The gravel takes the sound first. Then the wind, then the gulls, then the sea itself, drawing back through the stones with a noise like a long breath in, so that fifty yards from the slipway she could sing at the top of her voice and the woman with the two collies would not turn her head.
She does not sing. She talks. Every morning, the old spaniel a little way ahead with his nose in the weed, she says things into the wind that she says nowhere else. The shopping. Her mother's name. A prayer, most mornings, in the plain words she has always used: thanks for the day and the dog and the fact that her hip let her out of bed. There is a wooden post at the far end where the breakwater runs down into the water, black and barnacled, and that is where she turns for home. It has been the turning post for six years.
And every morning, somewhere between the last beach hut and the post, the other thing arrives. It comes up her chest the way the tide comes up the stones, without hurry, and gets as far as her teeth. It has a shape she knows and no words she has ever used, because she has never used any. Not to the friend who would understand. Not to the counselor she saw for a while. Not to God, and she prays to God most days of her life, and she has a way of praying round it the way you walk round a rock pool: careful, practiced, eyes on the far side.
She reaches the post. She puts her hand on it, which is a habit, the wood cold and wet under her palm. The spaniel looks back to see if this is the turn. It is always the turn. She says nothing, and the sea is loud enough that saying nothing sounds exactly the same as saying it, and she walks home with it back down where it lives.
You know the post. Yours may be a bus stop, or the top of the stairs, or the last minute before sleep. But there is a place where the thing arrives and a place where you turn round with it still inside you, and you have been making that turn for a long time.
What the silence has been costing
I want to be careful here, because there is a version of this that makes you a coward, and that version is a lie. Carrying a thing that has never been in the air is not cowardice. It is what a person does when they have concluded, somewhere below thinking, that saying it would move the one thing they cannot afford to have move. So it stays where it is, and the keeping of it is paid for every single day.
David knew the cost and he put it into his body. When I kept silent, he wrote, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long (Psalm 32:3). Not his conscience. His bones. The body keeps the account of what the mouth refuses, and it charges for the keeping: the tiredness that sleep does not touch, the flinch when a conversation turns a certain way, the prayers that have got very good at walking round one rock pool. If your life has been more tiring than it should be, that may be part of the reason, and it is not a fault in you. It is what silence does to a person who was made to be known.
You were made to be known and not merely to be tolerated, and Psalm 139 says He searched you and knew you before there was a word on your tongue, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a relief rather than a fact about surveillance.
So here is the first thing, and I need you to hear it before you say a word.
You are already known, all the way down. Before there is a word on your tongue He knows it altogether; that is Psalm 139:4, and it is not a threat, it is a description of the room you have been standing in your whole life. The Holy Spirit who searches everything has never once been surprised by you. So the thing at your teeth is not information you would be giving God. He has had it since before you did. What confession does is not tell Him. It brings you out from behind the post to stand where He already is.
And He stayed. That is the whole of it, and I want to say it slowly, because it is the exact sentence your silence was built to keep you from testing. He knew, and He stayed. Hebrews says nothing in all creation is hidden from His sight, that everything is naked and laid bare before Him (Hebrews 4:13). Then three verses later the same writer, in the same breath, says: so come. Come to the throne with confidence, and find mercy (Hebrews 4:16). Nothing hidden, therefore come. The two are not in tension. The seeing is why the coming is safe. A God who had to be told could be surprised by what He was told. A God who already knows and is still saying come has already decided what He thinks of you, and what He thinks is mercy.
You have a standing invitation to that throne, and it was not withdrawn when the thing happened. Scripture is the invitation, in writing, and the Spirit of God in you is the one who keeps whispering come when everything else in you says turn back at the post. That whisper is not your conscience nagging. It is Him, wanting you near.
