Four Thousand Miles of Weather

This message is for the man whose cousin moved four thousand miles away and calls at Christmas to talk about the weather, and who has waited eleven years for one sentence about the boat and the money

He rings on the twenty-third. Always the twenty-third, never the day itself, and it lasts between nine and fourteen minutes.

He asks about the harbor. He asks whether it has been wet. He says what the weather is doing where he is, which is four thousand miles away and always sounds implausible. He asks after two people by name and gets one of the names slightly wrong every year in the same way, which used to be funny. He says something warm at the end. He means it.

And in eleven of those calls, not once, in any form, has the boat or the money been mentioned.

What happened is theirs. The short version is that there was a boat and a sum of money and a period of about a year, and one of them left the country at the end of it, and it was not a coincidence.

He is fifty-three. He has never once raised it on a call. He has told himself for eleven years that this is because he is waiting for the right moment, and about four years ago he stopped believing that, and has kept saying it anyway.

And people say the thing. His wife has said it. His mother said it before she died: he is your cousin, and there is only so much family left. You have to forgive him.

And that lands wrong, every time, and he has never found the words.

Maybe you have a call like that. Warm, regular, four thousand miles wide and completely empty in one specific place. And you have been told to forgive, and nobody has asked what you have been waiting for that call to turn into.

Sit down here on the dock. That is exactly where this starts.

What the waiting has actually been for

Let me name it, because nobody has, and it cannot be set down while it has no name.

This was never a wait for an apology. It has been a wait for an acknowledgment.

An apology is about him: his regret, his shame, his standing. An acknowledgment is about the record: that the year happened, that the boat and the money were what you remember, that leaving the country was not a coincidence, and that somebody with standing in the matter would say so out loud.

That is exactly why the calls are the hard part rather than the distance. Distance alone would have closed this years ago. What keeps a loop running is regular, warm contact with one thing surgically absent from it. Eleven times a man has phoned you and left the same hole in the same place, and a hole that precise starts to look like a decision.

You were never unreasonable to want a hearing, and Job 31 says, oh that I had one to hear me, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me, which is a man asking for exactly this in writing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept you unable to accept fourteen minutes of weather as a settlement.

It is not coming, and there is only so much family left is not an argument

Now the hard part, plainly, because being gentle here has cost you eleven years.

It is not coming. Not on the twenty-third, not when he is ill, not on a visit, not in a message after somebody dies. Eleven calls is not an incomplete run of data. It is an answer, given eleven times, in a form that never required him to say anything.

And I am not going to tell you he probably thinks about it on the plane. Nobody knows that, and being handed a maybe is exactly what keeps a man picking up on the twenty-third for another decade with something rising in his chest at minute nine.

Now the sentence your mother used, and I want it handled because she meant it and it was not fair. There is only so much family left is not an argument about whether the acknowledgment is coming. It is pressure. It moves you without telling you anything true.

And the half nobody says: an acknowledgment that never comes does not make the year untrue, and warmth is not a correction. A thing that goes unmentioned by the person who did it has not thereby been agreed to by anybody.

You are not waiting on the last word about this, and it is written that the eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a man where a record is actually kept.

Where the acknowledgment already is

Here is the turn, and it is not a smaller thing offered in place of a bigger one.

The acknowledgment exists. It has existed for eleven years, and it was never in his gift, because he was never in a position to give it properly.

God was here for the whole year, on this water and in that yard. He was not told about it afterward by anybody in the family. He does not hold a version assembled out of what people settled on saying, and there is not one month of it He has quietly filed under a difficult time between cousins.

And one thing before the verse, because your mother joined this to something it is not joined to. Releasing him is not reconciling with him, and it is not trusting him, and nothing here asks you to raise it on the twenty-third or put your name near his on anything ever again. You are free to finish the whole of this on your own on a dock, and it is written that so far as it depends on you, you live peaceably with all, which is a phrase with a limit built into it, and the Holy Spirit is what steadies a man doing this alone.

I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.Psalm 121:1-2

Read the question in that psalm and read where the answer does not come from. Not the hills, and not the horizon, and not from four thousand miles in any direction. You have been looking at the wrong distance for eleven years, and Psalm 121 asks the question and answers it in the very next line, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lifts a man's eyes off a horizon.

The breakthrough

So here is what is happening on this dock tonight, with the boats in and the twenty-third about five weeks out.

You are not being told to stop wanting it, and nobody here is going to use the family on you. You are being told that the acknowledgment you have wanted for eleven years is already held, by the only witness who was here for the whole of it, and that it never depended on a man who gets one name slightly wrong every Christmas.

You have a record kept by somebody who was standing on this water, and it is written that the eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a fact rather than a comfort. The year happened. He has it, and not one month has been softened in the keeping.

You are free tonight without one word from him, and Psalm 121 says my help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth, and the Spirit is what lifts a man's eyes off a horizon he has been staring at for eleven years. Not because he changes. Not because he comes home. Because the record was never in his hands and you have been listening at minute nine of the wrong conversation.

And if this has gone somewhere heavier than a phone call, if you are not sleeping, or that year took more from you than a boat, please bring a real person in: a counselor, your doctor, a pastor. If you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, tonight. That is not weak faith. That is a man calling it in on the radio, and God is not disappointed in you for it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these where you burned it. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says this authority came as a gift and not as a reward for eleven years of picking up. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not the volume. And whatever He does about any of it, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why these get said tonight.

  1. Waiting I have kept for eleven Christmases, you are over in the name of Jesus. It is written that my help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth, and it has never once been coming from four thousand miles in any direction.
  2. Argument about how much family is left, get off this dock. Scripture says the eyes of the Lord are in every place keeping watch on the evil and the good, and pressure has never once been the same thing as information.
  3. Lord, You were here on this water for the whole year and nobody had to tell You afterward. It is written that I lift my eyes and my help comes from You, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit has held the whole account for eleven years, and he can ring on the twenty-third and find me already free.
