Into the Hands of the Living God

He wrote it on an index card in 2015 and it is still in the front of the book, and the ink has gone brown at the edges.

It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

He is a careful man. He has read that chapter more times than he has read any other page of anything. He can tell you where the quotation comes from, which is Deuteronomy, and he can tell you the structure of the surrounding argument, and none of that has helped him for eleven years, because underneath all the structure sits one settled personal conviction: that sentence is about him, it is a threat, and it is coming.

There is a reason it landed on him and it is not complicated. It arrived in a hard year. He read the chapter in a week when he had already decided something about himself, and a sentence read in that condition does not get evaluated, it gets adopted.

He has told nobody. Not his wife, who is in the next room most evenings. Not his oldest friend, who he has known since they were students and who would sit with this for as long as it took. Not the two men in his study group who ask him things. Because he is the one who explains passages, and a man in that position discovers, usually late, that there is nobody left to bring a passage to.

Maybe you have that card. It might not be Hebrews 10. But a sentence found you in a bad year and got adopted rather than evaluated, and it has been sitting in the front of the book ever since, going brown at the edges.

Sit down. I am not going to tell you the fear is unfounded, and I am not going to hand you a verdict.

Who the sentence is spoken to, and about

Let me do the work properly, because you would spot a shortcut immediately.

That sentence is the last line of a paragraph, and the paragraph is about people who go on deliberately in the face of the sacrifice, who have, as the writer puts it, spurned the Son of God and profaned the blood of the covenant and outraged the Spirit of grace. That is three verbs of active contempt. It is a portrait of a settled campaign against Christ by people who once stood inside the covenant and turned to fight it.

And now look at the passage the quotation comes from, because you know it comes from Deuteronomy 32 and you have never once let yourself read the end of that song. It is a song about God judging His enemies and then, in the same breath, vindicating His people. The line the writer quotes lands on the enemies. The next line is that the Lord will vindicate His people and have compassion on His servants.

You have been carrying one clause of a song whose whole ending is compassion on His servants, and that ending is written in the chapter the quotation was cut from, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept you at this passage for eleven years because He will not let a careful man keep a careless reading.

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.Hebrews 10:23

That is in the same chapter, six verses before. The writer's own conclusion about his own argument. You are addressed by the same author in the same chapter as somebody holding a confession, not as somebody being warned off one, and it is His Spirit and not your reading history who decides which sentence has your name on it.

Whose hands they are

Now the phrase itself, and this is the part I want you to sit with, because it is the whole thing.

The hands of the living God. Read it slowly. It does not say the jaws, or the court, or the balance. It says the hands.

And you already know, better than most men alive, everything else Scripture says about those hands. They are the hands that made a man out of dust and breathed into him. They are the hands David says he is held by when he goes up or lies down. They are the hands Jesus says nobody can snatch anybody out of. They are the hands that were opened with nails and did not close.

That sentence in Hebrews is fearful for a man in open contempt of the One whose hands they are. For a man who has been in those hands the whole eleven years and did not know what to call it, it is not a threat. It is a location.

You were already in the hands of the living God the entire time you were afraid of falling into them, and John 10 says nobody is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand, and the Spirit is the one who has kept you there without your cooperation or your knowledge.

The condition you were in when it landed

One more, and it is a pastoral point rather than an exegetical one, and I say it as a man who also reads for a living.

A sentence read in a bad year is not read. It is received. In that condition the mind is not evaluating a text, it is looking for language for something it has already concluded, and it will take the first sentence that fits and treat the fit as revelation.

Eleven years of study since then has not dislodged it, and you have quietly taken that as evidence that the reading is sound. It is not evidence. All eleven years show is that a conviction adopted in that state cannot be argued out by the same mind that adopted it. That is not a failure of your scholarship. That is the nature of the thing.

You were never going to get out of this by reading harder, and it is written that where two or three are gathered He is among them, and the Holy Spirit put that promise in the plural on purpose.

Which is why the practical instruction in this article is a person and not a commentary. Say this out loud to your oldest friend, or to a pastor, or to a counselor, in daylight, this week. Not another translation. A face.
