Promoted the Same Month

This message is for the woman whose supervisor put her name on a report that was not true, was promoted the same month, and has passed her in that hallway three thousand times without a word

Twelve pages and her name in the box marked prepared by.

She did not prepare it. She had prepared something else, which was accurate, and which she still has, and which she has never shown to a single person in seven years because she cannot work out what showing it would achieve.

What went upstairs had her name on it and three findings in it that were not in hers.

The supervisor was promoted the same month. Not as a reward for the report, or not obviously, and she has never once claimed a straight line between those two facts out loud to anybody, and she has thought about the straight line most days for seven years.

Nobody was ever told. There was no meeting. Nothing happened at all, which is the thing about this kind of injury that nobody who has not had one ever quite believes: the absence of any event whatsoever is exactly what makes it unfinishable.

They still work in the same building. Different floors now. She has calculated, once, at three in the morning, what three thousand passes in a hallway over seven years works out at, and she wishes she had not done the calculation because now she knows the number.

And people say the thing. Her husband said it, more than once, until she asked him to stop, and he stopped, and she has always been grateful. A woman at church said it in the summer: you have to forgive her and let it go, or it will follow you into the next job.

And it lands wrong, every time, and she has never had the words for why.

Maybe there is somebody you pass. Perfectly civil, every time, with a thing between you that has never once been named out loud by either of you. And you have been told to let it go, and nobody has asked what you have been waiting for.

Sit down here at the end of the table. That is exactly where this starts.

What the waiting has actually been for

Let me name it, because nobody has, and it cannot be set down while it has no name.

This was never a wait for an apology. It has been a wait for a correction.

An apology is about her: her regret, her conscience, her standing with you. A correction is about the record: that the report went up with your name on it, that three of the findings were not yours, and that somebody with authority would say so out loud in a place where it was heard.

That is why nothing has moved in seven years. Nothing can move, because nothing ever happened. There was no meeting to be corrected, no minute to be amended, no room in which the thing was ever said and could therefore be unsaid. And a mind cannot close a loop that was never formally opened.

You were never unreasonable to want the record straight, and Proverbs 15 says the eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept you unable to accept a civil nod as a settlement.

It is not coming, and it will follow you is not an argument

Now the hard part, plainly, because being gentle here has cost you seven years.

It is not coming. Not at a leaving do, not if she moves on, not in an email that begins with the words I have been thinking. Seven years, three thousand passes and a promotion is not an incomplete answer. It is an answer, delivered continuously, in a form that never required her to say a word.

And I am not going to tell you she probably feels it and cannot say it. Nobody knows that. Being handed a maybe is exactly what has you looking up in a hallway three thousand times.

Now the sentence about it following her into the next job. That woman meant it warmly and it was not fair, and it does a specific thing: it moves the problem off the report and onto the person carrying it. It turns an injustice into a piece of personal baggage somebody is now responsible for managing. That is not what happened. What happened is that twelve pages went up with your name on them.

And the half nobody says: a correction that never comes does not make the report true. Silence is not a finding. An unamended record is not thereby an accurate one.

You are not waiting on the last word about this, and Psalm 9 says the Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble, and those who know Your name put their trust in You, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a woman where a record is actually kept.

Where the correction already is

Here is the turn, and it is not a smaller thing offered in place of a bigger one.

The correction exists. It was made immediately, and it was not made where you could see it, and that is the whole of what it has cost you.

God read both documents. Yours and hers. He did not need either of them explained, He was not misled for one second by a name in a box, and there is nothing in the version that went upstairs that He has ever at any point believed.

And one thing before the verse, because somebody joined this to something it is not joined to. Releasing her is not reconciling with her, and it is not trusting her, and nothing here asks you to raise it, work under her again, or say one word in that hallway. You are free to finish the whole of this on your own in a kitchen, and it is written that so far as it depends on you, you live peaceably with all, which is a phrase with a limit built into it, and the Holy Spirit is what steadies a woman doing this alone.

The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. And those who know Your name put their trust in You, for You, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.Psalm 9:9-10

Read what a stronghold is and is not. It is not a correction issued to a building. It is a place a person is safe inside while the record stays exactly as wrong as it is out there. You are inside something that does not depend on a hallway, and Psalm 9 is where the word stronghold is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a woman able to walk a corridor from inside it.

The breakthrough

So here is what is happening in this hall today, with the urn on and somebody calling for more plates.

You are not being told to stop wanting the record straight, and nobody here is going to turn this into your baggage. You are being told that the correction was made immediately, by the only reader whose verdict on those two documents finally counts, and that it never depended on a woman who was promoted the same month.

You have a true record read by somebody who was not misled for one second, and Proverbs 15 says the eyes of the Lord are in every place keeping watch on the evil and the good, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a fact rather than a sentiment. Three of those findings were not yours. He has always known which three.

You are free today without one word in that hallway, and Psalm 9 says the Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed and has not forsaken those who seek Him, and the Spirit is what makes a stronghold something a woman can walk a corridor from inside. Not because she admits it. Not because she leaves. Because the correction was never in her hands and you have been looking up at the wrong face three thousand times.

And if this has gone somewhere heavier than a report, if you are not sleeping, or seven years of that building has taken more from you than a promotion, please bring a real person in: a counselor, your doctor, a pastor. If you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, today. That is not weak faith. That is a sensible woman getting hands on it, and God is not disappointed in you for needing them.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with the paper gone. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says this authority came as a gift and not as a reward for seven years of being civil in a hallway. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not the volume. And whatever He does about any of it, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why these get said today.

  1. Waiting I have kept in that hallway, you are over in the name of Jesus. It is written that the Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed and has not forsaken those who seek Him, and a stronghold is not a thing that gets issued at a leaving do.
  2. Sentence that says it will follow me, get out of this hall. Scripture says the eyes of the Lord are in every place keeping watch on the evil and the good, and twelve pages went up with my name on them and that is not my baggage to carry.
  3. Lord, You read both documents and nobody had to explain either of them to You. It is written that You have not forsaken those who seek You, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit has held the true record for seven years, and I am not looking up in that hallway any more.
