It was eleven words in a meeting and it took about four seconds and it has cost three years.
He had told him at a kitchen table at about half past eleven at night, two years earlier, in the way you tell one person the thing you tell one person. He had prefaced it. That is the detail that has never stopped mattering. He had actually said, out loud, before he said it: this stays between us.
And then a room, and an agenda, and a moment where a point needed supporting, and eleven words.
The friend has never acknowledged it. Not a message, not a call, not a look across a room. It is entirely possible, and the man has thought about this more than he would like to admit, that his friend does not remember doing it.
Three years. And people have said the thing to him, gently, because he is not a man who invites bluntness: you need to forgive him. It is eating you. Life is short.
And everything in him refuses. He is not a hard person and he has never been a grudge keeper. This is different and he cannot explain why it is different, and nobody has ever asked him what the refusal is actually protecting.
You know that no. There is somebody you are supposed to release and everything in you refuses, and you have been told it is bitterness, and it is not bitterness, and nobody has ever asked you what it is standing guard over.
Sit down out here by the fire. That is exactly where we are going to start.
What the refusal is protecting
Let me tell you what is being defended, because once it is named the fight goes out of it.
It is not protecting the grudge. It is protecting your judgment.
Because underneath this sits a second injury that nobody has ever named for you: he was chosen. A man was looked at over years and judged safe, and the judgment turned out wrong, and every time releasing him comes up, something in you hears it as agreeing that trusting anybody at all was foolish. So the no comes up, and it comes up hard, because it is not defending the offense. It is defending your ability to read a person, which is the thing you now cannot do without checking.
Good. Keep refusing to call yourself a fool. That was never what was asked of you.
Hear this plainly: releasing a man is not excusing him. It does not make the eleven words smaller. It is not a finding that no harm was done, and it is certainly not a ruling that telling him was a mistake.
You were right to be the kind of man who tells somebody something, and 1 Corinthians 13 says love believes all things and hopes all things, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that from turning into a lesson never to trust again.
It is not an enemy who taunts me, then I could bear it. But it is you, a man, my equal, my companion, my familiar friend.Psalm 55:12-13
That is in the Bible. A whole psalm about exactly this, written by a man who could not get over it either, and God put it in the book rather than tidying it out. You are not carrying an unusual wound, and Psalm 55 is where Scripture takes a betrayal by a friend seriously enough to give it a poem, and the Holy Spirit is the one who arranges for a man to find it at the right time.
Release is not reconciling and it is not trusting
Now the sentence I want you to have before anything else happens, because men carry this for decades on a misunderstanding.
Releasing him is not reconciling with him. It is not trusting him. It is not telling him anything at a kitchen table again, not sitting on a board with him, not putting yourself back within four seconds of a room where a point needs supporting. Not one verse in Scripture about forgiveness requires you to hand a man your confidence a second time, and I am not going to tell you to.
Trust is not a moral obligation. Trust is a judgment about a person's reliability, and it is built and it is earned, and it can be lost by four seconds in a meeting. You are free to release a man completely and never tell him anything again, and it is written that as far as it depends on you, you live peaceably with all, and the Spirit is what makes a man steady while his hands come open.
Nothing here requires him to admit it, to remember it, or ever to know that this happened.
Nobody is putting a clock on you
And before the turn, one more thing, because somebody kind has probably implied the opposite.
If you cannot do this today, then you cannot do it today, and you are not in sin for it. There is no timetable anywhere in Scripture for this and I will not stand over you with one. Three years is not a scandal. A man still refusing is not a man who has failed; he is a man guarding something real who has not been shown where to set it down.
You are not being accused this evening, and nowhere is it written that an unfinished release is disobedience, and it is the Holy Spirit and not a friend at the end of a hard week who does this work in a man.
So here is what is happening out here tonight, with the fire going down and nobody else in the yard.
You are not being asked to shrink anything. You are being handed a real account, a competent Judge, and a pair of hands that were never built to carry a case for three years.
You have open hands available tonight, and Romans 12 says never avenge yourselves but leave it to the wrath of God because vengeance is His, and that is the written word and not my opinion, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the loosening while you speak. What he did is God's to weigh, and it will be weighed by somebody with better information than you have, including whether he remembers it.
You were never a fool for telling him, and it is written that love believes all things and hopes all things, and the Spirit is what makes it safe to have been the kind of man who trusts. That judgment of yours was not defective. It was aimed at a man who moved.
And if this has gone somewhere heavier than a fire pit, if you are not sleeping, or it has cost you more than one friendship, please bring a real person in: a counselor, your doctor, a pastor. If you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, tonight. That is not weak faith. That is what a sensible man does with a weight this size, and God is not disappointed in you for needing hands.
Now, in your own time, and not anybody else's.
Declare this over yourself
Say these where you said his name. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says the authority to loose was given to you rather than worked up by you. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not the force of your voice. And whatever He does with the man, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why you can speak these without waiting to feel ready.
- Account I keep on him, you are going out of my hands in the name of Jesus. It is written that vengeance belongs to God and the repaying is His, and release is not excuse and never has been.
- Verdict that says I was a fool to trust, get out of this yard. Scripture gives a whole psalm to a man betrayed by his own familiar friend, so being the kind of man who tells somebody something is not the offense here.
- Lord, You were at that table at half past eleven and You were in the room for the eleven words. It is written that You sustain the one who casts his burden on You, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit is opening my fingers, and my hands are open now and he is not near.
