She was nineteen when it started and twenty-one when it stopped, and the word she cannot get past is willfully.
Not because it is a hard word. Because it is an accurate one. She has spent three years trying to find a reading of those two years that does not include it, and every honest attempt has come back with the same answer: she knew. She was not confused, she was not deceived, she had been raised knowing, and she went ahead anyway, every single time, for about two years.
Then, last spring, she found this.
For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins.
She read it on a laptop at eleven at night in a room with a candle going and her roommates asleep, and she has not really put it down since.
She has told nobody. Not the two women in the next room who love her and who she tells everything to. Not the leader of the group she is in, who is twenty-nine and kind. Not her mother, obviously. Because to say it out loud she would have to say what she did, and she has decided, without ever quite deciding, that those two things come as a set.
Maybe you have that verse. You might be forty-nine instead of twenty-four. But there is a sentence that found you at the wrong hour, and it names the exact thing you were most afraid was true, and it has been reading you ever since instead of the other way around.
Sit down here on the rug. I am not going to tell you the fear is silly, and I am not going to hand you a verdict.
The word that is actually doing the work
Let me handle the sentence carefully, because at eleven at night on a laptop nobody handled it carefully for you.
The verb in that passage is a continuous one. It is not if we sinned deliberately. It is if we go on sinning deliberately, which in the original is an ongoing, settled, present-tense state, and the whole letter of Hebrews is written to people who were being pressured to walk away from Christ entirely and go back to a sacrificial system they had come out of. That is the actual situation on the page: not a young woman who did something for two years and stopped and is now frightened, but a community deciding, deliberately and permanently, that they wanted the old sacrifices instead of the one that had already been made.
That is why the sentence says there no longer remains a sacrifice. Not because the sacrifice has been used up. Because a person who has finally and settledly walked away from the only sacrifice there is has nowhere else to go. There is no other one to switch to. It is a statement about the exclusivity of Christ, not about a quota.
You have not run out of anything, and Hebrews 10 says that by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified, which is written four verses before the one that frightened you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept you circling that chapter until somebody showed you the sentence in front of it.
For by a single offering He has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.Hebrews 10:14
Read what that verse does with time. One offering. All time. And then those who are being sanctified, which is present and ongoing and unfinished, which is a description of a person still in the middle of it. You are exactly the person that sentence is written about, and it is written down in the same chapter as the one you have been reading alone, and it is His Spirit and not your record who does the perfecting.
Knowing better was never the disqualifier
Now the specific shape of your fear, because it deserves a specific answer rather than a general reassurance.
The thing eating you is not what happened. It is that you knew. And out of that a private doctrine has been built, in which knowledge is what raises an ordinary failure into an unforgivable one.
But look at who the Bible keeps forgiving. David knew exactly what he was doing and he was the king and he had the law and he did it anyway, and he wrote Psalm 51 afterward and it is in the book. Peter knew, and had been warned personally, by name, hours earlier, and did it three times, and was restored over breakfast on a beach. The Bible is not shy about deliberateness. It puts it in writing and then forgives it in writing.
You were never being charged extra for having been raised knowing, and Psalm 51 is in the book precisely so a person who knew better would have words, and the Spirit is the one who preserved a king's worst week for three thousand years so a twenty-four year old would not have to invent her own vocabulary.
Nobody is asking you to explain what you did
And here is the thing that has kept your mouth shut, so let me take it off the table.
Saying this out loud to somebody does not require you to say what happened. Those two are not a set, however tightly they feel bonded at eleven at night. You can say to a person, in daylight, I am afraid I have used up the sacrifice, and stop there, and any decent person will not ask you what you did, and if they do ask you are allowed to say that is not what I am here about.
You are allowed to bring the fear without the file, and Psalm 62 says pour out your heart before Him for God is a refuge for us, and it is His Spirit and not a full disclosure that carries a sentence like that.
Say it to somebody this week. The leader who is twenty-nine and kind, or a counselor, or one of the two women in the next room. A fear this size is structurally unresolvable alone, because the only instrument in that room at eleven at night is the same mind that is producing the fear.
So here is what is happening in this room tonight, with the candle going and the two of them asleep on the other side of the wall.
Two things, and the order is the whole point.
First, say the fear out loud to God, plainly, without the case attached. Just: I am afraid I used up the sacrifice. You have the freedom to say that to Him and it is not held against you, and it is written that He is a refuge for us, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a sentence like that the whole way in.
Second, and only second, say one true thing about His character out loud. About Him, not about yourself, not about the verse. That He is patient, that He is honest, that He keeps His word. One thing, and then stop. This is yours tonight: a fear that has been said and a truth that has been said, and neither of them a ruling on you. It is written that by a single offering He has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified, and the Spirit who kept you at that chapter did it to bring you in.
Then, this week, in daylight, say it to a person. And if it has gone darker than this, if you are not sleeping or you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, tonight. That is not weak faith and it is not a step backward. That is a person getting hands on a weight that is too heavy to carry alone, and God is not disappointed in you for it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these on the rug with the laptop closed. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says this authority came as a gift and not as a reward for a clean two years. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not the confidence in your voice, and there may be none. And whatever He does next, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why a frightened twenty-four year old can speak them honestly.
- Fear that I used up the sacrifice, you are not the verdict on me, in the name of Jesus. It is written that by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified, and being sanctified is a present tense and I am standing in it.
- Doctrine I built at eleven at night, get out of this apartment. Scripture kept a king's worst week in the book for three thousand years, and it kept a man who was warned by name and did it three times and had breakfast on a beach afterward.
- Lord, You were there for all of it and You have been in this room every night since last spring. It is written that You do not break a bruised reed, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit has kept me circling that chapter until I read the verse in front of it, and I am saying this out loud to a real person this week.
