Tuesday night, and the line goes almost to the back doors.
She is at the front of it, where she has been every Tuesday for eleven years. Sleeves pushed up. Oil in a little bottle in her pocket that she keeps forgetting she has. She has laid hands on this whole county by now. Diagnoses, custody hearings, layoffs, boys who will not come home. She prays specific and she prays long and she does not perform, and everyone in that building knows the difference.
Watch her hands. That is the tell.
Her hands go out to everybody. Onto a shoulder, onto a head, around two hands that are shaking. They go out all night. And they have never once turned over. Palms up, empty, receiving, the way she asks four hundred other people to hold them, and hers have never done it. Not once in eleven years. She goes home with them still turned down.
Because there is one thing. One. Not a running list, not a struggle, one thing she has never said out loud to a single living person. Not to her husband. Not to the other woman on the prayer team who she would take a bullet for. Not to the pastor. Nobody has asked, because who would ask her. She is the one who asks.
And here is what she has never once let herself notice: she has never said it to God either.
She has prayed more hours than most people have slept. She prays in her car, she prays over the sink, she prays for people whose names she reads off a card. She is not far from God. She has just learned, over eleven years, to be a magnificent intercessor with a locked drawer, and to pray in a circle so smooth around that drawer that nobody has ever seen the seam. Including her.
You know that woman. She might be you. You are the one who prays for everybody. You are the one they text. And there is one thing you have never brought to any altar anywhere, and you have talked yourself into believing that is humility, or discretion, or just how it is.
Come to the front. It is your turn and it has been your turn for eleven years.
The verse that has been used against you
I want to deal with a verse first, because I know which one has been sitting on your chest, and I know somebody quoted it at you once and did not stay to finish the thought.
Psalm 66:18. If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me. And you have read that in the mirror for eleven years and concluded that every prayer you have prayed for anybody else was going out of a mouth God had stopped listening to.
Hear what the word regard actually does there. It is not have. It is not remember. It is cherish, keep, hold onto, protect, guard as a treasure. The psalmist is talking about a person nursing a thing and defending it. You have never once cherished this, you have been crushed under it, and that is what is written and it is not the same word at all, and the Holy Spirit is not the one who taught you to read it the other way. A woman who has spent eleven years wishing a thing were not true is not regarding it. She is carrying it.
And notice something else, because it matters more than the definition: God heard eleven years of your prayers. You have watched Him answer them. That is your own evidence, in your own house, and it says plainly what the verse in the mirror said He would not do.
Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did.John 4:29
That woman at the well went and told a whole town about a conversation, and she did not tell the town the contents. She told them about the One who already knew the contents. You are looking at the same offer she got, and Scripture put her sentence in the book so a woman like you would find it, and it is the Spirit who arranges for a verse to be waiting where somebody will trip over it.
Palms up is not a demotion
Now the thing under the thing.
Somewhere in eleven years, being the one who prays stopped being a gift she carries and became the reason she is allowed in the room. And a woman who is allowed in the room because of what she does for the room cannot afford to need the room.
So the hands stay turned down. Turning them over would make her a person in the line instead of the woman at the front of it, and she has no idea who she is in that position, and she is not sure the building would know either.
You were loved before you were ever useful in a prayer line, and Romans 5 says Christ died for the ungodly while they were still weak, which is a sentence about a woman with empty hands, and the same Spirit who moves through your hands on a Tuesday is pressing that on you right now. The eleven years were never rent. Nobody was charging you. You were never buying your place at the front.
Nobody is taking your statement
And here is the part I want you to hear twice, because I think it is what has kept your mouth shut in a woman whose mouth is never shut.
You do not have to tell a person. Not your husband, not the team, not the pastor, not me. There is no verse that requires you to hand this to another human being, and I am not going to invent one to look wise. Some things a woman brings to God and to nobody else on this earth, and that is discretion, not fear.
And you do not have to describe it to God either. He was there. He is not asking for the account. You have nothing left to establish, because 1 John 1:9 calls Him faithful and just about exactly this, and it is His Spirit who applies that and not the completeness of your report.
So it can be four words. It can be one name. Psalm 32 says the bones wore out under the silence and the weight came off when the silence broke, and that psalm never records one syllable of what the man actually said. Not one. The acknowledging is what got written down.
So here is what is happening in that room tonight, with the chairs half stacked and the lights coming down.
You are going to say it. Not to the team. Not to me. To God, once, in whatever words show up, and they will probably come out thin and unfinished from a woman who prays beautifully for everybody else, and that is fine, because you have a Father who is not grading the sentence, and Psalm 103 says He knows our frame and remembers we are dust, and it is His Spirit and not your fluency that carries it.
And hear what is not going to happen. He is not going to take the gift back. He is not going to move the line away from you. You were heard all eleven years, heard right now, as you read this, by a God who was answering you the whole time you thought He had a reason not to, and that is what the written word says of Him, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it land in your hands instead of just in your head.
This is yours tonight: the front of the line, and a place in it. It is written that if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive, and the Spirit who has run through your hands for eleven years is not going to leave you standing at the front with your palms turned down.
And if what you carry is heavier than a prayer line, if it involves harm to you or anybody else, or if you have not slept right in months, get a real person into it: a counselor, your doctor, a pastor who is not on your team. If you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, tonight. That is not weak faith. That is an intercessor doing for herself what she has done for four hundred other people, and God is not disappointed in you for needing hands on your own back.
Declare this over yourself
Say these with your palms up. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says this authority was given to you and not worked up by you. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not the volume, and you of all people know what volume is worth. And whatever He does next, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why you can speak these without bracing.
- Thing I have carried up this aisle unopened, you are opened tonight in the name of Jesus. It is written that when the silence broke the wasting stopped, so you have run your last eleven years of Tuesdays.
- Fear that I am only welcome useful, get out of this building. Scripture says Christ died for the ungodly while they were still weak, and that is a woman with nothing in her hands, and tonight that is me and I am still His.
- Lord, You heard every prayer I prayed for everybody else, and You have known this the whole time. It is written that You are faithful and just to forgive, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit is turning my hands over, and the woman at the front of the line is standing in it.
