Forgiving MyselfPsalm 25:7

One Sentence at Seventeen

This message is for the woman who said one sentence to her daughter across a hallway when the girl was seventeen and has been sentencing herself for it for nineteen years

The hallway was about nine feet long. That is the sort of detail a person keeps.

Her daughter was seventeen and standing at the far end of it with her coat half on, and something had been building for about three weeks, and it came out of her mother in one sentence, and she has never repeated it to anybody and I am not going to ask her to.

Her daughter is thirty-six now. They are close. They speak most days. There has been no rupture, no estrangement, nothing anybody looking in would notice, and there was a conversation about it in a car about six years ago in which her daughter said, in a completely ordinary voice, that she barely remembered it.

That did not touch it. If anything it made it worse, which is one of the strangest things about this kind of weight and the sort of thing nobody warns you about.

She is fifty-six now. Nineteen years.

And people have said the sentence to her. Her sister. A woman she walks with. A minister, once, kindly, at the end of something else. You have to forgive yourself. And every time, in a place she has never described out loud: she does not know what she is being asked to do.

She knows what it is to be forgiven by God. That happened early, at a kitchen table, on a wet afternoon much like this one, and it was real and it has stayed.

What she cannot find is the second thing. Where is it kept. What does a person actually do. Is it something you decide, and if it is, why has nineteen years of deciding not worked, and if it is not, then what on earth is anybody asking for.

Maybe somebody has told you to forgive yourself. And maybe you nodded and went home with no idea what the words meant in practice, and filed the failure under everything else you cannot seem to manage.

Sit down here by the open door. Nothing coming is going to hand you a procedure.

There is no second thing

Let me say it quietly and plainly, because you would hear an evasion coming from the other end of a field.

That second thing does not exist.

Not hidden, not further on, not something better people have found. It is not there. Nowhere in Scripture does a person forgive herself. Nobody in the book does it. Nobody is told to. The phrase does not occur anywhere in it. It arrived in ordinary speech within living memory, mostly from people trying to name something real, and what they are reaching for exists, but it is not a second pardon and there is no place you have been failing to get to.

You have not been failing at anything, and Scripture never once puts a second forgiveness between a woman and her rest, and it is the Holy Spirit who has kept you unable to find something that was never made. Nineteen years of not completing an impossible thing is not a flaw in you. That is the correct result.

Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to Your steadfast love remember me, for the sake of Your goodness, O Lord.Psalm 25:7

Read what the psalmist asks for and read what he does not. He does not ask to be enabled to stop remembering. He asks God not to. And then he grounds the request in nothing about himself at all: according to Your steadfast love, for the sake of Your goodness. You are covered by a remembering that runs on His goodness and not yours, and Psalm 25 is where that is written, and it is His Spirit and not your own long memory who decides what is held against a person.

What nineteen years has been

So if the second thing does not exist, what has been happening? Something real, and the name for it is not forgiveness.

A sentence has been served.

Not passed. Served. Nineteen years of small, quiet, daily penalties that nobody else can see. A tone taken with oneself. A certain kind of carefulness around her own daughter that the girl has never noticed and that no amount of effort could stop. The habit of taking the blame first in any room, before anybody has assigned it. Not one of those was ordered by a court. They were self-administered, and they have been going on so long that they have stopped looking like penalties and started looking like a personality.

And there is a strange, cruel thing built into a self-imposed sentence, which is that it can never end, because the only person who could release you is the person serving it, and she does not believe she has the standing.

You were never appointed to that bench, and 1 Corinthians 4 says Paul refused to judge even himself and left the verdict to the Lord, and it is the Spirit who lifts a woman out of a chair she was never qualified to sit in. If Paul stepped down from that seat, it was never built for a mother in a hallway.

Not a step to add, a sentence to stop serving

Here is the turn, and it takes something away rather than adding it.

The problem was never a second thing left undone. The problem is a first thing that was never yours to do: serving a sentence no court passed, for a case the only real court closed nineteen years ago at a kitchen table on a wet afternoon.

Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls.Romans 14:4

So the move is not to forgive yourself. The move is to say out loud that you are not the judge in this, and then to say who is. That is the whole of it. There is no technique in it and nothing to phrase correctly, and it will not feel like an accomplishment. It is a woman walking out of a room she was never sentenced to.

You have a case that was closed by the only judge with standing in it, and it is written that there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and the Spirit is what makes that a fact about a woman who said one sentence in a hallway nineteen years ago.

The breakthrough

So here is what is happening at this table this afternoon, with the door open and the rain finished on the garden.

There will be no forgiving yourself here, because there is no such act and there never was, and nineteen years of not managing it was never a failure. Instead, the actual thing, which is smaller and much harder and takes about eight seconds.

You are going to say out loud that you are not the judge in this. Then you are going to say out loud who is.

You are standing under a verdict entered a long time ago by the only court with jurisdiction, and Romans 8 says there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and the Holy Spirit is the one who applies a ruling and not a sentence a woman passes on herself. That hallway is God's to weigh and it never was yours, and He has weighed it, and He did not hand you a term to serve when He was done.

You have been serving what He never imposed, and it is written that He remembers us according to His steadfast love, and the Spirit is what makes that true about a woman with a nine foot hallway in her memory. Stop serving. Not as an achievement. As a matter of who passes sentences.

And do the ordinary things too. Say all of it out loud to one real person this week, in daylight: your sister, or the woman you walk with, or a counselor, because nineteen years of a private sentence is nineteen years without an outside voice in the room. If this has gone heavier than a memory, if you are not sleeping or you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, today. That is not weak faith. That is a sensible woman getting hands on it, and God is not disappointed in you for wanting them.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing in your own kitchen with the door open. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says this authority came as a gift and not as a reward for nineteen years of penance nobody asked for. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not how released you feel, and you may feel nothing at all. And whatever He does next, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why these get said today.

  1. Sentence I have served since that hallway, you are ended in the name of Jesus. It is written that it is before his own master that a servant stands or falls, and no court that has ever existed handed you down.
  2. Carefulness I keep around my own daughter, get out of this house. Scripture says He remembers me according to His steadfast love and for the sake of His goodness, and a woman does not have to walk carefully in a room where nobody is holding anything.
  3. Lord, You are the judge and I am not, and I have been serving a term in Your name for nineteen years. It is written that You remember not the sins of my youth, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit is walking me out of a room I was never sentenced to, and that hallway is Yours and it is already weighed.
