She was twenty-six and she said it out loud, alone, in a room, and she meant every word of it.
If You do this, I will read five chapters every night for the rest of my life.
He did it. That is the part that has made this impossible to unpick, and it is why she has never said any of this to a living person, because said out loud in a hallway it sounds either ridiculous or ungrateful and she is neither.
Twenty years. Five chapters. She has read on ferries and in the corridor outside a ward and by the light of a phone in a tent. She has read at two in the morning after a shift because the day did not count until she had. There was one night in 2019 when she read four and got up again at half past five to do the fifth.
She is forty-six.
And she is not in doubt about being forgiven. That was settled long before the bargain and it has never once come loose, and she would tell you so plainly and she would be right.
And she cannot read four.
Because underneath twenty years of five, unstated and never re-examined, there is an agreement being honored. Not a covenant. A deal. And a deal has two sides, and one side has been kept immaculately for twenty years by somebody who has never once asked whether the other party signed it.
Maybe you made a bargain. It may not be chapters. It may be a giving, or a serving, or a thing you promised in a parking lot in a bad hour years ago and have never renegotiated. And you are not in doubt about being forgiven, and the whole shape of your night is a woman honoring terms.
Sit down here where the food is. That is deliberate.
Probation is a legal condition and it ended
Let me set it out as the legal thing it is, because it is not a feeling and it will not settle as one.
Probation means the sentence stands, suspended, and conduct is observed, and the observing is what holds the suspension in place. A person on probation is not free. She is out on terms, and she knows the terms even when nobody has written them down.
That is what five chapters has been for twenty years. Conduct, performed nightly, under an agreement.
And here is the thing about the agreement, said gently, because it matters: He never signed it.
He did the thing you asked. He has done a great deal else since. But at no point did He accept a payment schedule, because He does not enter arrangements of that shape with anybody, and the whole New Testament is one long argument about exactly this.
Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?Galatians 3:3
Read what Paul is actually alarmed about there. Not people who started badly. People who started right, in the Spirit, and then quietly moved onto terms afterward, and did not notice the move because everything they were doing was good.
You began by the Spirit and were never transferred onto a schedule, and Galatians 3 is where that question is asked of people doing entirely commendable things, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is named in that verse as where the whole thing started.
You are being finished by the same Person who started it, and Philippians 1 says He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the completing rather than a woman with a reading total.
Your reading was never contemptible
Now something said carefully, because a paragraph like that could be turned into a way of making twenty years look foolish, and it is not foolish.
That is a woman who has read the Bible through more times than most people ever meet. It is not nothing. There are things she knows because of two in the morning after a shift that no course would have given her, and there is a whole way of thinking that came out of those hours, and none of it is canceled by anything in this article.
You were formed by every one of those hours and not employed by them, and 2 Timothy 3 says all Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable, and the Holy Spirit is the one who breathed it and who has been in that kitchen at two in the morning for twenty years.
The reading was good. Most of it will stay, and it should.
What is being taken out is not the chapters. It is the agreement underneath them.
You were never paying for anything with a chapter, and Titus 3 says He saved us not because of works done by us in righteousness but according to His own mercy, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can lift a contract out from under a good practice and leave the practice standing. Nobody was counting. There has been no ledger on the other side for twenty years.
This is not a new rule
And one more, before the turn, because a woman like you is already drafting the replacement.
There is no new practice here. Nobody is asking you to read three from now on, or to institute a lighter rule, or to build a discipline of grace-based reading that you will then keep with total consistency. You would be excellent at that inside a month, and it would be the same deal with the figure amended.
One thing, once. That is all any of this is.
You are already complete and there is nothing to renegotiate, and it is written that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion, and the Holy Spirit is the one who stops a woman turning a promise into an invoice she keeps paying.
So here is what is happening in this kitchen tonight, with the back door open and the book shut beside you.
You are not being told to stop reading, and nothing here says twenty years was foolish. You are being told that the agreement was never countersigned, that nobody has been keeping a total, and that a woman who cannot read four is a woman still honoring terms nobody set.
You are not on probation and you never were, and Galatians 3 says having begun by the Spirit you are not now being perfected by the flesh, and the Holy Spirit is named in that verse as where the whole thing began and where it stays. There is no ledger. There has been no ledger for twenty years.
You have a work in you that somebody else is finishing, and Philippians 1 says He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion, and the Spirit is what makes completion a thing being done to a woman rather than by one. Read four tonight. Not as a discipline. As a fact about who signed what.
And if this goes deeper than a chapter count, if you are not sleeping, or the thing you asked for at twenty-six is still doing something to you that you have never told anybody, please get a real person into it: a counselor, your doctor, a pastor. If you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, tonight. That is not weak faith in a woman who has read the whole book through. That is taking her own teaching, and God is not disappointed in you for needing hands.
Declare this over yourself
Say these with the book shut. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says this authority came as a gift and not as a return on twenty years of five chapters. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not the volume. And whatever He does next, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why these get said tonight.
- Bargain I made at twenty-six, you are void in the name of Jesus. It is written that having begun by the Spirit I am not now being perfected by the flesh, and one party to you never once countersigned it.
- Total I have been keeping every night, get out of this kitchen. Scripture says He saved us not because of works done by us in righteousness but according to His own mercy, and there is no ledger on the other side and there never was one.
- Lord, You did the thing I asked at twenty-six and You have done a great deal since. It is written that He who began a good work in me will bring it to completion, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit is the one finishing it, and tonight I read four and shut the book.
