He is the one who locks up. He has been the one who locks up for nineteen years.
Chairs stacked, thermostat down, the light over the back door that has to be flipped from inside the closet, the door pulled twice because it does not always catch. Then the lot, empty except for his car, and the sodium light buzzing on its pole, and the drive home.
Here is what he does in that lot that nobody knows about. He sits. Engine off. Not for long, six or seven minutes, and it looks from the outside like a tired man gathering himself. It is not that. It is the only place in the week where nobody needs anything from him, and he sits in it the way some people sit in a bath.
Now count what he has prayed. He has prayed over hospital beds and over caskets. He has prayed with a woman in the church kitchen at eleven at night who had just found out. He has prayed for people's sons in prison and people's daughters who would not call. He has prayed out loud, warmly, specifically, unhurriedly, for hundreds of people, and he is genuinely good at it, and every one of those prayers was real.
And there is one sentence about himself that he has never prayed. Not once. Not in nineteen years.
He knows the exact shape of it. He could say it in eleven seconds. He has come close on maybe four occasions, twice in that car, once on a highway, once at a funeral for a reason he could not explain to himself afterward. And every time, the sentence gets to the edge of his teeth and he swallows it and prays for somebody else instead, and he is very, very good at praying for somebody else instead.
You know that lot. It may not be a lot. It might be the drive home, or the ten minutes after everybody is asleep, or the shower. You are the one who prays for people. You are the one people text at midnight. And there is one thing you have never said out loud to a person, and here is the part you have never admitted: you have never said it to God either. You have prayed near it for years. You have never prayed it.
Sit still for a minute. I want to tell you why that sentence has been so hard to get out, and it is not the reason you think.
The prayer was never the disclosure
You have been treating that sentence as information. As if prayer were a transfer of a file from you to God, and this one file has been withheld, and the withholding is the sin.
That is not what is happening and it never was. Psalm 139 opens with it plainly: You have searched me and known me. Known. Past tense, finished, complete. He is not waiting to be briefed. You are fully known already, tonight, in that car, and that is not my opinion but what is written in Psalm 139, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a line like that land instead of just scan.
So if He already knows, what is the sentence for?
It is for you. It is not disclosure, it is company. A thing said out loud with God in the room stops being a thing you are alone with. That is the whole mechanism. You have been alone with it not because He was absent but because you never let Him into the sentence, and Scripture says He is a very present help, and His Spirit has been in that car every Sunday night for nineteen years.
O Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; You discern my thoughts from afar.Psalm 139:1-2
He knows when you sit down. He knows about the six or seven minutes in the lot. That verse is not surveillance and it is not a threat. It is the most tender sentence a person in your position can be handed, because it means the one thing never said out loud is the one thing that never had to be explained.
Why the sentence sticks at your teeth
Let me name it, because I think naming it takes half its weight.
Somewhere in nineteen years, praying for people stopped being something a man does and became what he is for. And a man who is for something is useful, and a useful man does not have to be a loved one. Usefulness is safer. Usefulness has a clear job description and it never asks whether you would be wanted with nothing in your hands.
So the sentence sticks because saying it would put you on the other side of the prayer. It would make you the one being prayed for, and you have not been that in nineteen years, and you are not sure the room works that way for you.
You were loved before you were useful, and Romans 5 says that while we were still weak Christ died for the ungodly, which is a sentence about a man with nothing in his hands, and the Spirit is the one pressing that on you now. The prayers you have prayed for other people were not your rent. They were overflow. Nobody was charging you.
Nobody needs the details, including God
Now the practical part, and it is smaller than nineteen years have made it.
You do not have to tell a person. Not your wife, not the elders, not a friend, not me. There is no verse that requires it, and I am not going to build one out of a proverb. Some things a man brings to God and to nobody else, and that is discretion and not cowardice.
And you do not have to describe it to God. He was there. You are not preparing a statement, and there is no version of this where He is checking your account against the record. You have nothing left to establish, because the case was closed at the cross, and 1 John 1:9 calls Him faithful and just about it, and it is His Spirit who applies that and not your thoroughness.
So it can be short. It can be one clause. It can be that word and then nothing. Psalm 32 says the bones wasted while the man kept silent and the weight lifted when he stopped, and the psalm never records a single word of what he actually said, because the wording was never the point.
So here is what is happening in the lot tonight, engine off, sodium light buzzing.
You are going to say it. Out loud. To God, once, and it will very likely come out clumsy and half-finished, and that is completely fine, because you have a Father who is not marking the sentence, and Scripture says He knows our frame and remembers we are dust, and it is the Holy Spirit and not your phrasing that carries it across.
And here is what will not happen. He will not move away from you. You were held all nineteen years while you were not saying it, held right now, as you read this, by the same hands, and that is the written promise and not a nice thought, and the Spirit is making it real to you in this exact minute. The silence was never a wall between you and God. It was a wall between you and being prayed for.
This is yours tonight: the other side of the prayer, the seat where somebody else does the talking. It is written that if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive them, and the Spirit who kept you company through nineteen years of near misses is not going to leave you swallowing this one.
And if what you carry is heavier than a parking lot, if it involves harm to you or to somebody else, or if you have not slept right in months, bring a real person in: a counselor, your doctor, a pastor who is not you. If you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, tonight. That is not a failure of faith. That is a shepherd knowing when to be a sheep, and God is not disappointed in you for needing hands.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the car before you turn the key. You have the standing to say them because Christ is in you, and Scripture says this authority was given to you rather than worked up by you. The Holy Spirit carries them, not the volume. And whatever He does next, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why you can speak without bracing for a result.
- Silence I have kept in this car, you are ending tonight in the name of Jesus. It is written that He searched me and knew me long before I opened my mouth, so there is nothing here for you to guard any more.
- Fear that I am wanted only when useful, get out of this car. Scripture says Christ died for the ungodly while they were still weak, which is a sentence about a man with empty hands, and I am that man tonight and I am still His.
- Lord, You have known the whole nineteen years and You stayed in the lot with me. It is written that You are faithful and just to forgive, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit is the one turning this seat around, and tonight the prayer is mine and I am letting it be prayed over me.
