Releasing ThemLuke 6:37

The Group Chat I Left

This message is for the twenty-three year old whose whole friend group turned on her in public in one evening, who has replayed the screenshots for two years, and will not be answering any of them

It took about two hours on a Thursday evening and it ended eleven years of friendships.

She was not in the room. That is the first thing. It happened in a chat, and then in another chat, and by the time somebody sent her a screenshot at twenty past eleven there were already forty-one messages about her and she had been in none of them.

She read all forty-one. Then she read them again. Then she left the chat, which took one tap and felt like nothing and was the loudest thing she has ever done.

Two years.

Nobody has apologized. Two of them tried, in a way, once, in the first month, and what they sent was mostly about how they had been feeling that week. One of them still likes her posts, which she has never worked out how to interpret and has stopped trying to.

And people say the thing to her. Her mother says it. A woman who leads her group at church said it very kindly in a coffee shop: you have to forgive them, and honestly, you should reach out. Life is too short.

And everything in her refuses. Not a maybe and not a not yet. It is a whole body no, and it arrives before any thought does, and it is loudest at two in the morning when she reads the screenshots again, which she still does, which nobody knows.

You know that no. There is somebody you are supposed to release and everything in you refuses, and somebody has already bolted a reach out onto the end of it, and nobody has ever asked you what the refusal is standing guard over.

Sit down here on the counter stool. That is exactly where this starts.

What the refusal is protecting

Let me tell you what is being guarded, because once it is named the fight usually goes out of it.

Your no is protecting the account of what happened.

Because there are eight people who were in those chats, and they have a version, and their version has been repeated more often and to more people than yours has, and there is nobody with the standing to arbitrate. And somewhere in you the refusal has become the last remaining place where the true account is kept intact. Release them and it feels like the file goes, and once the file goes, their version is the only one left.

That is not bitterness. That is a person holding on to what actually happened because she is the only one holding it.

Good. Keep refusing to revise it. Nothing in Scripture asks you to, and forgiveness has never once meant adopting somebody else's account of an evening.

You were never asked to sign their version, and Psalm 139 says He knows the word on a tongue before it gets there, which means Somebody with perfect records was already in both of those chats, and the Holy Spirit is not asking you to hand over the truth in order to hand over the case.

Hear it plainly: releasing them is not excusing them. It does not make the forty-one messages smaller. It is not a finding that it was a misunderstanding, and it is not agreeing that everybody was going through a lot that year, which they probably were and which is not the point.

Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven.Luke 6:37

Read what that verse hands over and what it does not. It moves the judging. It does not delete the events, and it does not require you to say the events were fine.

You have somewhere to put this that is not a chat and not your own head at two in the morning, and Luke 6 is where the judging gets relocated, and the Holy Spirit is the one who opens a hand that has been closed for two years.

Release is not reconciling and it is not trusting

Now the sentence I want you to have before anything else, because young people get this bolted together and carry it for years.

Releasing them is not reconciling with them. It is not trusting them. It is not rejoining the chat, not answering the message, not going to the thing in October, not explaining yourself to any of them, and not saying one word to any of the eight ever again. Not one verse in Scripture about forgiveness requires you to reach out to anybody, and I am not going to tell you to.

The woman in the coffee shop joined two things Scripture keeps apart, and she did it out of kindness, and she was still wrong to do it.

You are free to release all eight of them and never answer a single message, and it is written that so far as it depends on you, you live peaceably with all, which is a sentence with a limit built into it on purpose, and the Spirit is what steadies a person while her hands come open.

Nothing here requires them to apologize, to remember it the way you do, or ever to know that this has happened.

Nobody is putting a clock on you

And one more, before the turn, because somebody used the phrase life is too short and it sat in you like a stone.

If you cannot do this today, then you cannot, and you are not in sin for it. There is no timetable anywhere in Scripture for this and I am not going to invent one out of a phrase from a coffee shop. Two years is not a scandal, and twenty-three is not too old to still be hurt by something that happened at twenty-one.

You are not being accused in this kitchen, and nowhere is it written that an unfinished release is disobedience, and it is the Holy Spirit and not a sentence from somebody who was not there who does this work in a person.

The breakthrough

So here is what is happening in this kitchen tonight, with the window open and somebody laughing in the next room.

You are not being asked to shrink anything, and you are not being sent to reach out. You are being handed a real account, a Judge with perfect records, and a pair of hands that were never built to hold a case for two years.

You have open hands available tonight, and Romans 12 says never avenge yourselves but leave it to the wrath of God because vengeance is His, and that is the written word and not my opinion, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the loosening while you speak. What they did is God's to weigh, and He read all forty-one before you did.

You are free to release them without answering one message, and it is written that so far as it depends on you you live peaceably, which means the rest of it does not depend on you at all, and the Spirit is what makes that liveable at twenty-three.

And if this has gone somewhere heavier than a group chat, if you are not sleeping, or the two in the morning has been going on a long time, please bring a real person in: a counselor, your doctor, the woman from church who meant well and would absolutely show up for you. If you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, tonight. That is not weak faith. That is a sensible person getting hands on it, and God is not disappointed in you for needing them.

Now, in your own time, and not the coffee shop's.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with the phone still face down. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says the authority to loose was given to you rather than worked up by you. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not how convinced you sound. And whatever He does with any of the eight, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why you can say these without waiting to feel ready.

  1. Case I have kept on all of them, you are going out of my hands in the name of Jesus. It is written that vengeance belongs to God and the repaying is His, and release is not excuse and it never was.
  2. Fear that their version wins, get out of this kitchen. Scripture says He knows every word before it lands on a tongue, so the true record is already held by Somebody with better files than mine.
  3. Lord, You read all forty-one before I did, and You have been on this floor at two in the morning for two years. It is written that You repay, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit is opening my fingers, and my hands are open now and I am not answering anybody.
