Twenty-two years and forty-nine weeks. Three weeks short.
He can tell you the date and he can tell you what was said, which was four sentences and took under a minute and was delivered standing up in a doorway. He was not told why. There was no why given, because there did not need to be one, because of how the arrangement worked in that yard, and everybody on that crew understood the arithmetic and so did he, about four hours later, in his own truck.
Seven years.
He got other work. He is not destitute and he would be embarrassed if anybody read this and thought he was. He is sixty-one and he does two days a week now and his wife's people are good to them and they manage.
But the man who did it lives eleven minutes away and coaches a team that his grandson is not on, and they see each other at the store perhaps six times a year, and they nod.
And people say the thing to him. His wife has said it. His brother said it on the water in the spring: you have to let it go, it is eating you, it has been seven years.
And everything in him refuses. Not a maybe and not a not yet. It is a whole body no that arrives before any thought does.
You know that no. There is somebody you are supposed to release and everything in you refuses, and you have been told it is eating you, and nobody has ever asked what the refusal is standing guard over.
Sit down on the tailgate. That is exactly where this starts.
What the refusal is protecting
Let me tell you what is being guarded, because once it is named the fight usually leaves it.
Your no is protecting the fact that it was done on purpose.
Because everybody around it has settled on a softer word. That is how these things go in a yard and a town. It becomes a restructure, or timing, or one of those things, or bad luck, and after seven years there is almost nobody left who will say out loud what everybody worked out in four hours. And your refusal has become the last place where the word deliberate is still kept.
That is not bitterness. That is a man holding the only accurate account left in the county.
Good. Keep refusing the softer word. Nothing in Scripture asks you to call a deliberate thing an accident, and forgiveness has never once meant adopting the version that a yard finds comfortable.
You were never asked to call it bad luck, and Proverbs 24 says the one who says to the wicked, you are in the right, will be cursed by peoples, and the Holy Spirit is not asking a man to certify anybody's timing.
Hear it plainly: releasing him is not excusing him. It does not put three weeks back. It is not a finding that it was above board, and it is not agreeing that it was just how the arrangement worked, which is what people say when they want a conversation to end.
Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath; fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.Psalm 37:8
Read the whole of that psalm sometime, because it is not a psalm about pretending. It is a long, patient argument written by an old man who has watched exactly this happen to people, and its answer is never that it did not happen. Its answer is that the accounts get settled by somebody else, later, properly.
You have somewhere to put this that is not your own chest at a store six times a year, and Psalm 37 is where an old man says the settling belongs to God, and the Holy Spirit is the one who opens a hand that has been closed seven years.
Release is not reconciling and it is not trusting
Now the sentence I want you to have before another word, because men carry this into their sixties and seventies on a misunderstanding.
Releasing him is not reconciling with him. It is not trusting him. It is not working for him again, not shaking his hand about it at the store, not letting it go in the sense of pretending, and not saying one word to him about any of it, ever. Not one verse in Scripture about forgiveness requires you to go and see anybody, and I am not going to tell you to.
You are free to release him and nod at the store for the next twenty years without one conversation, and it is written that so far as it depends on you, you live peaceably with all, which is a sentence with a limit built into it on purpose, and the Spirit is what steadies a man while his hands come open.
Nothing here requires him to admit it, to make it good, to change, or ever to know that this has happened.
Nobody is putting a clock on you
And one more, before the turn, because your brother said seven years like it was an argument.
If you cannot do this today, then you cannot, and you are not in sin for it. There is no timetable anywhere in Scripture for this and I will not build one out of a conversation on the water. Seven years is not a scandal. A man still refusing is not a man who failed; he is a man holding the only accurate account left, and nobody has ever shown him where to set it down.
You are not being accused on this dock, and nowhere is it written that an unfinished release is disobedience, and it is the Holy Spirit and not a brother on the water who does this work in a man.
So here is what is happening down here tonight, with the crates stacked and the light going off the water.
You are not being asked to shrink anything and you are not being asked to call it bad luck. You are being handed a real account, a competent Judge who was in that doorway, and a pair of hands that were never built to hold a case for seven years.
You have open hands available tonight, and Romans 12 says never avenge yourselves but leave it to the wrath of God because vengeance is His, and that is the written word and not my advice, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the loosening while you speak. What he did is God's to weigh, and God does not need the arithmetic explained to Him and He has never once accepted the softer word.
You are free to release him and never speak to him again, and it is written that so far as it depends on you you live peaceably, which means the rest of it does not depend on you at all, and the Spirit is what makes a nod at the store survivable.
And if this has gone somewhere heavier than three weeks, if you are not sleeping, or losing that job took more from you than money, please bring a real person in: a counselor, your doctor, a pastor. If you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, tonight. That is not weak faith. That is a man calling it in on the radio, and God is not disappointed in you for it.
Now, in your own time, and not your brother's.
Declare this over yourself
Say these where you said his name. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says the authority to loose was given to you rather than worked up by you. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not the volume. And whatever He does with that man, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why you can say these without waiting to feel ready.
- Case I have carried on him for seven years, you are going out of my hands in the name of Jesus. It is written that vengeance belongs to God and the repaying is His, and release is not excuse and it never has been.
- Softer word this whole town agreed on, get off this dock. Scripture says the one who tells the wicked he is in the right is cursed by peoples, and I am not certifying anybody's timing to be free of it.
- Lord, You were in that doorway for all four sentences and You have watched me at the store every time since. It is written that the settling belongs to You, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit is opening my fingers, and my hands are off the rope now.
