The coffee is the kind that comes out of an urn and tastes of the urn, and she is holding it in a foam cup with both hands, and the man beside her is telling her it was a wonderful sermon.
It was. That is the trouble. Forty minutes on forgiveness, warm and clear and full of Scripture, and the preacher never once said a cruel thing, and she agreed with all of it, and somewhere around minute twenty a name arrived in her chest and sat there like a swallowed stone. One name. She has not said it aloud in six years and she is not going to say it now, in a church hall, with the coffee cart going round and the children under the tables and somebody's grandmother asking her whether she is coming to the Christmas thing.
Everything in her refuses. Not politely. Not with a shrug and a "not yet". It is a whole-body no, the kind you feel in your jaw. She knows what she is supposed to do. She has known for six years. And the man beside her says, warmly, meaning nothing by it, "You just have to let it go, don't you," and she nods, and the cup does not move.
You know that cup. You may have been holding it a lot longer than six years. Somebody you are supposed to forgive, and everything in you says no, and the no is not stubbornness. The no is a body that knows what he did, and it will not sign a paper it did not read.
Put the cup down for a minute. I want to tell you what you were never told, which is that the no is protecting something true, and God is not against it.
What your no is protecting
Let me tell you what your body is defending, because once you see it you can stop fighting it. Your no is protecting the truth of what happened. Somewhere along the way you were taught, or you absorbed, that to forgive somebody is to say it was not that bad. To make it smaller. To let it be filed under misunderstanding, or under he was going through a lot, or under we all make mistakes. And every honest cell in you knows that would be a lie, so every honest cell in you refuses.
Good. Keep refusing that. That is not forgiveness and it never was, and nowhere in Scripture is it asked of you; the Holy Spirit is not the one pressing that cup into your hands.
Hear me plainly: releasing a person is not excusing them. It does not shrink what was done by a single millimetre. It is not a verdict of not guilty. It is not saying it did not matter, or that you were partly to blame, or that time has made it fine. And I am not going to ask you what he did, and neither is God, because forgiveness does not require you to describe it to anybody, ever, including in prayer. God was there. He does not need the file read to Him. You are not required to describe this to anybody, including in prayer, and Psalm 38 says all my longing is before You and my sighing is not hidden from You, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a thing that never had to be spelled out.
When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.1 Peter 2:23
Look at what Jesus did with what was done to Him. He did not say it was fine. He did not say they had their reasons. He did not put it down at all, in the sense of pretending it weighed nothing. He handed it over. He entrusted Himself, and what was being done to Him, to the One who judges justly. That is the whole mechanism of release, and there is no excusing anywhere in it. You have somewhere to put what he did that is not your own hands, and it is not the bin, and it is not the drawer marked "it was nothing"; it is the hands of the One who judges justly. That is Scripture, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes it possible to open a fist that has been closed for six years.
Release is not contact, and it is not trust
Now the sentence I want you to hear before you go one step further, because I have watched people carry this weight for decades on a misunderstanding: forgiving him is not reconciling with him. It is not trusting him. It is not phoning him, writing to him, sitting in a room with him, letting him back in the door, or letting him near your children. Not one word of Scripture about forgiveness requires you to go anywhere near the person, and I will not tell you to. Some of the people reading this are being asked to forgive somebody it would be dangerous to stand in front of, and I cannot see which of you that is, so I say it to everyone: release happens between you and God, and you can do the whole of it from a distance.
You are free to release him without moving one inch closer to him, and Scripture is on your side about that. Paul says never avenge yourselves but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord (Romans 12:19). Leave it. Not fix it, not resolve it, not have coffee about it. Leave it in the only hands that can hold it justly, and the Spirit is the one who keeps a person steady while they let go.
And what if today you cannot? Then you cannot today, and you are not in sin for it, and I will not stand over you with a stopwatch. God does not put a date on this. The preacher was right about forgiveness and wrong, if he implied it, about the calendar. You are not being accused this morning; you are being handed something. That is the difference between the Word, which frees, and the pressure at the coffee table, which does not, and it is His Spirit and not the man beside you who is doing the handing.
But if you can, even a little, even one sentence, here is what release actually is: it is taking your hands off the case, not off the truth. The case is His. He is the one who judges justly. And He was there.
So here is what is happening at the coffee table, right now, with the cup going cold. You are not being asked to shrink anything. You are being handed the same thing Jesus did with what was done to Him: entrust it to the One who judges justly. You have open hands this morning, and the case is His, and what he did is God's to weigh and not yours to carry, and none of that brings you one step closer to him. That is what is written, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the actual loosening while you speak.
You are free to release him without moving one step nearer to him, and it is written that so far as it depends on you, you live peaceably with all, which is a sentence with a limit built into it on purpose, and the Spirit is what steadies a woman while her hands come open.
If the weight of this has gone somewhere darker than a coffee table, if you are not sleeping, or the thing that was done is pressing on you in ways you cannot manage alone, please talk to a real person: a counselor, your doctor, a helpline. If you have thought about ending your life, call your local emergency number or crisis line now; in the United States you can call or text 988. That is not a lack of faith. That is what a wise woman does with a weight this size, and God is not disappointed in you for needing a human being on your right.
Now, in your own time, and not the preacher's.
Declare this over yourself
Say these where you said his name, out loud. You have the standing to, and it does not depend on being ready or on having felt anything. Christ is in you, and Scripture says the authority to loose on earth was given to you in His name, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it, not the force of your voice. Jesus said whoever says to this mountain, be lifted up and thrown into the sea, and does not doubt in his heart, will have it. Says. So say it, to the ledger and to the fear, and say it under His will and not your own, because whatever He does with the man, and when, is entirely His, and the weighing was never yours.
- Ledger I keep on him, you are going out of my hands and into God's, and I say so in the name of Jesus. Release is not excuse, and it is written that He is the One who judges justly.
- Fear that releasing him lets him off, get out. It is written that Jesus did not excuse what was done to Him and He did not carry the case either; He entrusted it, and I am not going near the man, and the truth stays true in God's hands.
- Lord, You were there, and You judge justly, and You are holding what I have carried for six years. It is written that He entrusted Himself to the One who judges justly, and I thank You, because Your Spirit is loosening my fingers, and my hands are open now and I am leaving them open.
