It was two pages and she signed the second one at the bottom on the right, in a small office, in November, with a woman she had met twenty minutes earlier being very kind to her.
Eleven years ago.
Everything about that decision was right and everybody has told her so. Her brother, who was four hundred miles away and had an opinion anyway, eventually told her so. The doctor told her so before she asked. Her own mother, on one of the good days about a year later, patted her hand and said something that anybody listening would have understood as absolution.
And the pen was in her hand. That is the piece that has never gone anywhere. Other people had opinions and one person signed, and that person was her.
She is seventy-two now. She is not a woman given to brooding, and if you met her at that table you would think she had made her peace with most things, which is largely true. There is exactly one file she has kept open.
And here is what people say to her. You have to let yourself off. Forgive yourself. Her daughter says it. A woman at church said it twice this year with real warmth. Everybody says it the way you would say wash your hands, as though it were a plain small action that anybody could perform, and she has never once known what they were describing.
She knows what it is to be forgiven by God. That is not the missing part. She settled all of that on her knees a long time ago and it has stayed settled.
What she cannot find is the second desk. Where is it. What does a person do there. And how does she know when it is done, given that the pen was in her hand and always will have been.
Maybe somebody has told you to let yourself off. And maybe you nodded and went home and had no earthly idea what you were supposed to actually do about it, and then quietly filed the not knowing as one more thing against yourself.
Sit down here with the coffee. Nothing coming is going to hand you a procedure.
There is no second desk
Let me say the plain thing, the way my grandmother would have, and it may take you a day to work out whether it is a relief or an offense.
There is no such desk.
Not hidden, not hard to reach, not something you have failed to get to. It does not exist. Nowhere in the whole of Scripture does a person forgive herself. Nobody does it, nobody is told to, and the phrase is not in the book. It came into our ordinary speech within living memory, and it is nearly always said by people trying to name something true, and the thing they are pointing at is real, but it is not a second pardon.
You have not failed at anything, and Scripture never once puts a second forgiveness between a woman and her rest, and it is the Holy Spirit who has kept you unable to find a desk nobody ever put in a room. Eleven years of not completing an impossible errand is not a fault in you. That is the correct result.
As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear Him. For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust.Psalm 103:13-14
Read what He knows. Not what you decided. What you are made of. That verse is about a God who takes into account the whole condition of a person making a decision in a small office in November with somebody being kind to her. You were fully accounted for at the moment the pen was in your hand, and Psalm 103 is where that is written, and it is His Spirit and not your own review who does the accounting.
What eleven years has actually been
So if the desk does not exist, what have eleven years been? Something real, and it has a name, and the name is not forgiveness.
A court has been kept.
It sits in that kitchen. There is a bench and you sit on it. There is a defendant and it is also you. There is a prosecutor who has the whole file, who can tell you the room, the month, the exact place on the page, and who never once mentions the doctor or the four hundred miles, and he is you as well. There is no defense, because whenever one is raised you rule it out as making excuses. And no verdict has ever come, because a court with no jurisdiction cannot hand one down. It can only sit again.
That is what eleven years has been. Not an unfinished forgiveness. A trial that cannot end, in a room with no authority in it.
You were never appointed to that bench, and 1 Corinthians 4 says Paul would not judge even himself but left it to the Lord, and it is the Spirit who lifts a woman out of a chair she was never qualified to sit in. If Paul got out of that seat, it was never built for a daughter with a pen.
Not a step to add, a bench to get off
Here is the turn, and it is a taking away and not an adding.
The problem was never a second thing left undone. It is a first thing that was never yours to do: holding a case God has already closed. And a woman cannot close a case she was never authorized to open. What she can do is get up and go.
So the move is not to forgive yourself. The move is to say out loud that you are not the judge in this, and then to say who is. That is the whole of it. There is no technique in it, no wording to get right, and it will not feel like an accomplishment. It is a woman getting off a bench and walking out of a room that was never a courtroom.
You have a case that was closed by the only judge with standing in it, and it is written that there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and the Spirit is what makes that a fact about a woman who signed the second page.
So here is what is happening at this table this afternoon, with the door propped open and the pie on the sill.
There will be no forgiving yourself here, because there is no such act and there never has been, and eleven years of not managing it was never a failure. Instead, the actual thing, which is smaller and harder and takes about eight seconds.
You are going to say out loud that you are not the judge in this. And then you are going to say out loud who is.
You are standing under a verdict entered a long time ago by the only court with jurisdiction, and Romans 8 says there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and the Holy Spirit is the one who applies a ruling and not a review of a signature. That November is God's to weigh and it was never yours, and He weighed it already, and He did not hand the file back to you afterward.
You have been holding what He released, and it is written that as far as the east is from the west so far has He removed our transgressions, and the Spirit is what makes that true about a woman with a pen in her hand in a small office. Put it down. Not as an achievement. As a matter of who the judge is.
And do the ordinary things too. Say all of it out loud to one real person this week, in daylight: your daughter, or a counselor, or that woman at church who has said the sentence twice and clearly loves you. Eleven years alone with a prosecutor is eleven years hearing one side. If this has gone heavier than a memory, if you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, today. That is not weak faith at seventy-two. That is good sense, and God is not disappointed in you for wanting a hand.
Declare this over yourself
Say these standing in your own kitchen. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says this authority came as a gift and not as a reward for having got a hard decision right. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not how let off you feel afterward, and you may feel nothing at all. And whatever He does next, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why these get said today.
- Court I have kept in my own kitchen, you are adjourned in the name of Jesus. It is written that it is before his own master that a servant stands or falls, and eleven years of sitting has not given you a single hour of jurisdiction.
- Prosecutor who never mentions the doctor, get out of this house. Scripture says He knows our frame and remembers that we are dust, and the whole condition of the woman signing that page was on the record before the ink was dry.
- Lord, You are the judge and I am not, and I have been sitting in Your chair since that November. It is written that as a father shows compassion to his children so You show compassion to us, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit is walking me out of a room I was never appointed to, and the paper I signed is Yours and it is already weighed.