When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD," and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.Psalm 32:3, 5
Look at what David did and what he did not do. He did not write it out. He did not take it to the priest, or to Nathan, or to the men who sat with him. He said, I will confess to the LORD, and he did, and the next clause is forgiveness with nothing in between. There is no line in that psalm where God asks for detail. There is no line where the words are graded. And notice, because I think it is the tenderest thing in it: the psalm never tells us what the sin was. The Spirit who breathed that psalm kept David's thing between David and God and gave the rest of us only the shape of the relief. That is how much He is asking you to say to anybody else. Nothing. This page will never ask you to tell a person, or to write it, or to name it here. Alone, to Him, in whatever words come. That is the whole size of it.
And on the words: you were never asked to find good ones. Paul says we do not know how to pray as we ought, and the Spirit Himself helps us in our weakness, interceding for us with groanings too deep for words (Romans 8:26). If what comes out at the post is four words, or one, or a sound that is not a word at all, the Holy Spirit takes it from your mouth and finishes the sentence at the throne. It is written. You bring the air; He brings the grammar.
Some of you carry a thing that was done to you rather than by you, and it has been filed as yours to be ashamed of. I am not going to sort that out on a page, and I would not dare. But I will say this: what was done to you is not a confession you owe anybody, and if it involved harm, or is still happening, there are people trained for exactly that, a doctor, a counselor, a helpline, and reaching for them is wisdom and not weakness. And if the carrying has gone somewhere darker than tired, if the nights have started to frighten you, then please tell one human being today, and if there is any danger reach the crisis line where you live; in the United States that is a call or a text to 988. The God who says come is not offended when you call a person as well. He sends people. It is one of the ways He stays.
Now the smallness of what is asked. Jesus put faith at the size of the smallest seed a farmer keeps and said that much, spoken to a mountain, moves it (Matthew 17:20). Spoken. Not held, not thought, not walked round on a gravel beach for six years. He built the whole thing on a mouth opening, and He built it small on purpose, so that a person with almost nothing left could still do it. This does not need a whole prayer. It needs one sentence at the post, and the mountain here is not the thing itself. The mountain is the silence around it, and silence is the one mountain that moves the moment anybody speaks.
So here is what is happening now, wherever you are reading this. The thing has come up to your teeth again, because reading about it does that, and this time there is nowhere to turn back to, because I am not going to give you the walk home.
You are known and you are stayed with, right now, in this room, and both are finished facts. I am not speaking my own softness over you; I am speaking what is written in Psalm 32 and in Hebrews 4, and the Spirit who breathed both is the one carrying it into you while you read. He knew before you were born. He did not go. And He is not asking for the account, or the right words, or a witness. He is asking for the air. One time, out loud, alone, in whatever comes. Whether anything feels different afterwards is His to give and never yours to produce, and the forgiveness David got did not wait for a feeling to arrive; the verse goes straight from confessed to forgiven with nothing in between.
You have a Father who is not grading the sentence, and Psalm 103 says He knows our frame and remembers that we are dust, and it is the Holy Spirit and not your phrasing that carries a word from a beach to a throne.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, hand still on the wood. You are in Christ, and He is the one who tore the curtain, so the throne is open to you and the standing to speak at it was given to you, not achieved by you. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a groan the rest of the way; the words do not have to be good, they have to be spoken. Speak first to the thing, then to the fear that has stood between you and the post, then to God. What He does with your bones and your nights after this is entirely His to decide, however He answers, and the being known was never in question.
- Thing I turn back with every morning, you are coming into the open today, and you are said to God and to nobody else. It is written that when David kept silent his bones wasted away and when he made it known he was forgiven, and the Spirit who wrote that down asked him for no detail and is asking me for none.
- Fear that this one would move Him, you have been describing a God who does not exist. Scripture says nothing is hidden from His sight and in the same breath says come with confidence, so I am coming, in the name of Jesus, and He is exactly where He was before I opened my mouth.
- Lord, You knew this before there was a word on my tongue, and You stayed. It is written that when the covering stopped the forgiving followed in the same breath, and I am saying it to You now in the words I have, Your Spirit is finishing the sentence at the throne, and nothing about it has moved You one inch from me.
