There is a photograph in the entrance. It has been there eleven years and nobody has taken it down and nobody is going to.
She has not been through those doors in four years. She drives a different route now, which adds about six minutes and which she has never explained to anybody in the car with her.
What he did is hers and it is not going in this article and nobody has any right to ask her for it. What matters here is what happened afterward, which is that most of the people she loved in that building are still in it, and they say his name the way they always said it, and there is no version of a conversation in which she could change that, and she stopped trying in the second year.
Four years.
And people say the thing to her. Two of them said it from a platform, in a general way, without knowing they were saying it to her, which is its own particular kind of injury. A woman she used to sit with said it directly at a school gate: you have to forgive him. It is only hurting you. Bitterness is a poison you drink.
And everything in her refuses. Not a maybe. A whole body no that arrives before any thought does.
You know that no. There is somebody you are supposed to release and everything in you refuses, and somebody has told you it is bitterness, and nobody has ever asked what the refusal is actually standing guard over.
Sit down here at this table, out of that building entirely. That is exactly where this starts.
What the refusal is protecting
Let me tell you what is being guarded, because once it is named the fight tends to go out of it.
Your no is not protecting a grudge. It is protecting other people.
Because somewhere in you there is a conviction, and it has never been said out loud in these words: if I release him, the file closes. And if the file closes, then what he did becomes a private matter between him and God, and there is nobody left standing anywhere with a record of it, and the next person walks in under that photograph with nothing at all in the way.
That is not bitterness. That is a watchman refusing to leave a post.
Good. Keep refusing to leave it. Nothing in Scripture asks you to, and forgiveness has never once meant withdrawing a true account or pretending a man is safe.
You were never asked to call a dangerous thing safe, and Ephesians 5 says take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness but instead expose them, and the Holy Spirit has never once required a woman to become a character reference.
Hear it plainly: releasing him is not excusing him. It does not shrink it. It is not a finding that nothing happened, it is not a recommendation, and it does not oblige you to say one warm word about him to anybody, ever.
Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.Psalm 62:8
Look at what that verse offers and where it puts the weight. Pour it out before Him. Not into a building, not into a meeting, not into a room that will manage it. Before God, who is called a refuge in the same breath, which is a word about safety and not about niceness.
You have somewhere to put the whole of this that is not that building, and Psalm 62 says God is a refuge for us, and the Holy Spirit is the one who opens a hand that has been closed for four years.
Release is not reconciling, it is not trusting, and it is not going back
Now the sentence I want you to have before anything else, because women carry this for decades on a misunderstanding that somebody with a platform planted.
Releasing him is not reconciling with him. It is not trusting him. It is not going back into that building, not sitting under him, not being in a room with him, not answering a message from him, and not saying one word to him for the rest of your life. Not one verse in Scripture about forgiveness requires you to go near a person who has harmed you, and I will not tell you to.
Release is also not silence. If there is somewhere true and appropriate for what you know to go, releasing him does not take one word of it back.
You are free to release him completely and never walk through those doors again, and it is written that so far as it depends on you, you live peaceably with all, which is a sentence with a limit built into it on purpose, and the Spirit is what steadies a woman while her hands come open.
Nothing here requires him to admit anything, to be removed, to change, or ever to know that this has happened.
Nobody is putting a clock on you
And one more thing, before the turn, because two people said it from a platform and it landed on you like a verdict.
If you cannot do this today, then you cannot, and you are not in sin for it. There is no timetable anywhere in Scripture for this and I will not stand over you with one, and I would want to know what a person was doing with a Bible if they used it that way on a woman in your position. Four years is not a scandal.
You are not being accused at this table, and nowhere is it written that an unfinished release is disobedience, and it is the Holy Spirit and not a sentence from a platform who does this work in a person.
So here is what is happening at this table this afternoon, with the light going through the trees and that building six minutes in the other direction.
You are not being asked to shrink anything, and you are not being sent back through those doors. You are being handed a real account, a Judge with actual authority, and a pair of hands that were never built to carry a case for four years.
You have open hands available today, and Romans 12 says never avenge yourselves but leave it to the wrath of God because vengeance is His, and that is the written word and not my advice, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the loosening while you speak. What he did is God's to weigh, and He was in the room, and He does not need it explained to Him and He is not consulting anybody in that entrance hall.
You are free to release him and never go back, and it is written that God is a refuge for us, and the Spirit is what makes that word mean what it says.
And if this has gone somewhere heavier than a photograph, if you are not sleeping, or what happened is pressing on you in ways you cannot carry alone, please bring a real person in from outside that building: a counselor, your doctor, a pastor somewhere else entirely. If you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, today. That is not weak faith. That is what a wise woman does with a weight this size, and God is not disappointed in you for needing hands.
Now, in your own time, and nobody else's.
Declare this over yourself
Say these where you said his name. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says the authority to loose was given to you rather than worked up by you. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not the volume, and you of all people know what volume is worth. And whatever He does with that man, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why you can say these without waiting to feel ready.
- Case I have carried on him for four years, you are going out of my hands in the name of Jesus. It is written that vengeance belongs to God and the repaying is His, and release is not excuse and it never has been.
- Fear that letting go leaves a gate open, get out of this park. Scripture says to expose the works of darkness and never once says to become a character reference, and not one word of what I know goes back with him.
- Lord, You were in the room and You have watched four years of me driving the long way. It is written that You are a refuge for us, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit is opening my fingers, and my hands are open now and I am not going back in that building.
