He Died Without Saying It

This message is for the man whose father died four years ago having never once said sorry for what he did, and who is still organizing his own days around words that were never coming

There were four days at the end where he could still talk, and he talked, and none of it was that.

He talked about the roof. He talked about a man he had worked with in 1978 whose name nobody else in the room recognized. He asked twice about the car. He said one thing to his daughter that she has kept and will keep, and it was good, and she deserved it.

And to his eldest son, over four days, he said nothing at all about the twelve years.

That was four years ago. So it is thirty-four years of waiting altogether, and thirty of those were spent waiting on a living man, and four have been spent waiting on nothing, which he did not expect to be possible.

He is fifty-six. He runs a house that people come to. He is, by every account anybody in that family would give, the steady one.

And people say the thing to him, and they have said it with more urgency since the funeral: you have to let it go now. He is gone. There is nobody left to be angry at.

They mean it kindly and it lands wrong every single time, and he has never been able to explain why.

Maybe you are waiting too. Maybe the person is alive and well and eighty-one, or moved away, or dead four years. And you have been told the waiting is the problem, and nobody has ever once asked what you have actually been waiting for.

Sit down at this table. That is exactly where we start.

What the waiting has actually been for

Let me name it, because the people telling you to let it go have never named it and it cannot be put down while it is unnamed.

This was never a wait for an apology. It has been a wait for an acknowledgment.

Those are not the same thing and the difference is the whole article. An apology is about him: his regret, his change, his standing with you. An acknowledgment is about the events: that they occurred, that they were what you remember, that a person with authority in the matter agrees the record is what you say it is.

And that is why the waiting did not stop when he died. Death removes the apologizer. It does not touch the thing you actually needed, which was for somebody to say out loud: yes, that happened, and it was what you think it was.

You were never unreasonable to want that, and Job 16 says my witness is in heaven and He who testifies for me is on high, which is a man asking for exactly this and being told where it already stands, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept you unable to settle for less than a true account.

It is not coming, and that is not the same as it not mattering

Now the hard part, and I am not going to soften it, because softening it is what has kept you at this for thirty-four years.

It is not coming. Not in a dream, not in a letter found in a drawer, not through a cousin who remembers something he once said. Nobody is going to hand you that sentence. He had four days and he talked about the roof.

I will not tell you he probably felt it and could not say it. I do not know that, and neither does anybody who says it, and being handed a maybe is exactly what keeps a man at a window for another decade.

And now the other half, which nobody says: the fact that the apology is not coming does not make the events untrue, and it does not make the wanting foolish, and it does not settle the matter in his favor. A thing that is never acknowledged by the person who did it is not thereby canceled.

You are not waiting on the last court of appeal, and Psalm 10 says You do see, for You note mischief and vexation that You may take it into Your hands, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a man where a record is actually kept.

Where the acknowledgment already exists

Here is the turn, and it is not a consolation prize.

The acknowledgment behind those thirty-four years exists. It is not going to come from him and it never was, because he was never in a position to give it properly, and it has been in another place the entire time.

And one thing before the verse, because somebody will have joined it to something it is not joined to. Releasing him is not reconciling with him, and it is not trusting him, and there is nothing here that would have required a conversation even while he was alive. You are free to finish the whole of this on your own in a courtyard, and it is written that so far as it depends on you, you live peaceably with all, which is a phrase with a limit built into it, and the Holy Spirit is what steadies a man doing this by himself.

God was in that house for all twelve years. He was not told about it afterward. He does not have a version assembled from what anybody said later, and He does not need your account corroborated, and there is nothing in it that He has quietly downgraded to a misunderstanding.

For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the Lord will take me in.Psalm 27:10

Look at what that verse does not do. It does not ask the psalmist to reinterpret his parents. It says the plain thing, in the first half, without flinching, and it is in the book, which means God did not edit it out and did not require it to be phrased more generously. And then the second half does not promise a reconciliation. It promises a taking in.

You have an acknowledgment already on record from somebody who was actually there, and Psalm 27 is where God lets a man say the first half out loud, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a man in when the words never came.

The breakthrough

So here is what is happening at this table tonight, with the lamp lit and everybody else gone in.

You are not being told to stop wanting it, and you are not being told he probably meant to. Both of those are lies of a different size. You are being told that the acknowledgment you needed is already held, by the only witness who was there for the whole of it, and that it never depended on a man who spent his last four days talking about a roof.

You have a record kept by somebody who does not lose things, and Job 16 says my witness is in heaven and He who testifies for me is on high, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a fact rather than a comfort. The twelve years happened. He has them. Nothing about them has been softened in the keeping.

You are free tonight without one word from him, and Psalm 27 says the Lord will take me in, and that verse was written by a man who said the first half out loud first, and the Spirit is the taking in that it promises. Not because he is dead. Not because time has passed. Because the account was never in his hands and you have been watching the wrong door for thirty-four years.

And if this has gone somewhere heavier than a table, if you are not sleeping, or what happened in those twelve years is pressing on you in ways you cannot carry alone, please bring a real person in: a counselor, your doctor, a pastor. If you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, tonight. That is not weak faith. That is what a wise man does with a weight this size, and God is not disappointed in you for needing hands.

Declare this over yourself

Say these at the table with the paper gone. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says this authority came as a gift and not as something a steady man earns. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not the volume. And whatever He does about any of it, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why you can say these tonight.

  1. Waiting I have kept for thirty years, you are over in the name of Jesus. It is written that the Lord takes a man in when father and mother have forsaken him, and I am not standing at that gate for a thirty-first.
  2. Sentence I have been listening for, you are too small for this. Scripture says my witness is in heaven and He who testifies for me is on high, and what I needed was a true record and not four words from a man talking about a roof.
  3. Lord, You were in that house for all twelve years and You did not hear about it later. It is written that You will take me in, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit has held the whole account the entire time, and I am free tonight without one word from him.
