She wakes at some point between two and half past three, most nights, and she has done for about six years now.
It is not a nightmare. There is no scene, no images, nothing you could describe to anybody. It is one sentence, arriving fully formed, in her own voice, which is the part that makes it unanswerable.
I never knew you. Depart from me.
Nineteen years in that building. She has run the children's work and she has run the kitchen and she has done the flowers and she has made up the schedule when nobody else would. She has driven old women to appointments in her own car for eleven years. She is the one they call. Ask anybody in that congregation to name a faithful person and you will hear her name in the first three, every time.
And she lies awake and hears the sentence and finds it entirely plausible.
Here is why. Because the people in that passage are the busy ones. That is the whole engine of the terror. They are not the ones who never came. They prophesied, they cast out demons, they did many mighty works, and they say so, and He says the sentence anyway. So nineteen years of service is not the defense she would like it to be. If anything, in the logic of two in the morning, it is the prosecution's exhibit.
She has told nobody. Not her husband, sleeping right there. Not the two women she has served alongside for a decade. Not the pastor. Because a fear like this cannot be raised in a hallway on a Sunday, and there is no polite way to introduce it, so it never gets introduced.
Maybe you have that sentence. It might be a different one. But it arrives in the small hours in your own voice, and it has been arriving for years, and you have never once said it out loud where somebody could hear it.
Sit down here on a folding chair. I am not going to tell you the fear is silly, and I am not going to hand you a verdict.
The word in that sentence is not what you think
Let me teach the passage, because this is a text that has been quoted at people a great deal more often than it has been read to them.
The word for knew there is not about information. He is not saying I had no data on you. It is the word used for covenant intimacy, for belonging, for a relationship acknowledged. And read what the people in that passage actually do: every sentence out of their mouths is about their own portfolio. Lord, did we not prophesy. Did we not cast out demons. Did we not do many mighty works. Three claims, all of them theirs, none of them His.
That is a group of people arriving at the door with an invoice.
And there is one more thing in that passage that is almost never quoted, and it is the phrase directly attached to His answer: you workers of lawlessness. That is not a description of a woman who has driven old ladies to appointments for eleven years. It is a description of people whose whole relationship with God is a transaction.
You are not standing at that door with an invoice, and Matthew 7 is where those three claims are written out one after another, and it is the Holy Spirit who tells the difference between a woman serving because she loves it and a person presenting a bill.
Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You? And the King will answer them, truly, as you did it to one of the least of these My brothers, you did it to Me.Matthew 25:37-40
Read who the sheep are in the other passage, the one nobody quotes at frightened people. They have no idea what they did. They cannot produce a list. They are genuinely puzzled, because the serving was never being counted by them. You have been keeping a ledger you were never asked to keep, and Matthew 25 says the ones He owns could not produce theirs at all, and the Spirit is the one who has been doing the actual counting all nineteen years.
The terror is running on the wrong engine
Now the second thing, and it is where the fear is getting its fuel.
The sentence is about being unknown. And the only conceivable evidence about whether a person is known would have to come from Him and not from them. But at two in the morning, the only source available is her own assessment of her own service, which is exactly the material the passage says is not the point.
So the fear takes the one thing that is not evidence, and runs it through the one mind that is least reliable at that hour, and produces a verdict that feels like revelation and is actually just arithmetic done in the dark.
You were known before you served a single Saturday, and 1 Corinthians 8 says if anyone loves God, he is known by God, and it is His Spirit and not your nineteen years that established it. Read that verse again. Known by God is not the reward for loving Him. It is what is true of the one who does.
Why it cannot stay in your head
Here is the most practical paragraph in this article, and I want it before the breakthrough rather than after it.
This fear is structurally unresolvable alone. At two in the morning the only instrument in the room is the mind that is generating it, and a mind will always find whatever it went out looking for. Six years is proof of that. Six more will not do it either.
So it has to be spoken. To God first, out loud, and then this week to a person with a face in daylight. Your pastor can hold this and has almost certainly heard it before, because far more people carry this exact sentence than ever say so. A counselor is worth it too, especially given six years of broken sleep, which does its own damage to a person regardless of the subject.
You are allowed to need somebody else in the room, and Galatians 6 says bear one another's burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put a plural into a verse about carrying weight.
So here is what is happening in this hall on a Saturday, with the trestle tables going up and somebody laughing by the door.
Two things, and the order is the whole point.
First, say the fear out loud to God. Plainly, in your own words, with no case attached. Just: I am afraid I am going to hear that He never knew me. You have every right to say that to Him and it does not go on a record anywhere, and Psalm 62 says pour out your heart before Him for God is a refuge for us, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a sentence like that the whole way in.
Second, and only second, say one true thing about His character out loud. About Him. Not about your service, not about your sleep. That He is honest, that He is not a trick, that He keeps His word. One thing, and then stop. This is yours today: a fear that has been said and a truth that has been said, and neither of them is a ruling on you. It is written that if anyone loves God he is known by God, and the Spirit who has kept you awake over being known did that because being known is exactly what He intends you to have settled.
Then say it to a person this week, in daylight, with a face. And if this has gone darker, if the sleep has gone entirely or you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, today. That is not weak faith after nineteen years of service. That is a faithful woman doing the sensible thing, and God is not disappointed in you for needing hands.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the empty hall. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says this authority came as a gift and not as the yield of nineteen years of Saturdays. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not the confidence in your voice at three in the morning. And whatever He does next, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why a frightened woman can say them honestly.
- Sentence I rehearse at two in the morning, you are not the verdict on me, in the name of Jesus. It is written that the people at that door arrived with three claims of their own and not one word about Him, and I have never once come to God holding an invoice.
- Ledger I keep at two in the morning, get out of my house. Scripture says the ones He owns could not produce a list at all and were genuinely puzzled when He named what they had done, and mine was never mine to count.
- Lord, You have been in this hall every Saturday for nineteen years and in the bedroom at two every night for six. It is written that if anyone loves God he is known by God, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit kept me awake about being known and He is the one who settles it, and I am saying this to a living person this week.
