She is very good at this. That is the first thing to say, because it is true and because it is going to matter.
Two hundred rooms, easily. Women's breakfasts, a prison chapel twice, the big one in the spring with the lights and the sound check. She knows exactly where the laugh is, and she does not milk it. She knows where to slow down. She never cries in the same place twice because she has stopped crying about most of it, which she tells people is healing and which is mostly true.
The story is real. Every word of it is real. That is not what this is about.
But there is a hinge, about two thirds of the way through, where she goes from a thing that happened to her to a thing God did, and in between those two sentences there is a gap. It is about eleven seconds wide. And in that eleven seconds she does a small elegant sidestep she has done two hundred times, a bridge sentence that is not a lie, and lands cleanly on the other side, and nobody has ever noticed.
She has never told anybody what is in the gap. Not her husband. Not the woman who books her. Not the friend she prays with on Thursday mornings. It is one thing, and it is hers, and she has walked around it in public two hundred times.
And here is the part she does not let herself look at directly. She has never told God either.
She has prayed about the rest of it for years. She has prayed the whole story back to Him, gratefully, and meant it. She has just learned to do in prayer the same thing she does on a platform: a small elegant sidestep, a bridge sentence, and out the other side. She is so practiced now that the gap has stopped feeling like a gap. It feels like the shape of the story.
You know that hinge. You may never have told a testimony in your life, and you still have one. There is a version of your own history you can say out loud, and there is a part of it you route around, and you have got so smooth at the routing that you would swear the road runs that way.
Stop on the hinge for a minute. Nobody is going to ask you what is in it.
The woman who told a whole town nothing
There is a woman in John 4 who does exactly this and gets it exactly right, and I want you to see what she actually said.
She meets Jesus at a well in the middle of the day, which is the wrong time to get water and is the whole point. He tells her about her own life, gently, and she goes running back into town. Now watch her sentence, because it is famous and almost nobody reads it carefully.
Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?John 4:29
She did not tell the town what she had done. She told the town that He knew. That is a different sentence, and the whole gospel fits in the difference. You have been handed her exact position, and Scripture wrote her line down so a woman two thousand years later would find it on a bad Tuesday, and the Holy Spirit is the one who arranges for a verse to be lying where somebody trips over it.
She did not need the town to hold it. She needed one Man who already did.
The bridge sentence is not a lie, and it is costing you
Let me be clear about something, because you are about to be harder on yourself than I am.
The sidestep is not dishonesty. A testimony is not a deposition. Nobody is required to hand a room of strangers the worst eleven seconds of a life, and any preacher who has implied otherwise has confused transparency with a toll. What you say from a platform is yours to choose and there is no sin in choosing.
The cost is not in the platform. It is that the sidestep followed you home. It got into your prayers. And a woman can end up with a beautiful, accurate, moving account of what God did for her that has one room in it He has never been invited into, and after a while she starts to believe He likes the tidied version better.
You are not more welcome in the edited account, and Psalm 139 says He knew the word before it was on your tongue, and it is His Spirit who makes an old line like that stop being information and start being relief. He was in the gap. He has been in the gap the whole time. He is the only one who has never needed the bridge sentence.
He is not asking for the unedited version
Now the small practical thing, which is smaller than two hundred rooms have made it.
You do not have to tell a person. Not your husband, not the woman who books you, not the friend on Thursday, not me. There is no verse anywhere requiring you to hand this to a human being, and I am not going to build one out of half a proverb. Some things are yours to bring to God and to nobody else on earth, and that is discretion.
And you do not have to describe it to God. He was there. He is not asking for the transcript, and there is no version of this where He compares your account against the record. You have nothing left to establish, because 1 John 1:9 calls Him faithful and just about it, and it is His Spirit who applies that and not the accuracy of your retelling.
So it can be four words. It can be one name. Psalm 32 says the bones wore out under the silence and the weight came off when it broke, and the psalm records nothing at all of what was said. Not one syllable. It records only that the man stopped going around.
So here is what is happening in the hall tonight, with the chairs pushed back and somebody stacking cups.
You are going to say it. Not from a platform. Not to me. To God, once, in whatever words show up, and after two hundred polished tellings it will almost certainly come out ugly, and that is exactly right, because you have a Father who is not scoring the delivery, and Psalm 103 says He knows our frame and remembers we are dust, and it is His Spirit and not your craft that carries it.
And here is what will not happen. He is not going to think less of the story. He is not going to take the gift off you. You were loved through every one of those two hundred sidesteps, loved right now, as you read this, by the God who was in the gap the whole time, and that is what the written word says of Him, and the Holy Spirit is what turns it from a nice idea into something in your chest.
This is yours tonight: one room with no bridge sentence in it. It is written that if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive, and the Spirit who has carried you through two hundred rooms is not going to leave you managing the last eleven seconds alone.
And if what is in the gap is heavier than a story, if it involves harm to you or to anybody else, or if you have not slept right in months, bring a real person into it: a counselor, your doctor, a pastor. If you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, tonight. That is not a failure of faith. That is a woman who has told the truth in public two hundred times telling it once where it counts most, and God is not disappointed in you for needing hands.
Declare this over yourself
Say these where nobody is listening. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says this authority was given to you rather than worked up by you. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not the delivery, and you know better than most what delivery is worth. And whatever He does next, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why you can speak these without bracing.
- Gap in the middle of my story, you are spoken into tonight in the name of Jesus. It is written that He knew the word before it reached my tongue, so you have never once been a place He could not go.
- Fear that He prefers the tidied version, get out of this room. Scripture says the woman at the well told a whole town that He knew and never told them what, and I am standing exactly where she stood.
- Lord, You were in the eleven seconds every one of those two hundred times, and You never asked me to hand it to a room. It is written that You are faithful and just to forgive, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit is walking me straight through the middle of the part I go around.
