Nine Years Under Another Name

He was in the room when it was presented. That is the detail that has never gone anywhere.

Third row, on the aisle, with a cup of the bad coffee. Forty minutes. And in that forty minutes he heard the shape of his own thinking come back at him from a podium in somebody else's voice, including one turn of argument he could date, because he remembered the winter afternoon he worked it out and what the weather was doing.

There was no attribution. Not omitted from a slide, which happens, and which a person can put down to an oversight. It was framed throughout in the first person singular.

He said nothing. He has never fully forgiven himself for saying nothing, which is a separate matter and not the subject of this article. What matters here is the other man, who was promoted within the year, and who is now senior to him, and who greets him warmly in corridors, and who has never, in ten years, in any setting, said one word about it to anybody.

Ten years.

And people say the thing to him. His wife, who saw what it did to him, said it about four years in and has not said it since. A colleague he trusts said it last autumn in a car: you have to let this go, it is costing you more than it costs him.

And everything in him refuses. Not with a shrug and not with a maybe. It is a whole, precise, ten year no.

You know that no. There is somebody you are supposed to release and everything in you refuses, and somebody has told you what it is costing, and nobody has ever asked what the refusal is standing guard over.

Sit down here by the window. That is exactly where this starts.

What the refusal is protecting

Let me put it precisely, because you would notice at once if I did not.

The no is not protecting a career. That peace was made years ago. It is not even protecting the credit, which stopped being hoped for in about year three.

It is protecting the work.

Because there is a body of thinking that came out of nine years of winter afternoons, and in every public record that exists it belongs to somebody else, and there is no correction coming from any quarter. And in the absence of any record anywhere that says otherwise, your refusal has become the record. It is the only place in the world where the true authorship is still asserted. Put it down and the last copy goes with it.

That is not bitterness. That is an archive with one keeper.

Good. Keep refusing to file a false attribution. Nothing in Scripture asks you to, and forgiveness has never once meant certifying somebody else's account of who did the work.

You were never asked to countersign a false attribution, and Psalm 139 says He has searched you and known you and is acquainted with all your ways, which includes every winter afternoon of it, and the Holy Spirit is not asking a man to revise a record in order to be free of it.

Hear it plainly: releasing him is not excusing him. It does not restore the attribution. It is not a finding that these things are complicated, and it is not agreeing that ideas belong to whoever presents them, which is what people say when they want a conversation to end.

Do not say, I will repay evil; wait for the Lord, and He will deliver you.Proverbs 20:22

Read what that proverb actually assumes. It assumes there is evil to be repaid, or the sentence makes no sense. It does not ask you to reclassify anything. It moves the repaying to somebody with better standing and better information, and then, in four words at the end, it makes a promise about you rather than about him: He will deliver you.

You have somewhere to put this that is not your own memory of a winter afternoon, and Proverbs 20 is where the repaying gets reassigned, and the Holy Spirit is the one who opens a hand that has been closed a decade.

Release is not reconciling and it is not trusting

Now the sentence I want you to have before another word, because careful men carry this into retirement on a misunderstanding.

Releasing him is not reconciling with him. It is not trusting him. It is not raising it, not clearing the air, not collaborating again, not sending him anything unpublished ever again, and not saying one word to him about any of it for the rest of your working life. Not one verse in Scripture about forgiveness requires you to confront a person, and I am not going to tell you to.

Nor is release the same as silence. If there is ever a legitimate place for the true account to be recorded, letting the man go does not withdraw one line of it.

You are free to release him and never send that man an unpublished page again, and it is written that so far as it depends on you, you live peaceably with all, which is a sentence with a limit built into it on purpose, and the Spirit is what steadies a man while his hands come open.

Nothing here requires him to acknowledge it, to remember it, or ever to know that this has happened.

Nobody is putting a clock on you

And one more, before the turn, because your colleague said the word costing and it has been running in you ever since like an audit.

If you cannot do this today, then you cannot, and you are not in sin for it. There is no timetable anywhere in Scripture for this and I am not going to construct one out of a conversation in a car. A decade is not a scandal. A man still refusing is not a man who has failed; he is the sole keeper of an accurate record, and nobody has ever shown him where to deposit it.

You are not being accused in this study, and nowhere is it written that an unfinished release is disobedience, and it is the Holy Spirit and not an argument about cost who does this work in a man.
