No Place for Repentance

He reads early, before the house is up, and he has read the same eleven words at least a thousand times in nine years.

He found no place for repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.

That is Esau. That is a man in a chapter about a birthright sold for a bowl of food, and the writer of Hebrews holds him up as a warning, and there is a line at the end of the account that this man has never been able to get out from under. Esau wanted it back. He asked. He cried. And the door was shut.

He is fifty-three. There was a stretch in his thirties, about four years of it, and he has never once said out loud to a living person what happened in it. What he will tell you, if you ask him about anything else, is anything else. He is easy company. He has a truck and a boat and three grown kids who like him.

And every morning before the house is up he reads that line and understands it as an obituary. Not a warning. A record of a thing that has already occurred, in his case, some time in his thirties, without an announcement, and the fact that he still reads and still prays and still goes is not evidence to the contrary. It is just the tears. Esau had those too.

He has told nobody. Not his wife. Not his brother. Not the pastor of thirteen years who has been to his house for dinner. Because the whole terror of it is that if it is already settled then saying it out loud does not change anything and only makes other people carry a thing they cannot fix.

Maybe you have that line. It may not be Esau. But there is a sentence that found you and you have been reading it as a record instead of a warning, and there is a difference between those two and nobody has sat down and shown you what it is.

Sit on the tailgate a minute. I am not going to tell you the fear is silly and I am not going to hand you a verdict.

What Esau was actually looking for

Let me handle the account carefully, because a man who has read eleven words a thousand times deserves better than a slogan.

Go back to the story in Genesis, because Hebrews is summarizing it and the summary assumes you know it. Esau sold a birthright for a meal because he did not care about it, and years later his father gave the blessing to his brother, and Esau came in from hunting and found the blessing gone. And what he wept for, in that scene, in the tent, was the blessing. The inheritance. The land and the herds and the position.

He was not on his knees asking God to change his heart. He was asking his father to reverse an outcome that had already gone somewhere else.

The word there is about a change of mind, a reversal, and the sentence is about Isaac. It is a blessing that could not be un-given, and a man weeping over consequences rather than over sin. You have been reading that as a locked door on forgiveness, and Scripture is describing a consequence that could not be reversed, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept you at that chapter for nine years because He is not willing for you to keep the wrong reading.

And look at what the same letter says two chapters earlier, in the same argument, to the same readers:

Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience.Hebrews 10:22

You are invited to draw near in full assurance in the very letter that has frightened you for nine years, and that invitation is written down in it, and it is His Spirit and not your history who does the sprinkling clean.

A shut door does not get knocked on

Now the thing that is true about the last nine years. It is his own evidence and he has never once counted it.

That line has been read a thousand times. He gets up before the house does. He still prays. He still goes. Nine years of a man doing all of that under what he believes is a settled sentence against him.

Nobody does that. A man who has genuinely stopped caring does not read a chapter about caring at half past five in the morning for nine years. Esau went off and built a life and became a nation and there is no record of him ever going back to it.

You were kept knocking through every one of those nine years, and it is written that whoever comes to Him He will never cast out, and the Spirit is the one who has had your hand on that door the whole time. The wanting is not the tears of a man who lost a herd. The wanting is the work of God in a man, and it does not get planted in ground that has been written off.

The reason it has to leave your head

Here is the most practical thing in this article, and I want it said before the breakthrough and not after it.

A fear like this cannot be settled alone, and not because you lack faith. It is structural. At half past five in the morning the only instrument in the room is the same mind producing the fear, and a mind will always find the evidence it went out looking for. Nine years of solitary reading has not resolved it and nine more will not.

So it has to be spoken. To God first, and then to a person with a face, in daylight, this week. Your pastor has been to your house for dinner and he can carry this, and he has almost certainly heard it before, because far more people carry this exact fear than ever say so out loud. A counselor is a good idea too, particularly if those four years are still living in your body.

You have the freedom to need somebody else in the room, and Galatians 6 says bear one another's burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ, and it is the Holy Spirit who put a plural into a verse about carrying weight.
