The Bar Nobody Set but Me

This message is for the woman who holds herself to a standard she invented at nineteen, which is nowhere in Scripture, and has failed it daily for thirty years and called that failure sin

She wrote it down when she was nineteen. In a notebook. She still has the notebook.

It is not a bad list and it was not written by a bad person. It was written by a serious young woman at a conference in a hot room who had been moved, genuinely, and who wanted her life to mean something, and who did what serious young people do, which is to turn a feeling into a specification.

There are about eleven items. Some of them are ordinary. Two of them are the ones that matter, and those two are not in the Bible. Not paraphrased from it, not derived from it. They came out of her, at nineteen, in a hot room, and she has measured herself against them every day for thirty-one years and she has never once met them, because they cannot be met, because they were not designed by anybody who understood how a life works.

And she calls that failure sin. Every day. She has confessed it more times than she can count.

She is fifty. She has taught in that church for years and she teaches grace well and she means it. If you sat under her you would come away helped and correct.

And people say the sentence to her. You have to forgive yourself. Her husband. A woman she trusts. And every time, the same thing happens in her, which she has never told anybody: she does not know what is being asked, and she is also aware, dimly, that whatever it is, it would not touch the actual problem, because tomorrow the bar will still be there and she will still be under it.

Maybe you have a list. Maybe you wrote it at nineteen or twenty-four or thirty. And maybe somebody has told you to forgive yourself for failing it, and you nodded and went home and knew, somewhere, that they had not understood the shape of the thing at all.

Sit down here at the end of the table. Nothing coming is going to hand you a procedure.

Two things are going on, and only one of them is real

Let me separate them, because they have been tangled for thirty-one years and once they come apart most of the weight goes.

The first thing is what people are asking you to do, and there is no such act. Nowhere in Scripture does a person forgive herself. Nobody in the book does it, nobody is told to do it, and the phrase is not in there. It arrived in ordinary speech within living memory. You have not been failing at anything, and Scripture never once puts a second forgiveness between a woman and her rest, and it is the Holy Spirit who has kept you unable to complete a transaction that does not exist.

The second thing is the real one and nobody has named it for you, so let me.

The failure is not a failure to keep God's law. It is a failure to keep hers.

Two of those eleven items came out of a nineteen year old at a conference. They are not commandments. They were never given, never spoken, never written by anybody with the authority to bind a conscience. And a standard with no author cannot be repented of, because there is nothing to repent to. That is why thirty-one years of confessing it has not moved it one inch. The confessions were addressed to a court that never issued the law.

I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.Galatians 2:21

You are being handed the sharpest sentence in the New Testament about this, and Galatians 2 is where it is written, and it is His Spirit who applies it and not your handwriting. Paul is not talking about a bad law. He is talking about a good one, the actual law of God, and he says that even that one cannot make anybody righteous, and that treating it as though it could empties the cross. If the real law cannot do it, a list from a hot room certainly cannot.

What thirty-one years has been

So what has been happening? Something real, and it has a name, and the name is not sin.

A private law has been in force.

Enacted at nineteen, by one person, in a notebook. Enforced daily ever since by that same person, who is also the only citizen of the jurisdiction it covers. There is no appeal, because there is no higher court in that system. And the penalty is applied every day at the same hour, and it has been applied about eleven thousand times, and the law has never once been reviewed, because the person who could repeal it has spent thirty-one years assuming God wrote it.

He did not write it. That is the whole article in five words.

You were never under that law for one day of your life, and Romans 6 says you are not under law but under grace, and it is the Spirit who tells a woman which statutes actually apply to her.

Not a step to add, a law to repeal

Here is the turn, and it takes something down rather than putting something up.

The problem was never a second forgiveness left unobtained. The problem is a first thing that was never yours to do: enforcing a statute God never enacted, and then confessing your failure to keep it as though the failure were sin. It was not sin. It was arithmetic. An impossible standard produces failure the way a wall produces a shadow.

Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls.Romans 14:4

So the move is not to forgive yourself. The move is to say out loud that you are not the judge in this, and then to say who is. That is the whole of it. It is not a technique and there is nothing to get right, and it will not feel like an achievement. It is a woman repealing a law she had no business passing.

You have a righteousness that came as a gift and not as a compliance record, and it is written that if righteousness were through the law then Christ died for no purpose, and the Spirit is what makes that a fact about a woman with a notebook from a hot room.

The breakthrough

So here is what is happening in this hall today, with the tables going out and somebody calling for more plates.

There will be no forgiving yourself here, because there is no such act and there never was, and thirty-one years of not managing it was never a failure. Instead, the actual thing, which is smaller and much harder and takes about eight seconds.

You are going to say out loud that you are not the judge in this. Then you are going to say out loud who is.

You are standing under a righteousness that was given and not achieved, and Romans 8 says there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and the Holy Spirit is the one who applies a gift and not a compliance record. Those two items are not God's law and never were, and He has never once held you to them, and He is not going to start.

You have been confessing failures that were never sins, and it is written that if righteousness were through the law then Christ died for no purpose, and the Spirit is what makes that true about a woman who has kept a notebook for thirty-one years. Take the bar down. Not as an achievement. As a matter of who writes law.

And do the ordinary things too. Say all of it out loud to one real person this week, in daylight: your husband, or the woman you trust, or a counselor, because thirty-one years of a private jurisdiction is thirty-one years without an outside voice. If this has gone heavier than a list, if you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, today. That is not weak faith in a woman who teaches grace. That is taking her own teaching, and God is not disappointed in you for needing hands.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with the notebook shut. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says this authority came as a gift and not as a score on a list. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not how released you feel, and you may feel nothing at all. And whatever He does next, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why these get said today.

  1. Bar I put up at nineteen, you are coming down in the name of Jesus. It is written that if righteousness were through the law then Christ died for no purpose, and you were never even law, you were handwriting in a hot room.
  2. Habit of confessing arithmetic as sin, get out of this hall. Scripture says we are not under law but under grace, and an impossible standard produces failure the way a wall produces a shadow.
  3. Lord, You are the judge and I am not, and I have been enforcing a statute in Your name that You never wrote. It is written that I do not nullify the grace of God, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit is walking me out of a jurisdiction of one, and the girl at that conference is Yours and she always was.
