Tuesday nights she is at that church until half past nine and there is nothing in her life she would trade it for.
She prays for people. Really prays, the kind where you find out afterward that ninety minutes went by. She has stood with a woman whose son was in a cell and prayed until something in that woman's face changed and stayed changed. She has watched God do things in that room that she will tell you about with her whole hands. Eleven years of Tuesdays.
Then she gets in the car.
And somewhere between the parking lot and the third traffic light, the stone comes back and sits in her chest exactly where it has sat since she was twenty-three years old.
She is fifty-one now.
It is one thing. She settled it a long time ago, properly, on her knees, with a Bible open, and she has never once doubted the doctrine. She has preached the doctrine. She has taken that doctrine to other people on a Tuesday night and watched it break something off them in front of her.
And she drives home with the stone in.
Twenty-eight years is a long time. Somewhere in there, without ever saying a word about it, she came to a conclusion: that whatever God does for the woman with the son in a cell, He has not done that particular thing for her, because if He had, the stone would have gone.
Nobody knows. Not her husband. Not the two women she has prayed beside for a decade, who would drop everything. Not the pastor. Because how do you say it. She is the one who carries other people's weight. There is no version of that sentence that does not sound like the whole ministry has been a fraud, and it has not been a fraud, and she knows it has not.
Maybe you have a stone. Maybe you are the one people call and there is one thing in your own chest that never moves. You settled it. You believe you are forgiven. And something sits there anyway, and after enough years you stopped calling it a feeling and started reading it as a finding.
Sit down here at the back. Nothing here is going to tell you the stone is nothing.
A chest is not a courtroom
Let me say the distinction out loud, because everything else stands on it.
There is what is legally true about you and there is what your body carries. Two registers. They can disagree for twenty-eight years without either one moving the other one inch. The verdict came down in a court. The stone sits in a chest. A chest has never once been sworn in.
Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience.Hebrews 10:22
Look at what that verse assumes. It assumes there is such a thing as a conscience that accuses a person who has already been cleared, and it does not tell that person to wait until the accusing stops. It tells them to draw near now, with the conscience in the state it is in, and it calls the standing full assurance while the person is still carrying the other thing.
You are invited to come the whole way in with the stone still in you, and Hebrews 10 is where that invitation is written, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the sprinkling clean and not your chest that certifies it.
And notice what Scripture does not promise anywhere. It never says the conscience will go quiet on a schedule. It says the sins are removed. You have been holding God to a timetable He never wrote, and what He did write is about the record and not about what a body carries at a traffic light, and His Spirit is the one who keeps a woman reading the actual sentence.
Why the stone is so persuasive
Now the mechanism, because a woman who thinks for a living deserves an explanation rather than a hand on the shoulder.
Twenty-eight years of a thing being in the same place feels like a fact. It should not, and it does. A body keeps a shape long after the reason for the shape is dealt with, and the shape gets more convincing with every year it survives, because the mind reads persistence as proof.
And there is a second thing, and this one belongs to women in exactly her position. She has watched God move for other people constantly. Constantly. Every one of those Tuesdays is a piece of evidence about what God does, and every drive home is a piece of evidence about what God has not done for her, and after eleven years those two piles are enormous and they are sitting in the same house.
That is not a spiritual failure. It is the most natural conclusion available and it is wrong. The pile on the way home is a pile of feelings, and the pile on the Tuesdays is a pile of works of God, and only one of those two piles is evidence about anything.
You are not the exception in your own car, and Romans 2 says God shows no partiality, and it is His Spirit who moves in that room on a Tuesday and He is the same Spirit sitting in the passenger seat at the third light.
I am not going to promise the stone goes
Here is the honest part, and I am not going to do to you what somebody with good intentions probably did once.
I am not telling you the stone will lift by Christmas. I do not know that. Some people find it thins out within a season of getting the reading straight. Some carry it for decades and get it lighter, not gone. There is no timetable in Scripture and I will not invent one to give this article a better ending than the truth has.
What I will say is that the stone was never what made the pardon real, so it has never been in a position to unmake it. You were cleared by a finished work and not by a cleared chest, and Hebrews 10 says by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified, and the Spirit is what keeps that standing on a night when everything under your ribs disagrees.
And here is what you are allowed to do, and I do not think anybody has ever offered it to a woman in your position. You are allowed to say it out loud with the stone in. That is not pretending. Pretending would be telling those two women that you are fine. Saying the verdict while the weight sits there is the opposite of pretending: it is telling the truth about the court and the truth about the drive home in the same breath.
So here is what is happening tonight, in the car, somewhere before the third light.
You are going to say the verdict out loud with the stone in. Not after it lifts. Not once you feel like a woman who has received something. Right there at the light, out loud, in whatever voice comes.
You are forgiven right now, as you read this, and Hebrews 10 says draw near in full assurance of faith with your heart sprinkled clean, and the Holy Spirit is the one who applies a finished work and not a settled chest. And expect the stone to sit exactly where it always sits, because if you wait for your body to agree before you speak, you have handed the verdict to your ribs and given them a vote that was never issued.
You have a standing that does not consult your chest, and it is written that by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified, and the Spirit is what makes that a fact about a woman driving home from her own prayer meeting. Twenty-eight years has not amended it by one word.
And do the ordinary things too. Say all of it out loud to one real person this week, in daylight: the pastor, a counselor, one of those two women who would drop everything and who will not think it makes a fraud of anything. A thing carried alone for twenty-eight years grows in the alone. If it has gone heavier than a stone, if you have thought about ending your life, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number or crisis line, today. That is not weak faith in an intercessor. That is a woman doing for herself what she has done for four hundred other people, and God is not disappointed in you for needing hands on your own back.
Declare this over yourself
Say these in the car with your hand still on your chest. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and Scripture says this authority came as a gift and not as the yield of eleven years of Tuesdays. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not the volume, and you of all people know exactly what volume is worth. And whatever He does next, and when, is entirely His, in His own way and in His timing, which is exactly why these get said with the stone still in.
- Stone I have carried since I was twenty-three, you are a feeling and not a finding, in the name of Jesus. It is written to draw near in full assurance with a heart sprinkled clean, and that verse hands the invitation to a woman with a conscience still talking.
- Conclusion I reached at the third light, get out of this car. Scripture says God shows no partiality, and the God who broke something off that woman on a Tuesday is not running a different policy on the drive home.
- Lord, You have been in this passenger seat every Tuesday for eleven years and You have never once agreed with my chest. It is written that by one offering You have perfected for all time those who are being sanctified, and I thank You, because Your Holy Spirit says perfected and my ribs say something else, and I am going with You.
