It happens about four rows before it reaches her, and she has never once been able to stop it.
The ushers start at the front. She can hear the movement, the small shuffle of a row passing something along, and her stomach drops the way it does on a hard brake. Then the plate arrives and she puts in what she was always going to put in, and it goes down the row, and about ninety seconds later she is fine.
Twenty-two years ago she did something with money that she is not going to describe and nobody has the right to ask about. Nineteen years ago she made it right. Fully. Not a gesture, not a partial thing. She went to the person, she paid what was owed with interest she calculated herself, and it was received and it was closed, and the person shook her hand.
And every Sunday since, four rows out, her stomach still drops.
She is fifty-three. She has served on the finance team of that church, which she volunteered for on purpose, which is either the healthiest thing she has ever done or the least, and she has never quite decided which.
She has told nobody. Not her husband, who was there for the paying back. Not the friend she sits with. Not the pastor. Because the thing was settled with a person and with God and there is genuinely nothing outstanding, and a woman cannot go around raising a matter that has been closed for nineteen years without it sounding as though she wants to be talked out of something.
Now here is the part that has done the real damage. Somewhere in nineteen years of the same drop, she stopped calling it a habit and started reading it as information. If it is closed, this would not happen. So one of two things is true: either God has not actually let it go, or she never really received the thing she thinks she received.
Maybe you have a plate. It might be a plate, or a bank statement, or a certain aisle in a certain shop. Something reaches for you in the same spot every time and it has been reaching for years, and you have quietly upgraded it from a feeling to a finding.
Sit down out here in the foyer with the coffee. Nothing here is going to tell you the drop is nothing.
A stomach is not a ledger
Let me put the distinction plainly, because everything in this piece stands on it.
There is what is legally true about a woman and there is what her body does. Two registers. They are entirely capable of disagreeing for nineteen years without either one moving the other. The account was closed in a court and closed again in a living room with a handshake. The drop happens in a stomach. A stomach does not keep books.
I have blotted out your transgressions like a cloud and your sins like mist; return to Me, for I have redeemed you.Isaiah 44:22
Look at what He chose to compare it to. Not a debt written off in a ledger, where the entry stays visible with a line through it. A cloud. Mist. Something that was there and is now simply not there, and you could not go and find the place where it used to be if you tried.
You are standing on something that has been blotted out like mist off a field, and Isaiah 44 is where God says it in His own voice, and it is the Holy Spirit who reports on where a thing went and not the four rows in front of you.
And now notice what that verse does not do. It does not say your body will stop reacting on a Sunday. Scripture is thunderously clear about the removal and completely silent about the timetable for what a nervous system does afterward. You have been holding God to a promise that is not written anywhere, and the promise He made is about the transgressions and not about your stomach, and His Spirit is the one who keeps a woman reading the actual sentence.
Nineteen years is a groove, not a bill
Now the reasoning, because a woman on a finance team will do better with an explanation than with reassurance.
The argument goes: if it were closed, this would not still happen. That sounds like sense and it is not, and here is why. A body does not run on the state of an account. A body runs on what it has rehearsed. Nineteen years of the same room, the same sound of a row passing something along, the same physical object arriving from the same direction at the same point in a service. That is a thousand repetitions of one stimulus. It would be strange if there were no response.
Nothing is being billed on a Sunday. A path is being taken because the path is there. It is why a certain song can put a woman back in a car she sold in 2004. There is no message in it.
And there is a practical thing sitting under this. A physical response that reliable, arriving on cue, is worth mentioning to a doctor or a counselor, and doing that is not a downgrade of faith. A body affects a soul and always has, and the woman who checks the wiring is the wiser one.
You are not being invoiced when the plate comes round, and Psalm 103 says He does not deal with us according to our sins nor repay us according to our iniquities, and it is His Spirit who tells the truth about your standing and not your midsection.
I am not promising you the drop stops
Here is the honest part, and I am not going to do what somebody probably did once with the best of intentions.
I am not telling you it will be gone by Easter. I do not know that, and neither does anybody who says it. For some people the reaction thins out within a year of getting the reading straight. For some it stays, lighter, for a long time. There is no timetable in Scripture and I am not inventing one so this article lands more cleanly than the truth does.
What I will tell you is that the drop was never what made the pardon real, so it has never once been in a position to unmake it. You were cleared by a finished act and not by a settled stomach, and Hebrews 10 says by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified, and the Spirit is what holds that up on a Sunday when your body votes the other way.
And here is what you are allowed to do, and I doubt anybody has offered it. You are allowed to say the true thing out loud in the middle of the drop. That is not pretending. Pretending would be telling your friend you never think about it. Saying the verdict while your stomach is doing what it does is the opposite of pretending: it is telling the truth about the account and the truth about the pew in the same breath.
So here is what is happening on Sunday, four rows out, when you hear the row in front start to move.
You are going to say the verdict out loud with your stomach dropping. Not after it settles. Not when the plate stops doing this. Right there in the pew, under your breath if you like, but out loud, with your mouth moving.
You are forgiven right now, as you read this, and Isaiah 44 says He has blotted out your transgressions like a cloud and your sins like mist, and the Holy Spirit is the one who applies a finished act and not a settled body. And expect the drop to arrive exactly on cue, because if you wait for your body to cooperate before you speak, you have handed the verdict to your stomach and given it a vote nobody ever issued it.
You have a standing that does not consult your midsection, and it is written that He does not repay us according to our iniquities, and the Spirit is what makes that a fact about a woman in the eleventh row. Nineteen years of Sundays has not amended it by one word.
And do the ordinary things too. Mention it to a doctor, because a response this reliable is worth somebody looking at. Say all of it out loud to one real person this week, in daylight, your husband or the friend you sit with or the pastor, because a thing carried privately for nineteen years grows in the private. If it has gone heavier than a drop, if you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, today. That is not weak faith. That is a sensible woman getting hands on it, and God is not disappointed in you for it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these at the table with the drop still in you. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says this authority came as a gift and not as a reward for nineteen years of good books. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not how settled you feel, and this afternoon you may feel nothing settled at all. And whatever He does next, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why these get said mid drop.
- Drop that arrives when the plate does, you are a feeling and not a finding, in the name of Jesus. It is written that He has blotted out my transgressions like a cloud and my sins like mist, and nobody has ever gone and found the place where a mist used to be.
- Reading that makes my stomach a ledger, get out of this house. Scripture says He does not repay us according to our iniquities, and a stomach has never once kept a set of books in any court that counts.
- Lord, You were in the living room the day I paid it back and You have been in the eleventh row every Sunday since. It is written that You have redeemed me, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit says mist and my body says something else, and I am going with You.
