A Warm Card Every Christmas

This message is for the man whose brother signs a warm card every December and has never once mentioned the year he took everything, and who is not going to get the sentence he has waited eighteen years for

It arrives about the fifteenth. Sometimes a robin on it, sometimes a stable, and one year, memorably, a golden retriever in a hat.

Inside, in his brother's actual handwriting, which has not changed since he was fourteen: a paragraph. A real one. Four or five lines about the year, about his knee, about the girls, and then always the same closing, and then his name.

Eighteen of them. He has kept every single one, in a shoebox, on a shelf in the garage, and he could not tell you why and he is not going to start now.

And in eighteen paragraphs, over eighteen Decembers, not one word about the year.

What happened is his and it is not going in this article. The short version, and it is his short version and not a neutral one, is that there was a business and there was a house and there was a period of about eleven months in which a man made a series of choices, and at the end of those eleven months one brother had a great deal and the other had a rental and a van.

The cards started the following December and have not missed a year.

He is fifty-seven. He is doing fine now. Genuinely fine, and he would want that said.

And people say the thing to him. His wife, who has watched him at the fifteenth of December for eighteen years, has never said it, which is one of the reasons he married her. Other people have. His pastor said it two years ago, kindly, in a parking lot after a funeral: you have to stop waiting for him to say it. He is never going to say it.

And that landed strangely, because it was true, and because the man saying it thought he was ending the matter and it was actually the first honest thing anybody had said about it.

Maybe you have a card. It may be a phone call at your birthday, or a message on a group thread, or a person who is perfectly pleasant every time you see them. Warm, regular, and empty in one specific place.

Sit down here by the fire. That is exactly where this starts.

What the card actually does

Let me name the mechanism, because it is what has kept this running for eighteen years and nobody has ever pointed at it.

A card with nothing in it is not the same as silence.

If your brother had never contacted you again, this would be a closed matter, and it would hurt in a completely different way, and it would have finished hurting like that a long time ago. What keeps a loop open is contact without content. Every December the line is reopened, warmly, and every December the one thing is not in it. And a mind treats a reopened line as an ongoing negotiation, which means that some part of you has been in a negotiation for eighteen years with a man who does not know it is happening.

That is not weakness. That is what a human being does with an unclosed loop.

You have been holding a door open for a delivery that was never dispatched, and it is written that hope deferred makes the heart sick but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man name a thing as deferred rather than pending.

It is not coming, and that does not settle anything in his favor

Now the hard part, and I will not soften it, because softening it is what has cost you eighteen Decembers.

It is not coming. Not this year, not when he is ill, not in a letter after, not through one of the girls. Your pastor was right in a parking lot and it was the most useful sentence anybody has given you.

I am not going to tell you he probably thinks about it. I do not know that, and nobody who says it knows it, and being handed a maybe is precisely what keeps a man walking to the mailbox on the fifteenth for another year.

And now the half nobody says: an apology that never arrives does not settle the matter in his favor. The eleven months happened. The record is not amended by his silence, and a thing that goes unacknowledged by the person who did it is not thereby canceled or agreed to.

You are not waiting on the last court of appeal, and Psalm 103 says the Lord works righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a man where a record is actually kept.

Where the acknowledgment already exists

Here is the turn, and it is not a consolation prize.

The wait was never for the words. It was for the acknowledgment. Somebody with standing saying out loud: that happened, and it was what you remember, and it was not made bigger in the telling.

And one thing before the verse, because somebody has probably joined this to something it is not joined to. Releasing him is not reconciling with him, and it is not trusting him, and nothing here puts you back in business with a man or asks you to answer a card differently. You are free to finish the whole of this by yourself in a front room, and it is written that so far as it depends on you, you live peaceably with all, which is a phrase with a limit built into it, and the Holy Spirit is what steadies a man doing this alone.

That already exists. It has existed for eighteen years and it has never been in your brother's gift, because he was never able to give it properly. God was there for all eleven months. He was not briefed afterward. He does not hold a version assembled from what anybody said later, and there is not one hour of it that He has quietly reclassified.

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.Psalm 147:3

Read the two verbs and read what neither of them requires. Heals. Binds up. Not one of them waits on a third party to say anything.

You are being bound up by somebody who does not need a card, and Psalm 147 is where those two verbs are written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the binding while a shoebox sits in a garage.

The breakthrough

So here is what is happening by this fire tonight, with the shoebox out in the garage and December about nine weeks away.

You are not being told to stop wanting it, and you are not being told he probably thinks about it in his own way. Both of those are lies of different sizes. You are being told that the acknowledgment you needed is already held, by the only witness who was there for all eleven months, and that it never depended on a man who writes four lines about his knee.

You have a record kept by somebody who does not lose things, and Psalm 103 says He works righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a fact rather than a sentiment. The eleven months happened. He has them. Nothing has been softened in the keeping.

You are free this year without one word from him, and it is written that He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds, and the Spirit is the binding up rather than a feeling about it. Not because he changes. Not because he stops sending cards. Because the account was never in his hands and you have been checking the wrong envelope for eighteen years.

And if this has gone somewhere heavier than a shoebox, if you are not sleeping, or those eleven months cost you more than a business, please bring a real person in: a counselor, your doctor, a pastor. If you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, tonight. That is not weak faith. That is what a sensible man does with a weight this size, and God is not disappointed in you for needing hands.

Declare this over yourself

Say these by the fire with the paper gone. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says this authority came as a gift and not as a reward for eighteen years of being decent about it. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not the volume. And whatever He does about any of it, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why you can say these tonight.

  1. Waiting I have kept for eighteen Decembers, you are over in the name of Jesus. It is written that He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds, and neither of those verbs has ever waited on a man with a pen and a robin on the front.
  2. Negotiation he does not know he is in, get out of this house. Scripture says the Lord works righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed, and the eleven months are on a record he cannot amend by staying quiet.
  3. Lord, You were there for all eleven months and You were not told about it afterward. It is written that You bind up the wounds, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit has held the whole account the entire time, and the card can come this year and find me already free.
