The Same Verse Every Sunday

The fader for the piano needs a nudge on the second verse because the pianist always leans in there, and his hand goes to it without him, and so does the other thing.

He has run the sound desk at the back of this church for eleven years. It is a good place to be if you would rather not be looked at. You can see everybody's back and nobody sees yours, and there is always something to do with your hands. The congregation stands. The song is the one they sing most weeks, and he could mix it in his sleep, and every week at the second verse the pianist leans in and he nudges the fader and the guilt arrives, on time, the way it has since the year it happened.

He believes he is forgiven. He would say so if you asked, and he would mean it. He asked God for it eleven years ago in the parking lot of this building with the engine off and he has never doubted that God heard him. That is not the problem. The problem is that the feeling did not get the message. Eleven years of Sundays, and it still shows up at the second verse like a man with a season ticket, and somewhere around the seventh year he stopped fighting it and started listening to it, because a thing that lasts that long, he reasoned, must be telling you something. Maybe it was not really forgiven. Maybe there was a part he missed. Maybe the feeling is the truer witness, and the verdict was just words he wanted.

The verse ends. He eases the fader back. The teenager he is training looks over and he nods, all good, and it is all good, on the desk. Nobody knows. Eleven years and nobody knows.

You know the second verse. Whatever the moment is that yours arrives at, the same hymn or the same road or the same hour of the night, you know the season ticket it holds, and you know the quiet conclusion under it: I have been forgiven in principle, and I have felt guilty in fact, and the fact has outlasted the principle for so long that it must be the fact that is true.

The heart is not the court

Let me name the pit exactly, because it is more precise than guilt. It is the moment a persistent feeling gets promoted to evidence. You did not decide to promote it. It simply outlasted everything else, and a man who has felt a thing every Sunday for eleven years starts to trust it the way you trust a clock that has never been wrong, and the conclusion he draws is that his heart knows something about his standing that God's verdict does not. That is the pit. Not the feeling. The trust in the feeling.

John wrote about exactly this, to people whose hearts were doing exactly this.

For whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.1 John 3:20

Read the order of that. He does not say our heart never condemns us. He says whenever, which means he expected it to happen, and to happen again, to forgiven people. And then he does not tell them to argue with the heart or wait for it to change. He puts something over it. God is greater than our heart. And the reason is knowledge: He knows everything. Which means He knows the thing. He knows the eleven years. He knows the second verse. Your heart is condemning you on partial information and He is acquitting you on all of it.

You are forgiven now, on this Sunday, with the feeling still there. I am not speaking my own comfort over you. It is written that God is greater than the condemning heart, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that verse the ruling in you rather than a nice thing John said, and He does not wait for the second verse to feel different before it is true.

Feelings did not attend the hearing

Here is the sentence I want you to carry out of this, and I want to build it properly so it holds weight. The verdict was given, and your feelings were not present when it was. Romans 8:1 says there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Now. It does not say no condemnation once you feel it, or no condemnation for those who have stopped feeling guilty. It says now, and it says it about your standing, which is a legal thing, and your feelings, which are a weather thing, and it never once mixes the two up.

The feeling is real. I am not going to tell you it is imaginary or that a stronger man would not have it. It is a real feeling in a real body and eleven years is a long time to carry it. What it is not is a witness. It was not in the room when God ruled. It has no new information. Everything it knows, He knew first and completely, and He ruled anyway.

You have a verdict that did not consult your feelings, and it is not waiting on them now. That is what is written in Romans 8:1 and 1 John 3:20 read together, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps a verdict standing in a man whose heart keeps reopening the case.

I have to say two more things plainly, because this site is careful about them. First, I do not promise you the feeling will lift. It may. It may lift this year, or it may show up at the second verse for the rest of your life, and I would be lying if I said which. Second, and read this twice: a man who still feels it has not failed to receive it. The verdict does not need your feelings' signature to be valid. If it did, John would have written whenever our heart condemns us we are condemned, and he wrote the opposite.

And you were forgiven at the level of fact, not at the level of feeling. Scripture puts the pardon in the past and completed, in Christ, and it puts the feeling in the whenever, and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds both in you without letting the second one vote on the first.
