Three letters in fifteen years. That is not many, and she wants that said, because people hear letters and imagine a campaign.
The first was in 2010 and it was four pages and she rewrote it eleven times. The second was in 2016 and it was one page, which she thought at the time was wisdom and now suspects was fear. The third was in 2022 and it was six lines.
Two came back. Not opened, not annotated, not returned with a note. Back through her own door in her own handwriting with a sticker on them.
The third one did not come back, and she has thought about that more than the other two put together, because not coming back is not the same as being read and there is no way on this earth to find out which it was.
She is forty-six.
He is alive. He is in a town she could name and she has never once been to it. She knows this because of an aunt who tells her things she has never asked to be told and cannot bring herself to stop.
And people say the thing. Her sister, who wrote nothing and made her peace years ago in a way she has never been able to copy, says it kindly. A woman at church said it last winter: you have to forgive him. And then, after a pause: maybe try once more. You never know.
That pause has cost her about eight months of composing a fourth letter in her head at traffic lights.
Maybe you have a letter you keep almost writing. And you have been told to forgive, and then handed a you never know, and nobody has ever asked what you were hoping a reply would say.
Sit down here with the door open. That is exactly where this starts.
What a reply was actually meant to do
Let me name it, because nobody has, and it cannot be set down while it has no name.
Those letters were not really asking for an apology. They were asking for an acknowledgment.
Not that he is sorry. That it happened. That the years were what you remember, that there was a child in a house and not a difficult person misremembering a complicated situation, and that somebody with standing in the matter would confirm the record out loud.
That is why a returned envelope hurts out of all proportion to a sticker. It is not the rejection of a letter. It reads as a ruling on the record: nothing to answer here.
You were never a difficult person misremembering a complicated situation, and Psalm 139 says in Your book were written every one of them, the days that were formed for me, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept you unable to accept a sticker as a verdict.
There is no fourth letter, and you never know is not a kindness
Now the hard part, and plainly, because gentleness here has cost you eight months already.
There is no fourth letter. Not six lines, not one page, not a card at Christmas. Fifteen years, three attempts, two stickers and one silence is not an incomplete data set. It is an answer, given three times, in a form that did not require him to write anything.
And I want to deal with you never know, because a woman at church handed it to you with genuine warmth and it has been running in your head at traffic lights ever since. Nobody knows. It is a sentence people say when they cannot bear the shape of somebody else's situation. Its actual effect on you has been eight months of composing.
And now the half nobody says. A reply that never comes does not make the years untrue and it does not settle the matter in his favor. Silence is not a finding. A record that goes unacknowledged by the person who made it is not thereby corrected.
You are not waiting on the last word about this, and Psalm 139 says every one of those days was written in His book, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a woman where a record is actually kept.
Where the acknowledgment already is
Here is the turn, and it is not a smaller thing offered instead of a bigger one.
The acknowledgment exists. It has existed the whole time, and it was never in his gift, because he was never in a position to give it properly.
God was in that house for all of it. He was not told afterward by an aunt. He does not hold a version assembled from what anybody said later, and there is not one year of it that He has quietly filed under a complicated family.
And one thing before the verse, because somebody joined this to something it is not joined to. Releasing him is not reconciling with him, and it is not trusting him, and nothing here asks you to write, or visit, or go to that town, or answer the aunt. You are free to finish the whole of this on your own at a kitchen table, and it is written that so far as it depends on you, you live peaceably with all, which is a phrase with a limit built into it, and the Holy Spirit is what steadies a woman doing this alone.
Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in His holy habitation. God settles the solitary in a home.Psalm 68:5-6
Read what God calls Himself there. Not a replacement, and not a consolation. A title He takes on purpose, in His holy habitation, which is the most formal setting in the psalm. And read the next line, because it is the one for a woman who has been writing letters: He settles the solitary in a home. Settles. Not visits. Not writes back.
You are being settled in a home by somebody who took that title deliberately, and Psalm 68 is where He takes it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that mean something in a kitchen with the door open.
So here is what is happening at this table this evening, with the rain finished and the door open.
You are not being told to stop wanting it, and nobody here is handing you a you never know. You are being told that the acknowledgment those three letters were reaching for is already held, by the only witness who was in that house for all of it, and that it never depended on a man who put a sticker on an envelope.
You have a record kept by somebody who does not forget, and Psalm 139 says every one of those days was written in His book before one of them came to be, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a fact rather than a comfort. The years happened. He has them, and not one of them has been softened in the keeping.
You are free this evening without a fourth letter, and it is written that God is a Father of the fatherless and settles the solitary in a home, and the Spirit is the settling rather than a feeling about it. Not because he changes. Not because he writes. Because the record was never in his hands and you have been posting to the wrong address for fifteen years.
And if this has gone somewhere heavier than an envelope, if you are not sleeping, or what happened in that house is pressing on you in ways you cannot carry alone, please bring a real person in: a counselor, your doctor, a pastor. If you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, tonight. That is not weak faith. That is a sensible woman getting hands on it, and God is not disappointed in you for needing them.
Declare this over yourself
Say these at the table with the paper gone. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says this authority came as a gift and not as a reward for fifteen years of trying properly. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not how steady your voice is. And whatever He does about any of it, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why these get said tonight.
- Fourth letter I keep almost writing, you are not being written in the name of Jesus. It is written that God settles the solitary in a home, and settling is a thing that has already happened here and it did not come through the mail.
- Sticker on a returned envelope, you are not a ruling. Scripture says every one of my days was written in His book, and a man who did not open a letter has never once had the standing to close a record.
- Lord, You were in that house for all of it and nobody had to tell You afterward. It is written that You are a Father of the fatherless in Your holy habitation, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit has held the whole account the entire time, and I am not posting to that address again.
