Living ForgivenMatthew 11:29

I Say Yes to Everything

This message is for the man who has not turned down a single request in nine years, who is forgiven and knows it, and who is running a repayment plan that nobody ever issued him

The calendar is the tell, and his wife found it years ago and has never once said anything about it.

Every square has something in it. Not big things, mostly. A lift somewhere. A shed that needs a hand. Somebody's mother collected on a Thursday. A talk at a thing he does not really have time to prepare for. Two of them are for people he has met twice.

Nine years and there is not one no on it anywhere.

He is forty-eight. He is well liked and he is genuinely useful and he would tell you that this is what a person does, and half of that is true, which is what has made it survive nine years without anybody looking at it.

What matters for this article is that he is not in doubt about God. There was a stretch in his late thirties and he took the whole of it where it needed to go, and it was real, and he has never come unsettled about it since. If you asked, he would tell you plainly that he is forgiven and he would mean it.

And he has not said no to anything since roughly the month it happened.

Because underneath the calendar, unstated and unexamined, there is a schedule of payments. Nobody drew it up. Nobody sends a statement. But a yes is a payment, and a no is a missed one, and a man who is behind on a plan does not decline.

Maybe your calendar looks like that. Or maybe it is not a calendar. It is a certain kind of alertness in a room, always slightly ahead of what anybody is about to need. And you are not in doubt about being forgiven, and you would say so, and your whole week is a man meeting terms.

Sit down here, coat off. That is deliberate too.

Probation is a legal condition and it ended

Let me put it as the legal thing it is, because it is not a mood and it will not be handled as one.

Probation means the sentence stands, suspended, and conduct is being observed, and the observing is what keeps the suspension in place. A man on probation is not free. He is un-imprisoned on terms, and he knows exactly what the terms are even when nobody has written them down.

That is the shape of the last nine years. Yes, and yes, and yes, and never a missed payment, because a missed payment is how a plan gets reviewed.

And the plan does not exist. Not paid off. Not nearly paid off. Never issued.

Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.2 Corinthians 3:17

You are standing in a freedom that was not conditional on your Thursdays, and 2 Corinthians 3 is where it is written in six words, and the Holy Spirit is named in that verse as the one whose presence is the freedom rather than the one who supervises it. There is no supervision order running. There has not been one since the month you settled it.

You were released outright and not conditionally, and Romans 8 says you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear but the Spirit of adoption as sons, and the Holy Spirit is the one that verse names as the difference between the two arrangements. A conditional release has terms. An adoption has a surname.

Your service was never contemptible

Now something said carefully, because a paragraph like the one above can be turned into a way of making nine years look ridiculous, and it is not ridiculous.

Somebody's mother genuinely got collected on Thursdays. That happened, forty-something times, and it mattered to her, and it is not canceled by anything in this article. The shed got built. The talk got given and two people still refer to it.

The service was good. It is still good. Most of it is not going to stop and it should not stop.

What is being taken out is not the yes. It is the schedule underneath it.

You were never buying anything with any of it, and Titus 3 says He saved us not because of works done by us in righteousness but according to His own mercy, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can lift a payment plan out from under a good work without damaging the work. Nobody was ever sending you a statement. There was nothing to be behind on.

This is not a new discipline

And one more, before the turn, because a man like you is already three steps into building one.

There is no new practice here. Nobody is asking you to say no twice a week, or to audit the calendar every Sunday, or to institute a rhythm of declining. You would be excellent at that inside a month and it would be the same plan with the payments renamed.

One thing, once. That is the whole of it.

Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.Matthew 11:28-30

Read what He does not do. He does not remove the yoke and hand a man an empty afternoon; He offers a different one, and the word He uses for it is easy, which in that sentence means well fitted rather than undemanding. He is not against a working life. He is against a man wearing tackle that was cut for somebody else's debt.

You are being fitted with something that was made for you, and Matthew 11 says His yoke is easy and His burden is light, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can tell the difference between a calling and a repayment schedule in a man's own diary.

The breakthrough

So here is what is happening in this kitchen tonight, with your coat off and somebody else deciding what is for dinner.

You are not being told to stop serving, and nothing here says nine years was ridiculous. You are being told that the terms ended a long time ago and that nobody has been observing your conduct since, and that a man who cannot decline anything is a man who was never told his probation was over.

You are not on probation and you never were, and 2 Corinthians 3 says where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom, and the Holy Spirit is the one that verse names as the freedom rather than the supervision. There is no plan running. There has been nothing to pay since the month you took it where it needed to go.

You have a yoke that was cut to fit you, and Matthew 11 says come to Me all who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest, and the Spirit is what makes rest a thing a useful man is allowed to have. Sit down. Not as a discipline. As a fact about whose house this is.

And if this has gone deeper than a calendar, if you are not sleeping, or the reason you cannot decline anything goes back to something you have never told a living soul, please bring a real person in: a counselor, your doctor, a pastor who is not one of the people asking you for things. If you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, tonight. That is not weak faith. That is a useful man finally being on the receiving end, and God is not disappointed in you for needing hands.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with your coat off at your own table. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says this authority came as a gift and not as a return on nine years of yes. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not the volume. And whatever He does next, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why these get said tonight.

  1. Repayment plan nobody issued, you are canceled in the name of Jesus. It is written that where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom, and there is no statement coming and there never was one.
  2. Schedule I have kept under nine years of yes, get out of this kitchen. Scripture says He saved us not because of works done by us in righteousness but according to His own mercy, and Thursday still mattered to that woman and it was never a payment.
  3. Lord, You said take My yoke and You called it easy, which means fitted and not undemanding. It is written that You are gentle and lowly in heart and that I will find rest for my soul, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit is cutting off tackle that was made for somebody else's debt, and I am sitting down.
