Still Building the Argument

This message is for the man accused at fourteen of copying work he did not copy, by a teacher who never checked and never retracted, who is fifty-one and still assembling an argument for a room he will never be in

He can still do the whole thing. He tested this once, in a car, out loud, at fifty, and got through six minutes of it before he had to stop.

He was fourteen. It was a piece of work about the causes of a war and it took him eleven days and he was prouder of it than of anything he had done, and that is the part he has never been able to say to anybody without hearing how small it sounds.

The teacher read it in front of the class and asked where he had got it from. Not accusingly at first, which somehow made what came next worse. And then, in the space of about ninety seconds, in front of thirty-one people, a settled conclusion, an announcement, a mark of zero, and a sentence about what kind of boy does that.

He had not copied it. There was nothing to copy it from. He said so twice and was told not to make it worse, and then it was break time.

Thirty-seven years.

He is fifty-one. He has a study and a reputation and a way of speaking that people find precise and reassuring. He has published. He is good at exactly the thing he was accused of not being able to do.

And somewhere behind all of it, most weeks, still, there is a defense being assembled. New evidence occurs to him in the shower. He has thought of a better opening in the last year.

For a room that does not exist. In a school that was pulled down. To a man who is almost certainly dead.

And people say the thing. His wife said it once, gently. A colleague said it in a corridor after a meeting where something reminded him of it and it showed: it was a school thing. You have to let it go.

And it lands wrong every time and he has never once had words for why, which for a man like him is its own particular injury.

Maybe you are still preparing something. And you have been told it was a long time ago, and nobody has ever asked what room you were building it for.

Sit down here by the window. That is exactly where this starts.

What the argument was always for

Let me put it precisely, because you would notice at once if I did not.

The defense was never going to be delivered. Somewhere in you that has been understood for at least twenty years. So it has not been a plan. It has been a holding pattern, and its actual function has been to keep the record open.

Because a settled conclusion was announced in front of thirty-one people, and it was never withdrawn, and nothing in the world since has formally corrected it. Not the publications and not the reputation and not thirty-seven years of doing the thing well, because none of those are corrections, they are achievements, and an achievement does not answer a finding.

So the argument has been the only place in existence where the true account is still asserted. Stop assembling it and it feels like the finding stands unopposed.

That is not resentment. That is a man keeping the only open file.

You were never a boy who copied something, and 1 Corinthians 4 says the Lord will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept you from accepting a mark of zero as a settled matter.

It is not coming, and it was a school thing is not an argument

Now the hard part, plainly, because being gentle here has cost you thirty-seven years.

The retraction is not coming. Not in a letter, not at a reunion, not from an old classmate who suddenly remembers. The man is almost certainly dead, the school is gone, the thirty-one people are scattered, and not one of them has thought about it since roughly two weeks afterward.

And I am not going to tell you he probably realized later. Nobody knows that. Being handed a maybe is precisely what keeps a man improving an opening statement at fifty-one.

Now the sentence about it being a school thing. Your colleague meant it kindly and it was not accurate. The size of the room does not determine the size of the injury. A settled public conclusion about a fourteen year old's character, delivered by the only adult with authority in the room, is not made small by the fact that a bell rang afterward.

And the half nobody says: a retraction that never comes does not make the finding true. Silence is not evidence. An uncorrected record is not an accurate one, and thirty-seven years of it standing has not made it truer by one day.

You are not waiting on the last word about this, and it is written that the Lord will disclose the purposes of the heart, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a man where a record is actually kept.

Where the retraction already is

Here is the turn, and it is not a smaller thing offered in place of a bigger one.

The retraction exists. It was issued immediately, in the only place where a finding about a person finally holds, and it was not issued in front of thirty-one people, and that is the whole of what it has cost you.

God was in that classroom. He watched the eleven days as well. He did not need the work authenticated and He was not persuaded for one second by ninety seconds of a man's certainty.

And one thing before the verse, because your colleague joined this to something it is not joined to. Releasing him is not reconciling with him, and it is not trusting him, and there is nothing here that would have required a conversation even while he was alive. You are free to finish the whole of this on your own in a study, and it is written that so far as it depends on you, you live peaceably with all, which is a phrase with a limit built into it, and the Holy Spirit is what steadies a man doing this alone.

Search me, O God, and know my heart. Try me and know my thoughts, and see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.Psalm 139:23-24

Look at what that verse is and what it is not. It is not a man defending himself. It is a man handing over the examination entirely, including the possibility of an adverse finding, to the only examiner whose reading of him is final. That is not the posture of a man with an argument. It is the posture of a man who has put the file down.

You are being searched by somebody who has already read the whole of it, and Psalm 139 is where a man hands over the examination instead of preparing one, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that possible at fifty-one.

The breakthrough

So here is what is happening in this study tonight, with the window open and the books where they always are.

You are not being told to stop wanting the record straight, and nobody here is going to call it a school thing. You are being told that the retraction was issued immediately, in the only place a finding about a person holds, and that it never depended on a man who was certain for ninety seconds in front of a class.

You have a true reading held by somebody who watched all eleven days, and 1 Corinthians 4 says the Lord will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and disclose the purposes of the heart, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a fact rather than an ambition. You did not copy it. He has always known you did not copy it.

You are free tonight without a word from anybody, and Psalm 139 says search me and know my heart and lead me in the way everlasting, and the Spirit is what makes a man able to hand over the examination instead of preparing one. Not because the man apologizes. Not because he is dead. Because the record was never in his keeping and you have been building for a room that was pulled down.

And if this has gone somewhere heavier than a classroom, if you are not sleeping, or thirty-seven years of preparing has taken more from you than time, please bring a real person in: a counselor, your doctor, a pastor. If you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, tonight. That is not weak faith and it is not imprecision. That is a careful man consulting somebody outside his own head, and God is not disappointed in you for needing hands.

Declare this over yourself

Say these at the desk with the paper gone. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says this authority came as a gift and not as the yield of thirty-seven years of good work. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not their construction, and you will notice how plain they are. And whatever He does about any of it, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why these get said tonight.

  1. Case I have prepared since I was fourteen, you are closed in the name of Jesus. It is written that the Lord will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness, and the room I was building for was pulled down a long time ago.
  2. Sentence that calls it a school thing, get out of this study. Scripture says He discloses the purposes of the heart, and the size of a room has never once determined the size of what was said in it.
  3. Lord, You were in that classroom and You watched the eleven days as well. It is written that You search me and know my heart, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit has held the true reading for thirty-seven years, and I am handing You the examination instead of preparing one.
