Nobody found her at fault. That is not a technicality and it is not a kindness. It is what happened.
The report found nobody at fault. The other family said so, out loud, in a corridor, and meant it. Her own family said so. The insurance said so and paid without argument, which anybody who has dealt with insurance will tell you is its own kind of verdict. Not one authority in the world that looked at that road on that afternoon put anything on her.
She has been finding herself at fault every day for six years.
She is forty-nine. She is not a woman who dramatizes things. If you sat with her she would tell you the sequence in the plainest possible words and would not once ask you to feel sorry for her, and she would leave out the part where she does it again in her head every night at about eleven.
And people say the sentence to her. Everybody. You have to forgive yourself. Her husband said it for the first two years and then stopped, not out of impatience but because he could see it landing like a stone. A woman at church said it three weeks ago with tears in her own eyes. And every time it comes, the same thing happens in her, which she has never told a living soul: she has no idea what is being asked.
She knows what it is to be forgiven by God. That was settled long ago, in a hospital chapel with nobody in it, and it has stayed settled and she is not confused about any of it.
What she cannot locate is the second court. The one where a woman goes to appeal a verdict that already came back in her favor. There is no such court, and something in her has known that all along, which is exactly why six years of trying to reach it have gone the way they have.
Maybe somebody has told you to forgive yourself. And maybe you nodded and went home with no earthly idea what the instruction meant, and filed the failure with everything else.
Sit down here. Nothing coming is going to hand you a procedure.
There is no appeal court
Let me say it straight out, because six years is long enough and gentleness that leaves a woman where she is has never been kindness.
That court does not exist.
Not in session elsewhere. Not backlogged. It has never been convened, anywhere, by anybody. Nowhere in Scripture does a person forgive herself. Nobody in the book does it, nobody is told to do it, and the phrase is not in there. It arrived in ordinary speech within living memory, mostly on the lips of people trying to name something true, and the thing they are reaching for is real, but it is not a second pardon and there is no bench you have failed to get in front of.
You have not been failing at anything, and Scripture never once puts a second forgiveness between a woman and her rest, and it is the Holy Spirit who has kept you unable to find a court that was never established. Six years of not reaching an impossible venue is not a defect in you. That is the correct result.
Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?Isaiah 43:18-19
Read the tense on the new thing. Now. It springs forth. Not once you have cleared something up first. You are inside a now that God is already doing something in, and Isaiah 43 is where that is written, and it is His Spirit who does the springing forth and not your review of a road.
What six years has actually been
So if that court does not exist, what has been happening? Something real, and the name for it is not forgiveness.
An appeal has been in permanent session.
Every night at about eleven. The appellant is you. The judge is you. The prosecution presents the same road, the same afternoon, the same three seconds, in exactly the same order, and it never once introduces the report or the corridor or the insurance, because the prosecution is you as well and it selects its own evidence. And there is never a ruling, because a court that was never constituted cannot deliver one. It can only reconvene tomorrow.
That is what six years has been. Not an unfinished forgiveness. A rehearing that cannot end, in a bedroom with no jurisdiction in it.
You were never appointed to that bench, and 1 Corinthians 4 says Paul refused to judge even himself and left the verdict to the Lord, and it is the Spirit who lifts a woman out of a chair she was never qualified to sit in. If Paul would not hear his own case, it was never a court for a woman who was driving.
Not a step to add, a bench to leave
Here is the turn, and it takes something away rather than adding it.
The problem was never a second thing left undone. The problem is a first thing that was never yours to do: hearing a case that has been closed by every authority that had standing, including the one that matters. And nobody can close a case she was never authorized to open. What she can do is get off the bench.
So the move is not to forgive yourself. The move is to say out loud that you are not the judge in this, and then to say who is. That is all of it. There is no technique, nothing to phrase correctly, and it will not feel like a victory. It is a woman standing up and leaving a room that was never a court.
You have a case that was closed by the only judge with standing in it, and it is written that there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and the Spirit is what makes that a fact about a woman who was behind the wheel.
So here is what is happening tonight at about eleven, when the hearing usually convenes.
There will be no forgiving yourself here, because there is no such act and there never was, and six years of not managing it was never a failure. Instead, the actual thing, which is smaller and much harder and takes about eight seconds.
You are going to say out loud that you are not the judge in this. Then you are going to say out loud who is.
You are standing under a verdict entered a long time ago by the only court with jurisdiction, and Romans 8 says there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and the Holy Spirit is the one who applies a ruling and not a rehearing. That afternoon is God's to weigh and it never was yours, and He has weighed it, and He did not hand the file back to you when He was done.
You have been hearing what He has already closed, and it is written that He says remember not the former things because He is doing a new thing now, and the Spirit is what makes that true about a woman at eleven o'clock at night. Stand up. Not as an achievement. As a matter of jurisdiction.
And do the ordinary things too. Say all of it out loud to one real person this week, in daylight: your husband, or a counselor, or the woman at church who wept three weeks ago and clearly loves you. Six years of hearing only the prosecution is six years of a rigged room. If this has gone heavier than a memory, if you are not sleeping or you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, today. That is not weak faith. That is a sensible woman getting hands on it, and God is not disappointed in you for needing them.
Declare this over yourself
Say these standing up with the light on. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says this authority came as a gift and not as a reward for a clean report. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not how acquitted you feel, and you may feel nothing at all. And whatever He does next, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why these get said tonight.
- Appeal I have been hearing for six years, you are dismissed in the name of Jesus. It is written that it is before his own master that a servant stands or falls, and this room has never had one hour of jurisdiction over me.
- Prosecutor who never reads the report, get out of this house. Scripture says He is doing a new thing and it springs forth now, and now is a word that does not wait on a rehearing of an old afternoon.
- Lord, You are the judge and I am not, and I have been hearing my own case in Your name for six years. It is written that You say remember not the former things, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit is walking me out of a court that was never constituted, and that afternoon is Yours and it is already weighed.
