I Put It Back on the Shelf

This message is for the woman who has not bought one thing for herself in fifteen years and puts it back on the shelf every single time, because spending on herself would be a claim on a standing she believes she is still working off

She had it in her hand for about four minutes and then she put it back and bought the thing for her daughter instead.

It was not expensive. That is what makes this hard to explain to anybody, and why she has never tried. If it had been expensive there would be a story: money is tight, times are hard, everybody understands. It was not expensive. It was ordinary, and she wanted it, and she held it, and she put it back.

She has been doing that for fifteen years.

Not for the family. The family gets things. Her daughter has never once gone without, and there is a granddaughter now, and the granddaughter gets everything, and she would fight anybody who suggested otherwise.

For herself: nothing. Not a coat, not a chair, not a book that was not on offer. There is always a reason, and the reasons are perfectly good, and they arrive before she has finished reaching.

What matters here is that she is not in doubt about God. She settled the whole of it fifteen years ago, in the year everything went wrong, and it was real and it has never once come loose. If you asked, she would tell you plainly that she is forgiven, and she would mean it, and she is right.

And she has not bought herself one thing since.

Because underneath fifteen years of putting things back, unstated and never examined, there is an arrangement running: a woman who is working something off does not get to draw on the account. Buying something for yourself is what a person does whose balance is clear. She has never once believed her balance is clear.

Maybe you put things back. It may not be a shelf. It may be an afternoon, or a chair by the window, or the good plate. And you are not in doubt about being forgiven, and you would say so, and the whole shape of your week is a woman keeping to terms.

Sit down here where the food is. Somebody made a great deal of it and some of it is for you, which is deliberate.

Probation is a legal condition and it ended

Let me set it out as the legal matter it is, because it is not a mood and it will not settle as one.

Probation means the sentence stands, suspended, and conduct is being observed, and the observation is what keeps the suspension in place. A person on probation is not free. She is out on terms, and she knows exactly what the terms are even when nobody has ever written them down.

That is what a shelf has been for fifteen years. Put it back, and put it back, and be seen putting it back, and never draw anything down, because drawing something down is what a woman does whose terms have ended.

And they ended. Not are ending. Ended, at a point, by an act, and nobody has been observing your conduct since.

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.Romans 5:1

Read the tense. Have been justified. Have peace. Both of them finished and both of them present, and neither of them under review. You are standing in a peace that was concluded rather than granted provisionally, and Romans 5 is where those two tenses are written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a completed tense land on a woman standing in an aisle.

You were released outright and not conditionally, and Colossians 1 says He has now reconciled you in His body of flesh by His death in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before Him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who applies a word like blameless to somebody holding a coat she is about to put back.

Your thrift was never contemptible

Now something said carefully, because a paragraph like that could be turned into a way of making fifteen years look silly, and it is not silly.

Your daughter did not go without. That is a fact and it cost something and it is not canceled by one word of this article. There is a granddaughter who has never once had to be told that a thing is not possible, and there is a house that has run without drama through years that were not easy, and the reason for all of that is a woman who did without in a hundred small ways nobody ever saw.

The thrift was good. Most of it will stay, and it should.

What is being taken out is not the carefulness. It is the arrangement underneath it.

You were never buying your standing with a shelf, and Titus 3 says He saved us not because of works done by us in righteousness but according to His own mercy, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can lift a payment out from under a good habit and leave the habit standing. Nobody was ever running an account. There has been nothing to be behind on for fifteen years.

This is not a new rule

And one more, before the turn, because a woman like you will already be working out how to comply with this properly.

There is no new practice here. Nobody is asking you to buy something for yourself every week, or to keep a note of it, or to build a discipline of treating yourself that you will then keep with total consistency. You would be extremely good at that inside a month, and it would be the same probation with the terms rewritten.

One thing, once. That is all any of this is.

You are already clear and there is nothing to institute, and Romans 5 says we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes peace a thing a woman is standing in rather than a thing she is maintaining.

The breakthrough

So here is what is happening in this hall today, with somebody's cake going round and a plate in front of you that you did not make.

You are not being told to stop being careful, and nothing here says fifteen years was silly. You are being told that the terms ended in the year everything went wrong, that nobody has been observing your conduct since, and that a woman who cannot buy herself a coat is a woman who has never been told her probation is over.

You are not on probation and you never were, and Romans 5 says since we have been justified by faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes both of those verbs finished rather than pending. There is no balance running. There has not been one for fifteen years.

You are presented holy and blameless and above reproach right now, as you read this, and Colossians 1 is where those three words are written in a row, and the Spirit is what makes them a description rather than a target. Take the thing off the shelf. Not as a discipline. As a fact about whose daughter you are.

And if this goes deeper than a shelf, if you are not sleeping, or the year everything went wrong is pressing on you in ways you have never told anybody, please bring a real person in: a counselor, your doctor, a pastor. If you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, today. That is not weak faith. That is a sensible woman getting hands on it, and God is not disappointed in you for needing them.

Declare this over yourself

Say these in the car with the bag beside you. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says this authority came as a gift and not as a return on fifteen years of doing without. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not the volume. And whatever He does next, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why these get said today.

  1. Rule that I do not get things, you are ended in the name of Jesus. It is written that since we have been justified by faith we have peace with God, and both of those are finished and neither of them is under review.
  2. Arrangement I have kept in every aisle, get out of this hall. Scripture says He saved us not because of works done by us in righteousness but according to His own mercy, and my daughter still never went without and that was never a payment.
  3. Lord, You settled it in the year everything went wrong and nothing has come loose since. It is written that You present me holy and blameless and above reproach, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit is walking me out of a shop with a bag, and I am not putting this one back.
