somebody it would cost them dearly to be in a room with, and this page cannot see which of you that is. So it is said to everybody: You are free to do the whole of this from where you stand, without one word to him, and it is written that as far as it depends on you, you live peaceably with all, which is a phrase with a limit built into it, and the Spirit is what steadies a man while he opens his hands.
He can go on coming to every gathering. Nothing about this requires him to change, or to admit anything, or even to know it has happened.
Nobody is putting a clock on you
And one more thing, before the turn, because somebody in that family has probably implied the opposite.
If you cannot do this today, then you cannot do it today, and you are not in sin for it. There is no timetable on this anywhere in Scripture, and I will not stand over you with one. Nine years is not a scandal. A man who is still refusing is not a man who has failed; he is a man protecting something true who has never been shown where to put it.
You are not being accused this evening, and nowhere is it written that an unfinished release is disobedience, and it is the Holy Spirit and not the pressure at the end of a long dinner who does this work in a man. That is the difference between the word, which frees, and a family, which does not always.
So here is what is happening at this table tonight, with the children under it and the man himself two seats down being pleasant.
You are not being asked to shrink anything. You are being handed the same thing Scripture handed everybody: an account that is real, and a Judge who is competent, and a set of hands that were never built to hold a case for nine years.
You have open hands available tonight, and Romans 12 says leave it to the wrath of God because vengeance is His, and that is the written word and not my advice, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the actual loosening while you speak. What he did is God's to weigh, and it will be weighed properly, which is more than you were ever going to manage from a courtyard.
You are free to release him without moving one inch closer to him, and it is written that as far as it depends on you you live peaceably, which means the rest of it does not depend on you, and the Spirit is what makes that liveable at a family table.
And if this has gone somewhere heavier than a courtyard, if you are not sleeping, or the loss of that business has taken more from you than money, please bring a real person in: a counselor, your doctor, a pastor. If you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, tonight. That is not weak faith. That is what a wise man does with a weight this size, and God is not disappointed in you for needing hands.
Now, in your own time, and not your family's.
Declare this over yourself
Say these where you said his name. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says the authority to loose was given to you rather than worked up by you. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not the force of your voice. And whatever He does with the man, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why you can speak these without waiting to feel ready.
- Debt I have carried on him for nine years, you are going out of my hands in the name of Jesus. It is written that vengeance belongs to God and the repaying is His, and release is not excuse and it never was.
- Fear that letting go lets him off, get out of this courtyard. Scripture says leave it to the wrath of God, which is a leaving and not a filing under nothing, and what he did stays exactly as true in God's hands as it was in mine.
- Lord, You watched fourteen months of it and You have watched nine years of me. It is written that You repay, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit is opening my fingers, and my hands are open now and I am not going near him.
