Releasing ThemGenesis 50:20

The Field and the Signature

This message is for the woman whose brother handled the land after their father died in a way she will never call anything but what it was, and who has refused for twenty-two years to release him

Forty-one acres and a house, and the house does not matter and never did.

It is the top field. Her father cleared the top field by hand over three summers with a mule and a boy, and the boy was her brother, and she has always known that and has never once thought it entitled him to it. Her father said in front of both of them, more than once, at a table, in the ordinary way people say things, how it was to be split.

He did not write it down in a form that would hold. That is all. One document, drawn up in the last months, and she is not going to describe the circumstances of it and nobody has the right to ask her to.

Twenty-two years ago.

She is seventy-four. She sees her brother at funerals and at one wedding a decade, and they are civil, and nobody in that family has ever heard either of them raise it. She has never told her own daughter the whole of it.

And people say the thing. A woman at church said it in the spring. Her daughter said it once, carefully. You have to forgive him, Mama. He is your brother and there is not much time left for either of you.

And everything in her refuses. Not with a maybe and not with a shrug. It is a plain, whole, old refusal, and it lives in her hands.

You know that no. There is somebody you are supposed to release and everything in you says no, and you have been told it is bitterness. It is not bitterness. And nobody has ever asked you what the refusal is standing guard over.

Sit on the gate a minute. That is where this starts.

What the refusal is protecting

Let me say what your hands are defending, because once it is named you can stop fighting it.

The acres are not what is being guarded. Nobody has needed those acres in thirty years and everybody in that family knows it.

What is being guarded is a father.

Because he said it at a table, out loud, in front of both of you, more than once. And if you release your brother, something in you hears it as agreeing that your father never said it, or that it did not count, or that a man's word at his own table is worth less than a document drawn up in a bad month. And every honest part of you knows that would be a lie about a man who is not here to say it again.

Good. Keep refusing that. Nothing in Scripture asks it of you, and forgiveness has never once meant agreeing to a false account of what happened.

You were never asked to say your father did not say it, and Proverbs 12 says truthful lips endure forever, and the Holy Spirit has never once required a woman to revise a table she was sitting at.

Hear this plainly: releasing your brother is not excusing him. It does not make the document right. It is not deciding your father did not say what he said. It is not agreeing that it was a misunderstanding between two people who remember differently.

As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive.Genesis 50:20

Look at what Joseph does in that sentence and, more importantly, at what he does not. He does not say it was fine. He says you meant evil, straight out, to their faces, and the account stands. And then he moves it to the only place it can be weighed properly, which is God's hands, and he says one more thing first, in the verse before, that most people skip: am I in the place of God?

You have somewhere to put what he did that is not your own hands, and Genesis 50 is where a man names it evil and hands it over in the same breath, and the Holy Spirit is the one who opens a fist that has been closed twenty-two years.

Release is not reconciling and it is not trusting

Now the sentence I want you to carry before another thing happens, because women carry this for a lifetime on a misunderstanding.

Releasing him is not reconciling with him. It is not trusting him. It is not going to his house, not putting your name near his on anything, not raising it at a funeral, and not saying one word to him about any of it, ever. Not one verse in Scripture about forgiveness requires you to go near a person, and I will not tell you to.

You are free to release your brother entirely and never sit at a table with him again, and it is written that so far as it depends on you, you live peaceably with all, which is a sentence with a limit built right into it, and the Spirit is what steadies a woman while she opens her hands.

Nothing here requires him to admit anything, or to remember it the way you do, or ever to know that this has happened.

Nobody is putting a clock on you

And one more, before the turn, because your daughter said the thing about time and she meant it kindly and it landed like a weight.

If you cannot do this today, then you cannot, and you are not in sin for it. There is no timetable anywhere in Scripture for this and I will not stand over a woman of seventy-four with one. Twenty-two years is not a scandal. A woman still refusing is not a woman who has failed; she is a woman guarding something true who has not been shown where to set it down.

You are not being accused on this hillside, and nowhere is it written that an unfinished release is disobedience, and it is the Holy Spirit and not a shortage of time who does this work in a person.

The breakthrough

So here is what is happening at this gate, with the light going off the top field.

You are not being asked to shrink anything, and you are not being asked to say your father did not say it. You are being handed a real account, a competent Judge, and a pair of hands that were never built to hold a case for twenty-two years.

You have open hands available this evening, and Genesis 50 shows God weighing what a man meant and turning it, and that is the written word and not a comfort I invented, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the loosening while you speak. What he did is God's to weigh, and He was at that table when your father said it, and He does not need the document read out to Him.

You are free to release him without going one step nearer, and it is written that so far as it depends on you you live peaceably, which means the rest of it does not depend on you, and the Spirit is what makes that liveable at a family funeral.

And if this has gone somewhere heavier than a field, if you are not sleeping, or the whole loss has taken more from you than acreage, please tell a real person: a counselor, your doctor, a pastor. If you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line. That is not weak faith at seventy-four. That is good sense, and God is not disappointed in you for wanting a hand.

Now, in your own time, and not your daughter's.

Declare this over yourself

Say these at the gate. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says the authority to loose was given to you rather than worked up by you. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not the volume of a voice. And whatever He does with your brother, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why you can say these without waiting to feel ready.

  1. Account I have kept on my brother, you are going out of my hands in the name of Jesus. It is written that vengeance belongs to God and the repaying is His, and release is not excuse and it never has been.
  2. Fear that letting go calls my father a liar, get off this hillside. Scripture says a man can name a thing evil and hand it to God in the same breath, and Daddy said what he said and God was at the table when he said it.
  3. Lord, You heard him at that table and You have watched me at this gate for twenty-two years. It is written that You are the One who repays, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit is opening my fingers, and I am not in the place of God any more.
