In Front of the Whole Shop

This message is for the man who was blamed in front of the whole shop for something another man did twenty-six years ago, by a boss who knew the truth and never once put it right

Eleven men and a foreman and it took maybe forty seconds.

It was a Tuesday in March, and something had gone wrong on a job the week before, and it was not his. He knew whose it was and so did two other men and so, and this is the part that has never gone anywhere, did the boss.

And the boss stood in the middle of that shop floor with everybody stopped and said it to him, by name, at volume, for forty seconds, and then walked back into the office.

Nobody said anything. Two of them came up afterward, separately, and said quietly that they knew. Neither of them ever said it where it would have counted, and he has never once held that against either of them, because he understands exactly what a man has to weigh in a shop.

Twenty-six years ago.

He is sixty-three. He left that place eventually, on good enough terms, and he has had a good working life and two of his sons are in the trade. The boss is retired and lives about nine miles from here and there was a bad stretch with his health a few years back.

And in twenty-six years, in a town this size, at four weddings and a couple of funerals and any number of times in the aisle at the hardware store, that man has never once said anything about it.

And people say the thing. His wife has said it, twice, twenty years apart. A man at church said it last winter: you have to let go of this. It was a job, and it was a long time ago.

And it landed wrong, and he has never had the words for why.

Maybe you are waiting on a correction. It might be a shop floor, or a meeting, or a room where something was said about you that was not true and nobody with authority ever put it right. And you have been told the waiting is the problem, and nobody has ever asked what you were waiting for.

Sit down on the tailgate. That is exactly where this starts.

What the waiting is actually for

Let me name it, because nobody has, and a thing cannot be set down while it has no name.

This was never a wait for an apology. It has been a wait for a correction.

An apology is about the boss and his regret and his standing with you. A correction is about the record: that it was not yours, that eleven men were told something untrue, and that somebody with authority in that shop would say so out loud where the first thing was said.

That is why the two quiet men in the parking lot did not touch it, and why it would not be touched now if the boss met you in an aisle and said he was sorry. Sorry is not a correction. Only a correction is a correction, and it had to be made in front of eleven men on a shop floor, and that room does not exist any more.

You were never unreasonable to want the record straight, and it is written that a good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, so Scripture takes what happened on that floor seriously, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept you from settling for a quiet word in a hardware store.

It is not coming, and that does not make it true

Now the hard part, plainly, because being gentle about it has cost you twenty-six years.

It is not coming. Not at a funeral, not when he is ill, not through one of his sons, not in a letter. He has had twenty-six years, four weddings, two funerals and a hundred conversations in an aisle.

And I am not going to tell you he probably regrets it and cannot find a way to say it. I do not know that, and nobody who says it knows it, and a maybe is precisely what keeps a man at this for another decade.

But hear the other half, because nobody says it. A correction that never comes does not make the untrue thing true. Eleven men were told something false about you and the falseness of it has not decayed with time. Silence is not evidence, and an unchallenged record is not thereby an accurate one.

You are not waiting on the last word about this, and Isaiah 54 says every tongue that rises against you in judgment you shall refute, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a man where a true record is actually kept.

Where the record is already straight

Here is the turn, and it is not a smaller thing handed over in place of a bigger one.

The correction behind those twenty-six years already exists. It was made immediately. It was not made in front of eleven men, which is the part that has cost you, and it was made in the only place where a record actually holds.

And one thing before the verse, because somebody has probably joined this to something it is not joined to. Releasing him is not reconciling with him, and it is not trusting him, and nothing here asks you to work for that man again or say one word to him in an aisle. You are free to finish the whole of this on your own in a shed, and it is written that so far as it depends on you, you live peaceably with all, which is a phrase with a limit built into it, and the Holy Spirit is what steadies a man doing this by himself.

God was on that shop floor. He was not told afterward. He does not hold a version assembled out of what people said in the parking lot, and He has never at any point been under the impression that the job was yours.

My times are in Your hand; rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from my persecutors.Psalm 31:15

Look at what that psalm does with a man's reputation, because the verses around it are about exactly this: about being a byword, about being forgotten like one who is dead, about whispering and schemes. And in the middle of it he does not ask for a public correction. He says his times are in God's hand and asks to be delivered, and the psalm ends with him telling everybody to be strong and take courage.

You have a record that is already straight in the only place it finally matters, and Psalm 31 is where a man hands his reputation over instead of chasing it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that survivable in a town this size.

The breakthrough

So here is what is happening out here tonight, with the roller door up and the light going.

You are not being told to stop wanting the record straight, and you are not being told he probably regrets it. Both of those are lies of a different size. You are being told that the correction was made immediately, in front of the only witness whose record holds, and that it never depended on a man who walked back into an office.

You have a true record kept by somebody who was standing on that floor, and Isaiah 54 says this is the heritage of the servants of the Lord and their vindication is from Me, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a fact rather than a nice idea. It was not your job. He has always known it was not your job. Nothing about that has faded in twenty-six years.

You are free tonight without one word from him, and it is written that my times are in Your hand, and the Spirit is what makes a man able to hand over a reputation instead of chasing one round a town for the rest of his life. Not because the boss changes. Not because he is ill. Because the record was never in his keeping and you have been waiting on the wrong office door.

And if this has gone somewhere heavier than a shop floor, if you are not sleeping, or those forty seconds cost you more than a job, please bring a real person in: a counselor, your doctor, a pastor. If you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, tonight. That is not weak faith. That is a man calling for help the way he would call for a lift on a load, and God is not disappointed in you for it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these where you burned it. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says this authority came as a gift and not as a reward for twenty-six years of keeping your head down. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not the volume, and volume is what did the damage in the first place. And whatever He does about any of it, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why you can say these tonight.

  1. Waiting I have kept for twenty-six years, you are over in the name of Jesus. It is written that my times are in Your hand, and I am not standing outside an office door for a twenty-seventh year.
  2. Untrue thing eleven men were told, you have never once been the record. Scripture says a good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and God was standing on that floor and has never been under any illusion about whose job it was.
  3. Lord, You were in that shop for all forty seconds and nobody had to brief You in the parking lot. It is written that the vindication of Your servants is from You, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit has held the true record the entire time, and I am handing You my name instead of chasing it round this town.
