Three Forty at the Truck Stop

This message is for the long haul driver parked at a truck stop at three forty in the morning with the engine off, carrying one thing from a road in 1998 that he has never said out loud to anybody including God

Three forty in the morning is its own country. Ask anybody who has ever been awake in it on purpose.

He is parked at the end of the lot, away from the lights, engine off, which is the part that matters, because a man who leaves the engine running is planning to go. Curtain half pulled. Boots off. A cup of something on the dash that went cold two hours ago. Sixty-one years old, thirty-four of them on the road, and he has slept in this lot maybe a hundred times.

He is a good driver. Everybody says so. Two safety awards on a wall in a house he sees ten days a month. He knows which scales are running and which diner still has real pie and how to talk to a dispatcher who is having a worse night than you are. He is the one the young guys call when a load shifts. He does not curse much. He tips well.

And there is one thing from a road in 1998 that he has never told a living person.

Not his wife, who has been in the passenger seat for a thousand miles at a stretch and knows the sound of every gear change. Not his brother. Not the chaplain who used to come through that lot with coffee and never once pushed. Nobody ever asked, because there is no reason on earth anybody would think to ask, and that has been both the mercy and the trap.

Here is the part he does not admit even lying in the bunk. He has never told God either.

He prays. He does. He has prayed at forty-five miles an hour in fog and he has prayed for his daughter, who is going through it, and he has prayed the way you pray when a state trooper's lights come on behind you. He is not a man far from God. He has just spent twenty-seven years learning to route his prayers the way he routes a load, around a certain stretch, and he can do it now without checking the map.

You know that stretch. Yours might not be a road. It might be a house, or a year, or a phone call. One thing, never said to a person, and never said to God, and you have got so good at going around it that you would swear the road runs that way naturally.

Kill the engine a minute. There is nothing coming that is going to ask you what happened.

He was on that road

I will start where an old preacher on a porch would start, which is with the thing that sounds too simple to be worth twenty-seven years.

God was there. Not watching from somewhere. There, in the cab, on that road, that night. Psalm 139 puts it as plain as anybody has ever put it: if I make my bed in the deepest dark, even there Your hand shall lead me. Even there. That is not a verse about a man being tracked. It is a verse about a man never once having been unaccompanied. You were not alone on that road, and that is what is written, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an old line like that land in a cab at three forty.

Which means the silence never hid a thing from Him. Take a second with that, because it changes what the silence has actually been costing. It never kept the load off the truck. All it did was keep you from ever pulling into the same lot as God about it.

I, I am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake, and I will not remember your sins.Isaiah 43:25

For My own sake. Not because you built a case. Not because you found the words. Because of who He is. You have a God who blots things out for His own reasons, and Isaiah 43 is where He says it in His own voice, and the Spirit is the one who takes a promise like that and puts it in a man's hands.

Nobody is taking a statement

Now hear the second part, because I think it is what has kept your teeth shut.

You do not have to tell a person. Not your wife, not your brother, not a chaplain, not me. There is no verse anywhere that requires you to hand this to another human being, and I am not going to build one out of half a line. Some things are a man's to bring to God and to nobody else, and that is not cowardice. That is judgment.

And you do not have to give God the details. He does not need the account read back to Him. You are not making a statement to an officer at the side of the road. You have nothing left to establish here, and 1 John 1:9 calls Him faithful and just about it, and it is His Spirit doing the work and not the quality of your report.

So it can be short. Four words. A place name and then nothing. Psalm 32 says the man's bones wore out while he kept quiet and the weight came off when he stopped, and that psalm never once writes down what he actually said. Not one syllable. The acknowledging is what is recorded.

What twenty-seven years of routing costs

A man can drive around one stretch of road for a long time. Fuel is the least of it.

Here is what it has actually cost. Every year the arc got a little wider. First it was that road, then it was that whole state, then it was any conversation that came within fifty miles of it, and by now there are rooms in his own house he cannot fully be in. That is what a locked thing does. It does not stay its own size. It annexes.

And underneath it all is one belief, never stated: that if God ever really got a look at that stretch, He would put him out. That is why the arc. Not shame exactly, more like a man protecting a job he loves by never letting the boss ride along.

You were bought and kept by a God who already rode that whole road with you, and Romans 8 says nothing in all creation can separate you from that love, and it is His Spirit and not your record who guarantees it. He is not looking for grounds. He has never once been looking for grounds.

The breakthrough

So here is what is happening in this lot tonight, three forty, curtain half pulled, cold cup on the dash.

You are going to say it. Not to your wife, not to me. To God, once, in whatever words show up, and they will most likely come out rough and unfinished, and that is fine, because you have a Father who is not grading the sentence, and Psalm 103 says He knows what we are made of and remembers we are dust, and it is His Spirit and not your phrasing that carries it.

And here is what will not happen. He is not putting you out. You were held on that road in 1998 and every mile since, held right now, as you read this, by the same hand Psalm 139 says was already leading you in the dark, and the Holy Spirit is the one making that true in your chest instead of just true on a page. The silence never was a wall between you and God. It was a wall between you and a clean cab.

This is yours before the sun comes up: the direct route, the whole map, a road you do not have to go around any more. It is written that if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive, and the Spirit who has ridden thirty-four years with you is not going to leave you at the last four words.

And if what you carry is heavier than a stretch of road, if you are not sleeping, or it has gone somewhere dark up in that bunk, get a real person into it: a counselor, your doctor, a chaplain. If you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, tonight, from this lot. That is not weak faith. That is a man calling for help the same way he would call for a tow, and God is not disappointed in you for it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud before you turn the key. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says this authority was given to you and not worked up by you. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not how steady the voice is. And whatever He does next, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why a man can speak these without bracing for a result.

  1. Stretch of road I go around, you are named out loud tonight in the name of Jesus. It is written that He blots out transgressions for His own sake, so you are not the load on this truck any more and you never had the papers for it.
  2. Fear that He would put me out, get out of this cab. Scripture says nothing in all creation separates a man from that love, and He was already in the passenger seat the night it happened.
  3. Lord, You were on that road with me and You have been in every lot since. It is written that You will not remember my sins, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit is the one taking my hands off the wheel of this, and tonight I am driving straight down the middle of a stretch I have routed around for twenty-seven years.
