There is a stretch of two lane about forty minutes north of where he lives, and at mile marker ninety-one his hands go tight on the wheel.
Not a flinch. Nothing dramatic. The knuckles come up and the shoulders come forward about an inch and his breathing changes, and it lasts maybe six seconds, and then he is through it and the road is just road again.
Fourteen years.
He knows what it is about. He is not going to tell you and I am not going to ask, and the thing itself is not the subject of this article. What matters is that he settled it. He took it where a man takes a thing like that, a long time ago, and he meant every word, and he has never once doubted the doctrine. If you got him talking he could lay it out for you clean and he would be right about all of it.
But he has driven that road maybe eight hundred times since, and eight hundred times his hands have said something his mouth would never say. And a man who works with his hands trusts his hands.
So somewhere in fourteen years an idea got built without a single word being spoken. If it were really settled, the hands would have stopped. Whatever the doctrine says, something out on that road has not signed off, and this is how he is being told.
He has never mentioned it. Not to his wife, who has been in the passenger seat for a fair share of those eight hundred passes and has never once seen it. Not to his brother. Not to the pastor he has known twenty years and liked all twenty. Because it sounds like nothing when you say it out loud, and it is not nothing, and he would rather carry it than have it made small in front of him.
Maybe you have a mile ninety-one. It could be a road or a doorway or a month on the calendar. Something reaches for you in the same spot every single time, and after enough years you stopped calling it a feeling and started reading it as a finding.
Pull over here on the gravel. There is nothing coming that will tell you the hands are nothing.
A body was never on the bench
Here is the distinction and everything else rests on it.
There is what is legally true about a man, and there is what his body does. Two different registers, and they are entirely capable of disagreeing for a decade without either one changing the other. A verdict gets handed down in a court. A grip happens in a set of forearms. Forearms have never sat on a bench in any court that matters.
As far as the east is from the west, so far does He remove our transgressions from us.Psalm 103:12
That is a measurement with no bottom in it. East and west never meet, no matter how far you go in either direction, and David picked that on purpose over north and south, which do meet at a pole. You are standing on a distance that cannot be closed by anything, and Psalm 103 is where it is written, and it is the Holy Spirit who reports on where a thing went and not a stretch of asphalt in the third county.
Now look at what that verse does not say. It does not say that as far as the east is from the west, so far will your hands relax on a Tuesday. It is a statement about where the transgressions went. Scripture is loud about the removal and quiet about the timetable for what a body does afterward. You have been holding God to a promise nobody ever wrote down, and what He did write down is about the transgressions and not about your grip, and His Spirit is the one who keeps a man reading the actual sentence.
Eight hundred passes is a groove, not a message
Now the reasoning, because a man deserves an answer and not a pat on the shoulder.
The argument goes: a settled thing would have stopped doing this. That sounds like plain sense and it is wrong, and here is why. A body does not run on legal facts. A body runs on what it has practiced. Eight hundred passes with the same curve, the same sign, the same light through the same trees, and a set of associations laid down deeper than anything a man decides on purpose.
Fourteen years of the same six seconds is not a notice being served. It is a groove being followed. It is the same reason a man who worked nights for a decade still wakes at two on his own vacation. Nothing is being communicated. A path is there and a body takes it.
And there is one practical thing in this that nobody may have said. A reaction that reliable and that physical is worth mentioning to a doctor or a counselor, and that is not an unspiritual move. A body affects a soul and always has, and a man who checks the wiring is not a man of small faith. He is a man who checks the wiring.
You are not being informed at mile ninety-one, and Isaiah 43 says He blots out transgressions for His own sake and will not remember them, and it is His Spirit who tells the truth about your standing and not the muscles in your arms.
I am not going to promise the grip stops
Now the honest part, and I will not do to you what somebody probably did once with good intentions.
I do not know that the hands will loosen. Nobody does. Some men find that once the reading changes, the reaction thins out over a year or two. Some carry it a long time. There is no timetable in Scripture, and I am not making one up so this piece ends tidier than the truth.
What I do know is that the feeling was never what made the pardon real, so it has never been in a position to unmake it. You were cleared by a finished act and not by a settled nervous system, and Hebrews 10 says by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified, and the Spirit is what keeps that standing on a morning when your forearms disagree.
And here is what a man is allowed to do, and I do not think anybody has offered it to you. You are allowed to say the true thing out loud with your knuckles white. That is not pretending. Pretending is telling people you are fine. Saying the verdict while the grip is on you is the opposite of pretending: it is telling the truth about the court and the truth about the road at the same time.
So here is what is happening the next time you come up on that sign.
You are going to say the verdict out loud with your hands tight. Not after they loosen. Not once the road stops doing this. At ninety-one, at speed, out loud in the cab, in whatever voice comes out.
You are forgiven right now, as you read this, and Psalm 103 says as far as the east is from the west so far has He removed our transgressions, and the Holy Spirit is the one who applies a completed act and not a set of six seconds. And expect the grip to arrive exactly on schedule, because if you wait for the body to cooperate before you speak you have handed the verdict to your forearms and given them a vote that was never issued to them.
You have a ruling that does not consult your hands, and it is written that He will not remember your sins, and the Spirit is what makes that a fact about a man in a truck. Eight hundred passes has not amended it by one word.
And do the ordinary things too. Mention it to a doctor, because fourteen years of a reliable physical reaction is worth somebody looking at. Say all of it out loud to one real person this week, in daylight, your wife or your brother or the pastor of twenty years, because a thing carried alone for fourteen years grows in the dark. If it has gone heavier than a grip on a wheel, if you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, today. That is not weak faith. That is a man calling for a tow, and God is not disappointed in you for it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these in the cab with the engine off. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says this authority came as a gift and not as a reward for a clean road. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not how much of it you feel, and out at ninety-one you will feel none of it. And whatever He does next, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why these get said with the knuckles up.
- Grip that arrives at mile ninety-one, you are a feeling and not a finding, in the name of Jesus. It is written that as far as the east is from the west so far has He removed my transgressions, and east and west have never once met at a mile marker.
- Argument that my hands outrank the court, get out of this truck. Scripture says He blots them out for His own sake and will not remember them, and forearms have never sat on a bench in any court that counts.
- Lord, You have been in the passenger seat for all eight hundred passes and You have never once agreed with my hands. It is written that You do not deal with us according to our sins, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit says removed and my grip says something else, and I am driving with You.
