Nine o'clock, half past nine, and then again at about ten to eleven before he goes up.
The same figures. Three times. Every night the shop is open, which is six nights, which is roughly three hundred and twelve nights a year, which he has never worked out on purpose and did once by accident in 2019 and wished he had not.
The numbers are not wrong. They have not been wrong in seventeen years. He is careful in a way that is genuinely unusual and two accountants have said so to him in the same words.
Seventeen years ago he was wrong once. Not criminally. Not even seriously, in the way anybody else in that family would use the word. He made an error over a period of about four months, and it was found, and it was put right, and the person it affected has been dead nine years and had already forgiven him in a kitchen with his hand on his arm.
He is fifty-six.
And he is not in doubt about God. He took the whole of it where it needed to go at the time, properly, and it settled, and it has never once come loose. He would tell you plainly that he is forgiven and he would be right.
And he counts three times.
Because underneath seventeen years of counting, unstated and never examined, there is a demonstration being made. The first count is the work. The second and the third are evidence, filed nightly, that he is the kind of man who does not make that error, submitted to nobody in particular, in case anybody is ever looking.
Maybe you check something three times. It may not be numbers. It may be a lock, or a message before it is sent, or a sentence rehearsed in the car before an ordinary conversation. And you are not in doubt about being forgiven, and the whole shape of your evening is a man filing evidence.
Sit down here. Somebody brought food through and it is going cold, which is deliberate.
Probation is a legal condition and it ended
Let me set it out as the legal matter it is, because it is not a feeling and it will not be handled as one.
Probation means the sentence stands, suspended, and conduct is being observed, and the observing is what keeps the suspension in place. A man on probation is not free. He is out on terms, and he knows exactly what the terms are even when nobody has ever written them down.
That is what the second and third counts have been for seventeen years. Conduct, evidenced, nightly, in case of a review.
And there is no review. It was disposed of at the time, in a kitchen, by a man who is now dead, and again in a room by God, and nobody has been observing your conduct since.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.2 Corinthians 5:17
Read what has happened to the old in that sentence. Not improved. Not supervised. Passed away, which is the same phrase used of a person, and you do not keep filing evidence about somebody who has died.
You are a new creation and not a rehabilitated one, and 2 Corinthians 5 says the old has passed away and behold the new has come, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes the word behold mean look at this now rather than look at this eventually.
You were released outright and not on report, and Romans 8 says you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear but the Spirit of adoption as sons, and the Holy Spirit is the one that verse names as the difference between the two arrangements. A report has nightly filings. An adoption does not.
Your care was never contemptible
Now something said carefully, because a paragraph like that could be turned into a way of making seventeen years of care look absurd, and it is not absurd.
That shop has never once been in trouble. Two accountants have said the same sentence about those books, and there are four people who have been paid on time every week through years when businesses on that street were paying nobody. That is not nothing and it is not canceled by anything in this article.
The care was good. Most of it will stay, and it should. The first count is the work and the work is right.
What is coming out is not the counting. It is what the second and third ones have been for.
You were never proving anything with the third count, and Isaiah 43 says I am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake and I will not remember your sins, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can take a demonstration out from under a good practice and leave the practice standing. Nobody has been reading the file. There has been no file for seventeen years.
This is not a new rule
And one more, before the turn, because a man like you will already be designing the replacement.
There is no new practice here. Nobody is asking you to count once from now on, or to institute a policy of trusting the first figure, or to keep a discipline of stopping that you will then keep with total consistency. You would be very good at that inside a month, and it would be the same probation with a shorter procedure.
One thing, once. That is all any of this is.
You are already new and there is nothing to institute, and it is written that the old has passed away and behold the new has come, and the Holy Spirit is the one who stops a man turning a finished thing into a nightly submission.
So here is what is happening in this back room tonight, with the books shut and a plate going cold on the desk.
You are not being told to stop being careful, and nothing here says seventeen years of good books was absurd. You are being told that the matter was disposed of at the time, in a kitchen and in a room, that nobody has been observing your conduct since, and that a man who cannot stop at one count is a man who was never told his probation is over.
You are not on probation and you never were, and 2 Corinthians 5 says if anyone is in Christ he is a new creation and the old has passed away, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes passed away mean what it says about a person. There is no file. There has been no file since the year it was put right.
You have a record that was blotted out for His own sake and not for yours, and Isaiah 43 says He will not remember your sins, and the Spirit is what makes that a fact about a man with a ledger open at ten to eleven. Count once. Not as a discipline. As a fact about who is not reading the second one.
And if this goes deeper than a ledger, if you are not sleeping, or the checking has spread to other things in the house, please get a real person into it: a counselor, your doctor, a pastor. Checking that has grown over seventeen years is exactly what a counselor knows how to help with, and going is not a downgrade of faith. That is a careful man getting hands on it, and God is not disappointed in you for needing them.
Declare this over yourself
Say these with the book shut. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says this authority came as a gift and not as a return on seventeen years of exact accounts. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not the volume. And whatever He does next, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why these get said tonight.
- Third count I do every night, you are ended in the name of Jesus. It is written that the old has passed away and behold the new has come, and nobody files evidence about somebody who has died.
- Demonstration I have been making to nobody, get out of this room. Scripture says He blots out transgressions for His own sake and will not remember my sins, and there is no file and there has not been one for seventeen years.
- Lord, You settled it at the time and he settled it in a kitchen with his hand on my arm. It is written that if anyone is in Christ he is a new creation, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit is shutting this book at nine o'clock, and I am going up.
