He is very good at it. That is the thing nobody outside the family understands.
Four weddings since 2009 and he has stood up at all four, and he does not read it off a card, and he gets the laugh at the right place, and he says something at the end about the family that makes two aunts cry every single time.
Everybody loves him. He is genuinely lovable. That is not a bitter sentence and it is not sarcasm and it is why this has been impossible.
What happened in 2009 is theirs and it stays theirs. What can be said is that it lasted about seven months, that it concerned a house and a signature and an arrangement that suited one person, and that a great many members of that family had a very difficult two years afterward, including his mother, who was seventy-one at the time.
Nobody talks about it. There is no argument to point at. It has been metabolized into a thing that once happened, and the man at the front of the room with the glass in his hand has never in fifteen years said one word about it in public or in private to anybody.
He is forty-five. He goes to all of it. He dances at the weddings. He would not miss one.
And people say the thing. His wife, twice. His brother, once, on a beach. And an aunt said it at the last one, holding his arm, warmly: he is family. You have to forgive him. Look at him, he is not a bad man.
That last part is what has kept this running, because it is true, and because nobody has ever explained to him why a thing can be true and be beside the point at the same time.
Maybe there is somebody who stands up at your family things and gives a good speech. And you have been told to forgive him, and you have been told he is not a bad man, and nobody has asked what you are actually waiting for.
Sit down here at this table. That is exactly where this starts.
What the waiting has actually been for
Let me name it, because nobody has, and it cannot be set down while it has no name.
This was never a wait for an apology. It has been a wait for an acknowledgment.
An apology is about him and his regret and his standing in a family. An acknowledgment is about the record: that the seven months happened, that they were what you remember, that his mother had a very hard two years, and that somebody with authority in that family would say so out loud in a room where it was heard.
That is why the toasts are unbearable in a way that his absence would not be. A toast is a man standing at the front of a room speaking on behalf of a family, warmly, about that family, with the one thing not in it. And a room that hears a warm account with a hole in it starts, slowly, over four weddings, to accept the account.
You were never unreasonable to want the record said out loud, and Ecclesiastes 12 says God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept you unable to accept a good speech as a settlement.
It is not coming, and he is not a bad man is not the point
Now the hard part, plainly, because being gentle has cost you fifteen years.
It is not coming. Not at the fifth wedding, not at a funeral, not in a quiet moment on a porch, not in a letter. He has had fifteen years and four microphones.
And I am not going to tell you he probably thinks about it. Nobody knows that, and being handed a maybe is exactly what keeps a man watching a man stand up with a glass for another decade.
Now the sentence about him not being a bad man, because your aunt was sincere and it did real damage. It is probably true. It is also entirely beside the point. Whether a man is bad is a question about him. Whether the seven months happened is a question about the record, and the second question does not get answered by the first one, and using the first to close the second is how a family keeps a warm account with a hole in it.
You are not waiting on the last word about this, and Psalm 12 says because the needy groan I will now arise, says the Lord, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a man where a record is actually kept.
Where the acknowledgment already is
Here is the turn, and it is not a smaller thing offered in place of a bigger one.
The acknowledgment exists and it has existed since 2009, and it was never in your uncle's gift, because he was never in a position to give it properly.
God was there for all seven months and for the two years after and He was in his mother's house. He was not told about it later. He does not hold a version assembled from what a family settled on saying, and there is not one week of it that He has quietly reclassified as an arrangement that suited somebody.
And one thing before the verse, because your aunt joined this to something it is not joined to. Releasing him is not reconciling with him, and it is not trusting him, and nothing here asks you to raise it, sign anything, or sit somewhere different at the next wedding. You are free to finish the whole of this by yourself at a table, and it is written that so far as it depends on you, you live peaceably with all, which is a phrase with a limit built into it, and the Holy Spirit is what steadies a man doing this alone.
Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me.Psalm 41:9
Read who that verse is about. Not a stranger and not an enemy. A man at the table. Somebody who ate the bread. Scripture has a line for exactly the man who gives the toast, and it did not soften it, and it did not add a clause about him not being a bad man.
You have a verse that names a man at the table without flinching, and Psalm 41 is where it is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put it in a book so a man at a wedding would find it fifteen years later.
So here is what is happening at this table today, with the band setting up and somebody's grandmother already dancing.
You are not being told to stop wanting it, and nobody here is going to tell you he is not a bad man as though that settled something. You are being told that the acknowledgment you have wanted since 2009 is already held, by the only witness who was there for all seven months, and that it never depended on a man who is very good with a microphone.
You have a record kept by somebody who does not forget, and Ecclesiastes 12 says God will bring every deed into judgment with every secret thing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a fact rather than a sentiment. The seven months happened. He has them, and not one of them has been softened in the keeping, and He was in your grandmother's house.
You are free today without a word from him, and it is written that even the man who ate my bread lifted his heel, and the Spirit is what makes that verse land at a wedding without turning a man bitter at a table. Not because he changes. Not because he stops giving the toast. Because the record was never in his hands and you have been listening for it at the front of the room for fifteen years.
And if this has gone somewhere heavier than a toast, if you are not sleeping, or those seven months cost your family more than a house, please bring a real person in: a counselor, your doctor, a pastor. If you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, today. That is not weak faith. That is a man doing the sensible thing, and God is not disappointed in you for needing hands.
Declare this over yourself
Say these where you burned it. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says this authority came as a gift and not as a reward for fifteen years of turning up and dancing. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not the volume. And whatever He does about any of it, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why these get said today.
- Waiting I have kept since 2009, you are over in the name of Jesus. It is written that even the man who ate my bread lifted his heel against me, and Scripture said that out loud without adding one clause to soften it.
- Argument that he is not a bad man, get off this table. Scripture says God brings every deed into judgment with every secret thing, and whether a man is bad is a question about him and the seven months are a question about the record.
- Lord, You were there for all seven months and in my grandmother's house for the two years after. It is written that You will bring every deed into judgment with every secret thing, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit has held the whole account since 2009, and I am not listening at the front of the room any more.
